I'm just back from a 9 mile walk from Northwood to Rickmansworth via Ruislip Woods and the Grand Union Canal towpath.

It was a bit muddy in the woods, we had a nice view of the aquadrome and the canal section was very pretty. It was a little chilly if we stopped for too long but walking in the lovely sunshine soon warmed us up.

All in all a good day in pleasant company (about 19 of us).

Sounds like I picked the wrong weekend to visit my mum down in Eastcote. I was down there last weekend when it rained most of the time - usually we have a walk around Ruislip Lido or the aquadrome and canal. I should have picked this weekend.

Not beautiful today which is dull and damp Sad

but yesterday (Sat 12th) which was a real breath of spring .

I went with about 30 others on a 12 mile walk in the Chilterns starting and ending at Rickmansworth and walking through some glorious open countryside around Chorleywood, Sarratt etc.

We sat in a field in Sarratt for our lunch and the sun was almost hot. Smile

Was a nice day in my neck of the woods yesterday too. Likewise, not nearly as good today, but at least the rain has stopped. Might pay a second visit this afternoon to a local pub that has been holding a mini-beerex over this weekend

I've been on lots of walks around the Chess Valley and the Chilterns. There's some beautiful countryside around there, and yet it's so near London.

Another great walk yesterday (13 miles) starting and ending at Chorleywood Station.

After the first hour of drizzle the sun eventually appeared and our stop for lunch in a pub garden in Flaunden was pleasantly warm. They kindly let us eat our own food at their outside tables as long as we all bought drinks. Not all pubs are as hospitable and it's always wise to check beforehand.

We went to see the wild daffodils at Farndale in North Yorkshire yesterday - absolutely beautiful. They are at their best at the moment, well worth going to see, but it's probably best not to go at the weekends when it gets very busy.

I had a delightful 12 mile walk today starting and ending at Tring Station. It was so warm and spring-like. The surrounding countryside seen from the top of Ivinghoe Beacon is beautiful with a good view of the lion carved into a distant chalk hillside, not far from Whipsnade Zoo.

There were not many bluebells in flower but the ones I did see were very definitely the English variety - a very vivid blue and drooping.

After the walk I went to Tring's wonderful natural history museum which was well worth a visit.

A long, tiring but satisfying day.
