Some of us here must remember him...

It has been reported that he has passed away and sadly had been suffering with Alzheimer's for a number of years but had up to the early part of this century still been working in local radio.

Sadly I only ever seem to hear about great broadcasters when some sad news has happened...

I remember Keith Fordyce primarily as the presenter of the weekly "Treasure Hunt"* quiz show which was produced and broadcast by Westward Television at its Plymouth studios in the 1960s and early 1970s. Keith used to travel to Plymouth to present this show - which was broadcast live - at the same period as he was presenting "Ready Steady Go!" for Associated Rediffusion in London.

He had a penchant for chatting up the old ladies in the studio audience on treasure Hunt and is fondly remembered by many people in the West Country for having presented the show.

Sadly, neither Westward TV nor the Derry's Cross studios (which I spent many happy hours in) survive today.

NB* - Not to be confused with the Channel 4 show of the same name which came along a lot later.

Keith also had quite a long spell presenting SOTS I think when it first started before Brian Matthew took over around 1990

A fine broadcaster

Yes Keith was the first presenter back in 1983. His other Radio 2 shows included Late Night Extra, Town & Country Quiz and Beat the Record.

Between Fordyce and Matthews, there was a time when SOTS was presented by a succession of 60s performers...Steve Marriott and Gary Brooker are two that spring to mind, but there were a lot more. And Simon Dee was in the chair for a fairly long stint too.

More recently, Joe Brown did a few SOTS whilst Brian Matthew was on sick leave, also, I believe, did Sandie Shaw, though I'll stand corrected if anyone does know better re the latter named.

Sad news. I can remember him (just about) from Ready Steady Go and I must have heard a few of his editions of SOTS.

Just possibly SOTS is one of few programmes which would work with pop stars from the 60's performers presenting it of/when Brian no longer does so(or another 60's DJ)There's still a few around...

Sad news indeed. My earliest 'pop' memories were watching Keith and the lovely Cathy McGowan presenting Ready Steady Go back in 1964.

Simon Dee presented between late 1987 and early 1989. Others included Del Shannon, Neil Sedaka, Long John Baldry, Duane Eddy, Bobby Vinton, Tom Jones, Peter Noone, Brian Hyland, Max Bygraves, Ken Dodd and Donovan. You can hear a 1985 edition presented by Jet Harris via this blog

Might've been interesting...

There's been talk that Smooth are doing a programme similar to Pick Of The Pops on Sundays between 6pm-8pm(I think)where they look at two Top 20's and its to hosted by David Jensen, maybe it's just me missing it or it hasn't started yet.

Obviously it clashes with Paul O'Grady and Alan Titchmarsh. I wonder if they will cut out songs or play only so much of a song.

I look forward to it

It will be nice to have something decent to listen to on a Sunday evening
although I concede Alan Titchmarsh is a good broadcaster but just not really my bag

As eveyone knows I've been advocating POTP being moved to Sunday early evenings for months and this only really confirms what I already thought i.e. that the programme planners at Smooth have a lot more idea than those on Radio 2

However it will be nice to have similar shows on Saturday and Sunday on each network

I just hope that they pick different years each weekend
