I know she had a bit of negative press on these boards in the run-up to her first show, but I've had a listen and I have to say it was a good first show. Could this be because she is not a comedienne (or other TV personality) playing at being a DJ but is an experienced DJ with some musical knowledge, including covering events such as the Glastonbury festival. I say that as someone who also listened to the previous Radcliffe & Maconie show. Shame she doesn't get the two hours that Radcliffe & Maconie had. Did anyone else enjoy her show?

Yes, I enjoyed it (also as someone else who listened/still does listen to Radcliffe & Maconie). Having never listened to her Radio 1 shows, I wasn't sure what to expect.

The show was brilliant. Shame it wasn't 2 hours instead of the 90 minutes. I think the old Evening Session ran for about 90 minutes over at R1 when Jo presented it.

I rarely listen to radio at that time as I'm usually watching TV, either live or catch up, then. May give it a try when there's nothing to watch.

I watched the University Challenge final (Ian Hislop will be proud) and then the stormy, steamy saga that was Lambing Live, so I missed it.

I was doing the same Ron. Shame York didn't win, but I liked both teams that made the final!

I think she's dreadful, and her voice gets on my nerves. Somehow she reminds me of a slightly calmer Zoe Ball with a little music knowledge thrown into the mix.

She's certainly no replacement for Radcliffe & Maconie (who were excellent on their new 6Music show).

The mixtape is good, but maybe listeners choice need to go a little way from the usual stuff which is played on 2 like, Spandau Ballet - True.. Although it's a lovely track!! Some how listeners choices are probarly varied, but it's the producers call what is played?..

Maybe the same accent? I think Jo and Zoe both have very sexy voices. Not as sexy as Leona Graham Absoulte Radio...

I think that's very unlikely Mark considering that Zoe Ball was brought up in Blackpool and Jo Whiley certainly was not - I think she might be from Lincolnshire but I could be wrong

Both have voices which are totally boring and not remotely sexy if, like me, you're a hot blooded male Shocked

Jo is from Northampton.

Zoe Ball's voice sexy? Shocked
As sexy as earache, and that's what you'll get.

Oh dear. I must admit to having a fondness for Zoe Ball's voice (maybe because we're both from Blackpool) - it's what she says that does my head in!

I listened to the last half an hour and I could do without Dr Who, and drawn out questioning, and so much email / text reading Rolling Eyes

I listened to it for the first and last time last night, I just got the overwhelming feeling that I was listening to Radio 1, boring bland and predictable and aimed at an age demographic below what Radio 2 should be catering for.

Am I surprised? No - The slide continues. RIP Radio 2.

I gave it a chance and hated it.

She asked people to text in what they were doing. I replied with:

"I'm sat here wondering who on earth R&M p**sed off to get shunted to 6 Music while you launch a poor imitation of their show."

If there's anyone else like me then R2 is going to suffer. I put the DAB radio on early for the R&M afternoon show and enjoyed Lauren Laverne's and Steve Lurpack's after it. So now I'll probably not bother at all with R2, particularly as the playlist is being repeated so much.

The only reason I can see that R&M were shifted to 6Music, is the push to get people over to DAB, the BBC doing the governments work.

Otherwise the more logical, move if the BBC had to retain the services of Whiley, would have been to shift her to 6Music.

If this trend were to continue we can look forward to the services of Moyles, Cotton, Mills and Bowman gracing the hallowed halls of R2, where the likes of Ray Moore, John Dunn, Ed Stewart and Benny Green once walked......

Jo was getting to the stage that her age demographic isn't what R1 are looking for. Also isn't fitting into the type of shows she wants. Radio 1 seems to be the one of the slippery slide, which I think the BBC should really consider selling off? Radio 2 is the station which can offer all types of shows, and Jo show does remind me of the old Evening Sessions. Yes Radio 2 does seem to driving towards the old style Radio 1, but the listener figures doesn't reflect it's on a slippery slope..

Why is it all about bloody listening figures? As we subsidise the BBC and hence R2, it shouldn't be trying to compete on a commercial basis, to quote the old analogy, the Sun is the best selling paper, but is it quality?

If its about listening figures all we can look forward to are more of the likes of Norton, Feltz, Carr, why not Katie Price as well, or a radio version of the X Factor?

Just because Jo Whiley didn't fit into R1's demographic, that doesn't mean that she should have automatically have qualified for a place on Radio 2, there was no position, instead one was found to the detriment of R&M.

It didn't seem to matter back in Bannisters day a few worthy professional presenters/DJ (call them what you will) were lost to the BBC and were ideal candidates for posts on Radio 2.

You're at it again, Mark. It's the second post today where you've used the words "age demographic". It's either "age" or "demographic"!

By the way, what about Annie Nightingale? Would John Peel still be presenting Radio One shows if he were still alive? I think he would. Perhaps it's simply the case that Jo Whiley's shows weren't achieving high enough audience figures any more?

Quite right. The problem is that the BBC - as with many larger corporate bodies in the UK - is run by idiots who like to be referred to as "managers" (but who couldn't manage a proverbial drinking session in a brewery) and who appear to spend most of their time schmoozing with potential employers at other networks, trying to impress their peers or simply watching their own backs. Many of them clearly have no passion for - or real-world experience of - broadcasting and don't really give a toss for the viewers and/or listeners. Just look at the way The Insufferable Evans is foist upon us at every turn.

I was listening to a bit of drivetime yesterday and had to laugh when SM read out a email/text and said about someone having come to the R1 network, and had to correct himself to R2, even he can't tell the difference these days Laughing

I've decided if they put anyone of R2 for a show they'd get the same listener numbers, just different people listening, eg Breakfast approx 7m, so it's no measure of quality Rolling Eyes

Forget the remit let's just dumb it down, that's the policy. Rolling Eyes

Radio 1 is gradually changing the way it sounds. Radio 2 is also doing the same thing. Radio 2 need to give something different to for the listeners, and 6 Music is trying to do the same on it's Digital platform.

Radio 1 in my book is dead wood now. The stations DJ's will eventually sound like Pete Tongs...

So by that by that standard and the way things are going, Radio 2 will have a daytime schedule of Pete Tongs in 5 to 10 years time?

Actually Radio 2 has already gone Pete Tong Wink

Had Jo Whiley on last night while driving around - what a snoozefest. I was vocal against her coming to Radio 2 but have given her a go and found her lacking. Her and her show is just incredibly dull and lifeless. Can't believe they got rid of Radcliffe & Maconie for this.

Agree with what you say, personally R&M were the right show at the right time (even if only for 3 days a week). I fear I will miss them more on the darker evenings when there is less to do outside.

The music Whiley is playing is primarily 90's / 00's, I still can't help but think that this does not fit in with the R2 remit, maybe I'm getting old, but judging from the text's etc that she reads out, seem to be from young whipper-snappers!

I'm not convinced that 6Music's coat is still not hanging on a rusty peg, as the subject was touched on in Paxmans interview with Lord Patten last night, it may be the sacrificial lamb to prove that the Trust headed up by Patten does have teeth....

Maybe we will yet see R&M back on R2?

I listened for the first time on Tuesday this week in order to escape the Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona

I thought the show was quite alright but there seemed to be more of the current Radio One type music creeping in than was the case with R&M but some of it was actually quite good.

Having said that there was also a 70's Bowie track and a mid 90's Manics track to mention just a couple of examples so not all the output is new stuff

I quite like Jo Whiley but I think it was wrong to use her as a replacement for R&M and I would have much preferred her to be given the Saturday morning or afternoon show or a slot on Sunday when the current Radio 2 output is pretty awful

Why not listen to them of an evening via iPlayer, or download the show and listen to it on an iPod (other media players are available ....... ) etc.

There's plenty of choices for the discerning R&M fan, and now they're on for 15 hours a week there's no excuse to miss their shows. Smile

I pretty much only listen to R&M now - I iPod them from listen again and then walk to and from work listening to them... I rarely hear any Radio 2 now. Bob Shennan's sort of shot himself in the foot as far as I'm concerned and I'm still getting what I want.

You could use something like Audacity to 'record' it from iPlayer then listen at your leisure. It only does it in real time though so a bit time consuming. Don't suppose you have Sky + ? You can record it on there using the manual settings.

I listen to the shows via iPlayer, but I know that there's all sorts of ways to download iPlayer's audio streams. A Google search for iplayer radio downloader should turn up some good tools for the job. Smile

Don't know if anyone has caught this today http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1386546/Jo-Whiley-I-actually-ASKED-leave-Radio-1.html but it looks like she requested a move to R2.

It would have been nice back in 1993 if some of the older R1 DJ's had been given that opportunity.

It's a shame that R&M where sidelined because of her request, it confirms to me that BS is hell bent on lowering the age demographic of R2 as as some of the comments point out.

Its also apparent that R1's listeners are also losing faith with their station.
