Quote:
Former Radio 1 presenter Dave Pearce is to present Radio 2's Dance Music show which starts next month for a 13-week run on Thursday nights.

The DJ will play tracks from his vast record collection which have helped define UK club culture over the last 40 years, in the 11pm to midnight slot.

Each programme spotlights a defining era, journeying through the evolution of dance – from disco to jazz funk and from the electronic eighties to the advent of house music, Ibiza and beyond.

Celebrating DJ legends and searching for the ultimate 12" single, Dave will also invite listeners to reveal their adventures in clubland over the years.

Dave said: "I'm delighted to be able to share my passion for dance music with listeners to Radio 2. With nearly all the original heavyweight DJs over 50 now I guess dance music has finally come of age! It's time to bring back some of those great records that we all miss.

"I've been working in dance since playing disco on land-based pirate radio in the late Seventies and have continued going to clubs, DJ-ing and enjoying the music ever since. I'm really looking forward to hearing listener's anecdotes and record suggestions. People often say to me whatever happened to all those great records, the good news is that they are under my bed and in my loft!"

The new show starts from Thursday 14 April. Dave meanwhile will present his last Dance Anthems show on 6 Music this coming weekend (2 April). The show moved over from Radio 1 in autumn 2008. On his website, Dave told listeners: "It was a great challenge to go and play something different on a radio station that is known for more or less playing the same indie music 24/7 but I was delighted we built a strong and loyal listenership and increased the audience in the Saturday slot by a third in the first quarter alone."

That's all we need

We already have wall to wall dance music on Radio One and virtually all commercial stations on Friday and Saturday nights and now we're to be stuck with it on Radio 2 on Thursdays

The only half decent music I have heard from that genre is stuff by the Freemasons and back in the early 90s by Oceanic

That reminds me of one Sunday back in 1993 when at the time myself and a former business partner used to run an independent record label based in his studio in Wrexham and on that day Oceanic were recording at the studio

I went there around lunchtime and there was an almighty bust up between the girl singer of Oceanic and the rest of the band

Me and my former wife ended up taking her out for lunch in an effort to calm things down but without much sucess as she ended up recording her vocals seperately from the rest of the band

About a month later the track 'Insanity' was a massive hit not just in Britain but all over Europe and at the time I wondered if people buying the record had any idea of the aggrevation involved in making it

I know the singer had a very unusual name but I can't for the life of me remember it but I do recall she was based in Liverrpool at the time

Happy Days Smile

I think her name was Jorinde Williams. I used to be a DJ and I remember 'Insanity' coming out on a promo from All Around The World Records. Pete Tong was one of the first to play it, the Dream Tripper mix was the one that made it big.

It's funny, but a month or two before the old BBC forums were shut down I suggested a dance music show, where they go through the club scene and the history of dance music, plus of course playing classic tunes. I suggested Danny Rampling and even a title for the show plus a load of detail.

Maybe I should employ an intellectual property lawyer and sue them for theft of thought and idea.

Or I could have a digestive biscuit instead, you know, for dunking pleasure.

I don't think a show at 11pm on a Thursday does much harm and to be fair, Dave Pearce is okay and won't be playing the chart dance rubbish. I remember Dave Pearce from way back when he was on Radio London. He had a show on Monday nights which was hip hop, called 'A Fresh Start To The Week', and on a Thursday he had a 3 hour dance show called 'The Funk Fantasy'. Great times.

Oh thanks for that Uncle - of course you're right about the name - I would have been lying awake all night trying to remember it otherwise

As you'll gather I'm not a great dance music fan but I have to admit that 'Insanity' was and still is a superb dance track

No he's not, but this is only a 13-week series so that can't be the reason for him leaving 6 Music. I wonder if this will be a regular series or just a 1-off.

More crap for Radio 2 (I mean Radio 1.5). Thank goodness I don't listen any more ...........

Shennan really has succeeded in alienating a great many listeners - and no, I'm not just 'getting old' either, he's dumbed it down, plain and simple.

Indeed. It's very much becoming the dumping ground for DJs getting too old for Radio 1 but the BBC are too embarrassed to give the complete push to.

There is obviously nothing Shennan will stop at to bring radio 2 to its knees Rolling Eyes FGS, what next - On second thoughts, best not to ask, he's probably already commissioned it!

Apart from the ever - excellent KB, I don't listen at all to R2 during the week, not at all on Saturdays and a few shows from 3pm on Sundays. That's it. How times have changed , and not for the better Crying or Very sad

It's getting to the stage I too only listen to KB on daytime R2 apart from Simon Mayo usually only the second hour though. JV's parenting week a no-go area for me.

I agree. The word "clueless" comes to mind.

Unless of course the main aim is to utterly decimate the station, in which case he's perfect for the job. Smile

It's a shame that Dave Pierce is to present this show as it sounds like it could be ok.
That sort of era of lets say House music is now 20 years old why is it a style of music that is taboo from R2? ALL other periods except maybe punk or rap are covered on R2. Disco and Acid Jazz has it's highlights too.

Music snobbery is a terrible thing.

As I say DP is a bit of a prat but the content sounds ok although I guess I'll never catch it.

Dance music on records reached it's centenary this year! Yes 2nd February 1911 the very first British dance record was Dreaming a waltz tune by a band conducted by Eli Hudson, issued on the Zonophone label.

As usual Radio 2 re-writes history and no doubt we'll be told dance music started with You Make Me Feel Unreal by Sylvester in 1978 Razz (great record)

I'm trying to work out if you're being ironic here - the record was You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real). Were you trying to say Radio 2 would get the title wrong as well as pretending that Let's Twist Again and Monster Mash never happened?

I think if John is refering to the current state of R2 then the song title must surely be:
"You Make Me Feel (Unwell)" Wink

Oh, got the title wrong, I always thought it was Unreal at the time it was released, just when me an' the missus were dating Smile
