Seems Radio 2 are looking for old Alan Freeman recordings of Pick Of The Pops.

From the website:

Quote:
CALLING COLLECTORS
Remember the lost Dr Who tapes and the lost Dad's Army tapes? We need your help with Pick Of The Pops!

We are looking for recordings of the radio show from when Alan Freeman presented it. In particular from September 1997 and, going further back, various editions from 1966 to 1972.

If you think you might be able to help Radio 2, please email phil.hughes@bbc.co.uk

We'd be pleased to hear from anyone who has recordings

You mean they wiped the ones from 1997?! Shocked I thought the Beeb were a bit more careful in preserving shows like that of more recent times.

I'd want a guarantee of legal immunity before I handed anything over - not that I have any such recordings you understand Shocked

Apparently the BBC didn't consistently keep everything, i.e. including the DJ hosted shows, until as late as 2008.

Most will be on Tape so hopefully that is at a quality they can record from. Have the BBC got a right to pay, because you have done an illegal act by recording from the Radio, which wasn't allowed. They are asking for there goods back. It's like someone stealing from a shop.

As long as you recorded the shows for your own use only and have never made them available to third parties I think the BBC would be unlikely to take any action

Whether or not they choose to pay a fee in order to obtain items which they foolishly failed to retain is of course an exercise purely based on market forces

They will be able to enhance them Mark. Even if you transfer cassettes/reel tapes to minidiscs they seem much brighter without any special treatments that the Beeb will have at their disposal.

AFAIK, none of those that returned Doctor Whos, Steptoes or Dad's Army have been prosecuted - the tapes have been returned, they've got credits on all releases and *may* have been reimbursed.
