Thought I'd give this a heads up as it could be good. The first few years I probably won't remember much, so it'll be a bit of a recent history lesson for me.

10 o'clock Thursday nights for the next 50 weeks.

Eh?

Quote:
Sounds of the Twentieth Century is an audio journey through five decades of triumph, tragedy and trivia in 50 hour-long episodes.

Doesn't a century have 10 decades? And the photo suggests that 20th century started with Elvis.

Sounds interesting Helen, thanks for flagging it up. I probably won't have much interest in the music from about the mid-1970s but the other stuff should be good to hear.

Ooh, now this sounds like a brilliant series of programmes. I feel ridiculously spoiled with listen again material now that Radcliffe and Maconie are on 15 hours a week. I'm meant to be working harder than ever at the moment... oh well...

A treat of a listen leading Chris Maume of The Independent to say "Is commissioning Sounds of the 20th Century the first thing the 6 Music/Radio 2 controller Bob Shennan has got right in his short but deeply unsatisfactory tenure?"

and Liz Barclay to have it as one of her picks in Pick of the Week on Radio 4

Those BBC voices......you can almost see the forelocks being tugged whenever the royal family are mentioned in news items... Laughing

Not a bad start and i hope to catch the remainder but I noticed some of the news headlines were read by an uncredited voice that might've been Bill Bingham(?)and obviously recorded now...rather than genuine recordings of voices at the time.

Could be a lack of some archive material being available and as the series comes nearer to the present day more genuine material may be available.

They reached 1959 with last week's show, 1960 this Thursday night.

I'm starting to recall some of the things mentioned and the songs, so thought it worth a 'shout out' as it's sort of reaching the era that some of us at least can remember!

Do you know whether this is available on Listen Again Helen? I followed your original link and it said it wasn't, but that might be because it's out of time.

It should be Minx, I only listened to last Thursday's yesterday.

I usually go to the 'schedule' page for listen again shows these days since they removed the A-Z listing at the top of the 'shows' page.

I'm listening to last week's episode now. I find it under documentaries on the Radio 2 homepage. My o/h remembers a lot of the things mentioned, I don't yet, but expect to over the coming weeks! We both really enjoy listening though.

One for Breakfast Show fans this week - the arrival of Chris Evans... on Radio 1! Lots of good memories.

It was a good episode this week. Chris sounded the same but different. I'd not realised it at the time but looking back it was quite an important day in my life and perhaps is one of the reasons I like him so much now but didn't really then. Funny old thing, life.

Well Rach - leaving aside the merits or otherwise of CE I can understand what you're saying

I think there are certain things in all of our lives, whether when looked at objectively they are good or bad, which we associate with good times or bad times and that's never more true than in the case of music

Generally speaking most people love tracks which were around at the time they met their first love or got married or had their first child and equally they hate tracks which they associate with bad things like the death of a parent or the end of a special relationship - the actual music can be good or bad - it doesn't really matter

For me I only have to hear the track 'Live to Tell' by Madonna to make me feel really good and it's not a particularly brilliant track in itself - it just reminds me of some very good times in my life

On the other hand if I hear 'The One and Only' by Chesney Hawkes or even worse 'Wiggle It' by Two in a Room it makes me want to smash the radio up

Tony Blackburn played the latter track on POTP a couple of weeks ago and whilst luckily it doesn't get played a lot I just had to get out of the house Shocked

It's the last one this evening. I wonder if there will be a CD released?

Interesting to note that the BBC very belatedly seems to have realised what some of us were saying more than a decade ago - namely that the 20th Century ended on 31st December 2000 and NOT 31st December 1999

So what on earth was all that c--p about peddled by the Blair Government aided and abetted by the corrupt media which tried to sell to idiotic members of our society the ridiculous concept that 31st December 1999 was the eve of the new millenium

Anyone with even half a brain knows that people start counting at one and not zero - the Iraq war certainly wasn't the only issue the British people were lied to about Evil or Very Mad

The end of a great series. This is one that I'd be happy to see repeated!

I think it is a really well conceived series and heard most episodes first time around. So much is packed in and the absence of links makes me listen even more carefully.

I was 9 in 1951 so a lot of the first programme resonated with me. The radio was always on in our house so I absorbed a lot of news and different styles of music.

I listened to the first few episodes of this series last time Eileen. I was born in 1951 and like you I must have absorbed a lot from the radio as it was always on at home.
