Nice surprise when I switched on for Popmaster. Good to hear the Strawbs as well!

The Strawbs were a superb very underrated band and their music is sadly now rarely heard on radio

I'm spoiled for choice now because I enjoy Richard's shows but Mark Goodier is doing an interview with Paul Simon all this week - I think I'll just take a radio outside and get stuck into some serious weeding

I wonder if the music was changed at all for Richard? If not, it goes to show how a good non gabbling presenter can still do a good show with the same tracks!

They were. "From The Wychwood" (featuring Rick Wakeman and Blue Weaver) is my favourite album which my mates and I used to play over and over again. "Grave New World" was the next favourite.

It's a pity that all the band is known for in pop circles is "Part of The Union" (which I didn't like).

Dave Cousins later put a lot of money into a Torbay-based radio station - DevonAir - which is now part of one of those big, horrible, bland radio "brands".

Got to agree with you there Colin. The Strawbs blend of folk and prog was really good. An early song"Hangman and the Papist" is particularly good. As you say they are probably best known for the poor Part of the Union which was very much a song of it's time( early-mid 70S) but that really wasn't their style.

I think Dave Cousins also had something to do with a commercial station up on Teeside several years ago.

Bursting at the Seams was also a generally good album but I agree it's sad the Strawbs always seem to be remembered for 'Part Of the Union' when that track was actually very untypical of their usual output - partly because it was written by Hudson Ford rather than Dave Cousins or Dave Lambert who wrote most of the best stuff

Although I can't deny Rick Wakeman is a great musical genius I personally preferred the Strawbs stuff after John Hawken joined them on keyboards on the album after 'Bursting at the Seams' the name of which I'm frantically trying to remember

I remember they did a great gig at the De Montford Hall in Leicester in 1974 and a few of us managed to get back stage but the band had apparently made a fast exit - mind you it was nearly midnight as I recall

Just remembered the album which was called 'Hero and Heroine' - and I didn't google it before anyone asks Shocked

I was just about to chip in with Hero and Heroine there Ruddles, the one after "Ghosts " was also pretty good with the ethereal Grace Darling. I remember seeing David Cousins bobbing about on a boat off the Farne Islands doing a promo on local TV.

It wasn't without its flaws but it was miles better than ZB.

Funny how everyone likes and rates The Strawbs now but they never achieved the success of, say, Lindisfarne then.

He said " The Voice might have changed, but the music will be the same"

I was hearing Chris saying to Richard during the hand over. " How does it work, as Zoe phoned in a 7.50am and your hear to present the show"?...

I do wonder if Richard is at the station ready as the standby man? I guess he doesn't live that far away from Radio 2!!...

I don't think many BBC presenters live that far away - I remember reading on the 5 Live blog a few weeks ago their presenters doing a "24 hours in the day of 5 Live" and they were all writing about waking up at (for example) 4:15 in the morning and being at the studios within the hour, having had a car pick them up.

Richard must be the standby man, and invoicing the BBC for doing that easy service. I suppose it's Thunderbirds Go....Richard ( International Rescue) Allinson.

I remember Mark Goodier said 'he always was just a call away for any cover at Radio 2, before he left for Smooth Radio...

Ron, I bought every Strawbs album released in the 70s and I had them until about 7 years ago when I stored them in a garage when moving house and the owner of the garage had his property repossessed and all the contents were disposed of by the bailiffs

Nobody told me and I lost my whole vinyl collection

You just can't compare The Strawbs with Lindisfarne in my view - that's like comparing a Rolls Royce with a Lexus
Not that I have anything against Lexus or Lindisfarne I hasten to add

I absolutely agree with that. When I was a student in Plymouth we had The Strawbs play several times and Lindisfarne played, too. (I seem to recall Genesis supporting Lindisfarne at Plymouth Guildhall, as it happens!). But they were two very different bands - Strawbs were more serious whilst Lindisfarne were out for a laugh. And boy could they sink crateloads of Newcastle brown while on stage! (It was in their rider - a crateload for each band member).

I did hear Chris building up Richard. I think it's little bit of a joke around the station, how he's dragged in to cover and cover someone who is covering. Is it the voice has really gone, or she just got so stressed cause she can't work the desk correctly, or the sun is out in Brighton? Rolling Eyes

I enjoy some 6music, and some shows are excellent, BUT some shows are as bad, if not worse than R2, especially the early / morning shows Rolling Eyes

A great show delivered by Richard last week.

I believe the mid-morning show is his favourite cover.

I hope he gets to cover again in this slot next time Ken Bruce decides to have a holiday.
