RadioToday is reporting that Ryan Tubridy (presenter of the mid-morning show on Irish public service broadcaster, RTÉ's 2FM) is being lined up to sit in for Graham Norton while he's on holiday later this Summer; possibly starting on R2 in July this year.

http://radiotoday.co.uk/news.php?extend.6929.12
http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/beeb-recruits-tubridy-151457.html

I've never heard his shows, so can't comment on whether I like him or not, but I guess getting in a radio presenter from Ireland is better than getting a well-known British celebrity to do it!

It would be even better if they actually used an experienced British broadcaster bearing in mind they are not exactly in short supply

What is wrong with bringing in Johnnie Walker, Alex Lester, Richard Allinson, Janice Long, Tim Smith or one of the many decent presenters from 6 Music or even give a chance to someone from BBC Local Radio

Why on earth would anyone want to bring in yet another Irish blaney merchant when there's a host of home grown British talent which never gets a chance Sad

In some ways I agree but none of those that you have mentioned really do the 'chat' that is the Saturday 10-1 slot.

Another reason of course is that they all are on other programmes, so standins would have to be found for them which sort of defeats the object.

I don't know this Irish guy though.

They all do other shows but it wouldn't be too demanding for any of them to cover a three hour Saturday morning slot for a limited period of time

The present problem with Saturday mornings on Radio 2 is that there is far too much talk most of it totally irrelevant to the music being played and I can't see it being any different with this new stand in

I'm just glad I've got Lynn Parsons to listen to on weekend mornings

Saturday mornings have always had chat based shows though Ruddles. Anne Robinson back in the late 80s, and Michael Aspel too. Judy Speiers was on but not sure if she did afternoons.

I can't remember who was on before Jonathan Ross??? Anyone help me?

I remember reading he was tipped to cover that slot before Graham took over. If I was Richard Allinson I would be looking around for something else now, as he seems to not be getting a look in anymore.. Smooth Radio should be knocking on his door..

Is there something written in tablets of stone that we have to have a 'chat based show' on a Saturday morning -I don't think so and it's about time we had a change

After all Radio 2 is supposed to be a music based station and as far as I can see both Saturday and Sunday mornings need a good shake up so that music is put first rather than inane waffle unconnected with music which is what we get now Mad

I doubt that it is written in stone, but it's a formula that obviously works. If something isn't broke why fix it with something else?

Well it certainly doesn't work for me Helen

If I were Controller of the station I would give the three hours on Saturday morning to Johnnie Walker and the 11am slot on Sundays to Stuart Maconie - two presenters who put music first with the talk being complimentary to the music

If people want endless waffle they can listen to a host of other stations like 5 Live and Talksport to name just two

It doesn't work for me either. I would much prefer to listen to Johnnie Walker and/or Stuart Maconie in the weekend slots too.

Or alternatively if YOU don't want so called endless waffle you have the option to change to another station. But, hey, why let that get in the way of a good whinge which seems to be your speciality.....

Back to Ryan Tubridy, he was apparantly offered this slot around a year ago but Gerry Ryan's sudden death meant that he was given the morning show on RTE 2FM. As well as his radio show he is currently in the middle of his second season as presenter of the long running Late Late Show which holds the title of world's longest-running chat show.

Oh don't worry Shaky I wouldn't lower my standards to resort to listening to the c--p served up by Radio 2 in the Saturday and Sunday mid morning slots

As I said earlier Lynn Parsons on Smooth is a much preferable alternative

Oh and by the way I seem to remember you saying a while ago that you didn't intend to post on here any more

I don't care whether you do or don't but I find it undermines ones credibility to make a statement like that and end up going back on it and I think the same point was mentioned by Colin a while ago

When I do listen I usually enjoy the guests, it's not something I sit and listen to right through as I'm usually doing bits and pieces. It's only if we have a long car journey that I tend to listen to a couple of hours at least.

If I want music only I listen to a CD.

I pop in from time to time just to see if things have changed for the better - I used to visit every day but the same old whingers put me off doing that. My main reason for looking in tonight was that I had read about Ryan Tubridy on another forum and was interested to see what the reaction would be like here.

What never ceases to amaze me is that if you can't stand Radio 2, and it's clear that Colin and yourself fall into that category, why you don't just ignore it and find something that is to your taste. I can't stand reality TV shows for example but I don't sign up to X Factor / Big Brother / I'm A Celebrity forums and whinge about the shows, I find other things that I do like.

There are many things I like on Radio 2 but that fact should not prevent me from criticising things which I am not happy with

I listen regularly to Ken Bruce, Simon Mayo, SOTS, POTP, Johnnie Walker and Jeremy Vine just to name a few so it's certainly wrong to describe me as someone who is not a Radio 2 listener

As far as I know Colin has pretty much given up on mainstream Radio 2 but even that should not mean that he cannot validly express a view on this or any other forum

As I may have said before I can quite happily respect the views of people who may disagree with me but what I cannot respect is a situation where people somehow think that this forum should be a cozy mutual admiration society where to express any element of criticism about anything is perceived as negative and unreasonable

Nothing wrong with complaining - but you go on and on about things. The Chris Evans thing for instance - we get that you don't like him but you have to repeat it every time his name comes up no matter what the discussion....

Excuse me I haven't mentioned Chris Evans in any post for at least a month and probably longer

He is just one aspect of the overall rapid deterioration of Radio 2 which has accelerated even further since Bob Shennan took control

The problem is much bigger than just Chris Evans - it is the general dumbing down of the station's output to pander to listeners who have little interest or knowledge about music and to chase audience figures rather than doing what the BBC should be doing, namely providing a quality music channel staffed by presenters with knowledge of the subject

Radio 2 is now targeted at the X Factor, Big Brother type audiences which is exactly why I complain about it and if you don't like those programmes you should be complaining about it too

I agree with one of the previous posters on this thread-why can't the Saturday morning be more music based-the current format of inane chat from celebreties is not good radio entertainment in my opinion.

Thankfully there are better alternatives to tune into on Saturday mornings-the offerings by Smooth, Magic even Heart are better imo.

Well I can't see a problem with the formula.

Only heard the last hour yesterday but enjoyed the interview with Celia Imrie. Great actress and some interesting stories to tell.

There is more to life than music, music, music you know!

I certainly can Helen. 'Twas none other than Essex Boy himself, Steve Wright. To be fair to him (God, how I hate the idea of being fair to Steve Wright) he wasn't bad in the slot. He's competent enough to do one three hour show a week.

There seems to have been a problem with this forum this weekend, I've had to delete posts that have appeared twice when posting. I see Mark O has had the same problem too.

The Saturdays have a superb front 2 (Frankie, I believe she's called Wink )- unfortunately their opponents in this case, Girls Aloud, just don't have the defence to cope at this level- certainly not since Nadine "Dodgy Knees" Coyle's breakdown in training the day before the match. Doctors have since reassured her that her broken nail will be fine.
