Who did the interlude on Aled's FNIMN just now? We tuned in late, (watching F1 practice Rolling Eyes ) but it sounded like Fran Godfrey. Or was it Claire Teale?

The programme this coming Friday is a repeat of the terrific one devoted to Frank Loesser. It is really worth hearing and I shall be taping it. All the performances are faultless.

Eeee Eileen. Confused Taping it? Why not download it to your 'puter then connect your 'puter to your hi-fi and listen to digitally perfect sound without the hiss and hum of the tape?

Depends on how good the tape machine is and the connections are from the receiver, of course!

Er ... The computer is upstairs & the hi-fi is downstairs. We've had a Technics cassette deck for years which gives very good reproduction. Anyway (defiantly) I LIKE tapes.

Thanks Eileen.

Just checked my own playlists from my dance band programmes, over the last two years I've featured British bands playing/singing 6 songs by Frank Loesser which he wrote with various people like Hoagy Carmichael, Louis Alter, Jule Styne, Burton Lane etc.

Two Sleepy People, Heart And Soul, Dolores, Says My Heart, I Wish I Were Twins, I Don't Want To Walk Without You.

All very fine songs and I expect to hear a few of them on FNIMN.

Didn't get to hear all of the programme,Eileen, (but heard it the first time round) just the overture at the beginning which reminded us of some of the songs Loesser composed.

Tonight on Channel 4 they're showing the film Big and one of the scenes from it has Tom Hanks jumping onto a giant piano in a toy shop and playing Heart and Soul with his feet!

I've always loved that song my favourite version being by Jan and Dean

Thanks for the YouTube links Becky, very enjoyable. I've never seen Big but tonight is difficult enough as it is - ITV Downton Abbey, BBC4 industrial history progs, Radio 2 Russell Davies, Clare Teal & David Jacobs - all together and/or overlapping.
Oh dear, the stress of having to make choices. Sad
Thank goodness for iPlayer! Smile

Tonight's FNIMN is a tribute to Matt Munro who would, if he had lived, have been 80 this year.and is also the 50th anniversary of the release of Portrait Of My Love.

Laughing at Colin too!

There is also a Prom on BBC4, a repeat of the Rogers and Hammerstein one with the John Wilson orchestra. I only watched my recording of it last week and really enjoyed it.

I like a lot of Matt Munro's songs so will probably listen again to that during the week.

Back from the pub. The Adnams ("Brewery of the Year 2010" and rightly so) beer was fab and Al Stewart is performing "Year of the Cat" on a 1976 OGWT on BBC4.

How good is that?

I loved FNIMN last night. It was all music by John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago etc) and was hosted by Joel Grey, who was the original Cabaret MC on stage and in the film version. (He is also the father of Jennifer Grey who played Baby in the film Dirty Dancing, as I found out when I Googled him).

It was great to hear the familiar songs and also so many which I didn't know. They were a witty and highly musical partnership.

Thank you for that Eileen. I'll try to listen back or record it for when there's nothing I fancy listening to.

FNIMN was outstanding last night. Ken Bruce was the MC. There were only four vocal numbers by Pamela Hay (must admit to not being a fan of operatic sopranos), so it was almost all orchestral. Julian Lloyd Webber was superb as always.

The BBC Concert Orchestra was augmented by Southbank Sinfonia which is an orchestra specially formed some years ago to give young newly-qualified musicians a chance to play many different styles of orchestral music, to accompany established artists and to gain experience of live broadcasting.

It was all wonderful and is well worth a listen.

I managed to miss the Bryn Terfel one .... Twisted Evil

All the music last night's edition of FNIMN wasn't to my taste so I skipped through a lot of it on the iPlayer but I'm glad I listened to the programme or I would have missed hearing this glorious piece of music.....

I'm not a great lover of classical music but I'm happy to admit that that is a piece I do like hearing.

I do hear FNIMN often but when I hear or read that it is a repeat it allows me to look for something new on another BBC network so when I saw that the Radio Times said last nght it was a repeat of classical and light music I thought as I have heard it(may have a recording in my collection)I'd give it a miss.

I now discover it was a live concert from St. Luke's starring Michael Feinstein singing songs from the "Great American Songbook" so I missed it.

Listening on line doesn't work for me thanks to changes made to I player so I am quite angry that I cannot hear it!

I just hope in this era of budget cuts and repeats this one gets repeated sometime in the future and I manage to catch it.

I am amazed that I managed to miss any trailers for it.

If the new "Radioplayer" interface launched last week is what's causing the problems, you can try http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00zztbt/Friday_Night_is_Music_Night_08_04_2011/ instead of accessing it through the Friday Night Is Music Night homepage.

The only problem seems to be that there is no sound on 'listen again' I-player. The I-player seems to be working only on the live stream. Same for both Radio 2 & 6 music.

Helen,
The big reason I think I can answer myself...I am still on dial up but for the amount of time I listened online I managed ok but since Iplayer changed and the BBC dropped the embedded software which was run by Realplayer I think that could be the problem.

I can listen but you'll get perhaps 15 seconds of sound then perhaps 30 seconds of silence and so it goes on...

It didn't used to be a problem...

People keep trying to push me towards Broadband and I will have to sign up one day but if/when I do...who to sign up with is another matter...

I'll look into that Fred...

For me, it seems to be only the radio I-player where I cannot 'listen again' to previously broadcast shows. I've tried using three different browsers. The live streaming radio player is unaffected, as is the TV version of I-player where I can 'watch again' previously broadcast shows. Does anyone know if this is purely a BBC website problem?

GG, I didn't listen to FNIMN as it was advertised as a repeat. I'd love to have heard Michael Feinstein.

I too am having trouble with Listen Again which is so frustrating. I can't get to LA to any of the BBC Radio stations unless a Podcast is on offer and I also can't listen live. I'm on a Mac with broadband and must get to the bottom of it. Mad

Problem solved! I have always used Safari but when I accessed iPlayer via Firefox, “Listen Again” worked. Smile What a relief!

I hope all you others who are having problems get sorted soon.

I listened to much of the show, and I'm very disappointed with Feinstein. I've heard/seen him before on TV and still not keen on his voice /style.

The problem for me is that Feinstein's voice makes every song sound the same. He sang a dozen or so of the great 30s/40s songs but for me he made them damp squibs as his voice and 'emotion' was the same throughout.

The audience didn't seem all that impressed either as they failed to respond to Feinstein's occasional 'jokes', and questions to them, quite embarrassing really.

I'm not alone then...it shows its not necessarily corrected if you have broadband...I live near a telephone exchange so things should be even better because of that.

GG I've no idea how much you pay for your Dial Up but I'd be most surprised if you'd pay very much more for Broadband. If you're near (you don't say how near though) an exchange you will get much better speeds and if you go for one of the big companies you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

We had a friend who felt the same as you but took the plunge and wished she had done it years ago. You only hear the really bad stories when things go wrong but for millions of people things are fine. You can always keep you dial up connection (I still have it on our main computer) for the odd occasion that I've had a problem and 'needed' to send an email or something.

You could always try a wireless dongle, as well there are loads of packages.

H

PS sorry this is a bit off topic!

Thanks Helen...It's not exactly OT as I happened to mention that going online was not an option for listening.

If I was mobile I would think I am approx 10 minutes walking distance from the exchange and its all been upgraded for any ISP you can think of...
