Yes, it's very noticeable. He's very knowledgeable on Northern Soul in addition to 60s/70s music, which is impressive.

Actually there was a post on R2 board way back when he was first off (Easter time?) saying that he had cancer, it had been seen in a paper apparently. I forget who posted it but the post was removed before anyone replied to it.

Hope it's not the case, maybe a family member is ill.

That's a very bold statement Mark.

I, for one, can fault "CT shows". Chris is too loud and shouty for starters. Interrupting Sally Traffic is a big no-no especially when the nations driver's are trying to listen to what's going on on their stretch of road - especially when he makes such a big deal of Sally coughing.

His love of rock music, his constant references to "Bob Plant", his patronising attitude towards the Battle Of The Oldies contestants, in fact just about everything he does makes you really miss SW and all his idiosyncrasies. CT has got worse as the week has gone on. This style of broadcasting has no real place on R2 and is much better suited to commercial radio where the listeners become so numbed by the constant barrage and repetition of adverts that they hardly listen anyway.

Is there anything you dislike about R2 Mark? Stop trying to be so diplomatic and tell it like it really is.

and me... Laughing I won't say I "don't like" Chris Tarrant because I don't know him, he's probably a great guy but he's never appealed to me at all.
I didn't like what I've heard of his show so far.. it's just not right for my idea of radio.
( I thought Tizwas was just embarrassing Rolling Eyes }

Yesterday, interestingly, controversially even; CT said, “this is great music, we don’t play the same the set of records over and over again like certain commercial stations I could mention”….erm…... does he listen to Radio 2 regularly?

He's a bit odd really, he introduces tracks, and interviews people, like they're questions on WWTBAM...just be normal please, and that's a pretty wide spectrum for me, but CT is way off beam with his delivery, if there is a big ball park we all play in, he's never seen it! Still good to listen to though, which worries me: perhaps the ball-park is bigger than I think. Odd that.

He is too loud and OTT for my liking, a bit like CE. I was just getting to like Dale's show!

Me too. Dale got the tone just right. Tarrant is just trying too hard to sound like he's having a good time.

I do find Chris a little bit over the top sometimes but I think the music (especially today) has been really good, which is always a priority over whether I like someone or not.
Also as with Dale it is nice to have the guests on for a reasonable amount of time, unlike with Steve where they're wheeled in and wheeled out within 5 minutes.

I've heard that the insufferable idiot known as Evans plays decent music sometimes, but that doesn't in any way pursuade me to tune in. If all I primarily want is decent music I'll get it via iTunes, Spotify or good old CDs.

Thankfully Radcliffe and Maconie's arrival on 6 Music have given me an alternative to Tarrant.

What a boring show Tarrant presided over yesterday, I was unlucky enough to be in the car most of the afternoon, all I could hear were his boring gobby me me me ramblngs a la Evans.

The best part of Steve Wrights show is the Non Stop Oldies, why replace it with the non entity that is Battle of the Oldies, what's all that about ?

I have to admit that I'm not too keen on Chris Tarrant on the radio. I haven't got anything against him personally, I just don't think its that interesting.

Radcliffe & Maconie on 6 Music, on the other hand, is very interesting. They sound very "at home" already!

Totally agree, its a pain not to be able to listen in the car without a considerable outlay. Would happily put up with 6 Music on MW.

Radcliffe & Maconie are already at home, feet under desk, fried bread exchanging and small hat wearing. Brilliant stuff.

I switched back over to the last hour of Tarrant at 4pm when the boys finished yesterday and the contrast hit me right in the face. I actually prefer CT to Wright but it was like Stale FM compared to the 3 hours of RadMac I'd just indulged.

Bob Shennan, what have you done?

Never mind. Radio 2 is now so bad for most of the day (from early morning through to early evening) that it makes no odds to most people who no longer bother to listen!

He's much more enthusiastic than some, and plays some great music. I think he has freedom what he plays, apart from the playlisted stuff.

I wouldn't turn my radio off but equally I wouldn't go out of my way to listen

To me his show is the classic curate's egg situation - good in parts

I wish we could have Dale Winton back covering Sad

There is enthusiastic and manic Mark, I'd say he borders on the latter. The music is probably okay but that's only half the package as far as I'm concerned. If I can't stand the presenter I switch off.

The problem is Mark that Dale lives in Florida but I dare say that he still does TV work in Britain and even if not I'm sure the BBC could stretch to making it worth his while to do a couple of weeks cover on Radio 2

I reckon he'd get many more listeners than Tarrant or SW for that matter

He doesn't play anything of any worth that I don't have in my iTunes collection so what does that say for the music he plays?

Chris Tarrant is certainly a much better cover than Dale Winton.

Chris has a great sense of humour-used to really enjoy listening to him on the Capital Breakfast Show with Russ Kane in the Flying Eye.

He did say when he was on The One Show a few months back, that he does bring his own music in to play.

He may be given the chance to slip in one or two of his own favourites but I cannot see him being given complete freedom over the running order.

I enjoying the music and shows, it's probarly a little loud for some of you. Laughing I can't see why he had to play the intro of Bon Jovi - Living On A Pray and say this is 88291 Radio 2 Tarrant In The Afternoon, when he's already done the intro?

Not so much the music as the presenter Mark. Can't stand him on the radio. In fact I'd say the presenter is probably the main reason I turn of the radio for.

I agree H.....

Some of the music isn't too bad, probably a bit too much heavy rock, although I don't mind the odd track but it's just.....him.

Or is it me? Am I just getting too old for this shouty in your face style of radio? I'm only 44 but I'd rather the R2 presenters just played good music interspersed with intelligent banter instead of trying to be the star of the show.

I entirely agree with your comments Angus

What we need is good and varied music coupled with intelligent banter about the music

I must admit though rock music is my favourite genre so I can't really say Chris Tarrant is by any means the worst presenter on the network
I think there are an increasing number of candidates who qualify for that award Sad

Really enjoying tuning into Chris currently-much more preferable than the regular incumbent.

It would be good if Chris could bring Russ Kane and Cara Noble out of their respective "retirements" to join him.

I don''t think Tarrant has forgiven Kara Noble for selling topless pictures of Sophie Rhys Jones to the Sun. She was working at Heart London at the time, but was sacked for being the station into disrepute.

TBH Mark with comments like that I can see that it's listeners like yourself that are responsible for the direction that R2 has chosen to pursue.

Chris Tarrant is the epitome of commercial radio at it's absolute worst. I simply cannot understand why, when R2 is ultimately funded by the license payer that it continues to strive to draw listeners from the commercial sector.

Someone needs to tell CT that this is not the 70's, nor is it Tiswas, OTT, or whatever and just to calm down a bit.

Utter rubbish. I would honestly prefer to listen to Chris Evans.

TBH Angus your postings annoy me.

I am perfectly entitled to my opinions and whether I like Chris Tarrant or not has got absolutely nothing to do with the direction Radio 2 is heading.

I also really like Huey's Morgan recent new show-your argument does not stack up.

Well I don't purposely post to annoy you so sorry if it comes across that way but I'm just expressing an opinion as you are.

My point was - and you clearly missed it - that I cannot understand why Radio 2 are trying to compete with the commercial sector by dragging in presenters of CT's ilk.

The general consensus of opinion amongst the hardcore R2 listener is that we do not want change, we don't want idiots like Evans, Ball, Tarrant, Carr, Tarbuck tainting our airwaves with pointless chatter and banal text and email subjects.

I admit there's nothing we can do about it while BS is in charge but that doesn't mean we can't voice an opinion once in a while.

My fear is that SW, as cheesy as he is, may eventually be replaced by CT, and that Zoe may eventually get Kens's job although if that were the way things worked at R2 since the Douglas/Shennan takeover then Stu Mac should have got the Drivetime job instead of Evans
