I joined Facebook shortly before Christmas, largely because Tynedale Community Radio has a page on it, and have got hooked.

So I'm sorry to see it coming under the cosh for allegedly getting in the way of social interaction and, by some leap of the imagination, increasing the possibility of cancer amongst its users!

Of course I'm aware that these sites aren't everyone's cup of tea (so, if that's the case, don't use them!) and that care needs to be exercised in deciding what info to put on them.

But, on the whole, I think the stated criticisms are hogwash.

Almost any activity can be bad for you if taken to excess but, in moderation, why not go ahead and enjoy? When I was a boy, fifty years ago, TV was going to send us all to hell in a handcart, but it hasn't. Facebook has been a boon for me during my current period of post-operative limited social circulation and I fully intend to continue to use it in a guilt-free manner.

What do others, both users and non-users, think?

Ian.

Facebook really stole MySpace's crown as the web's most essential social networking "place to be seen" and whilst I think it's great for all sorts of stuff (a friend recently spent a year backpacking around India and provided regular updates on her progress, including images and video and it was a fantastic demonstration of the use of such resources) I do know lots of people, primarily in their 20s, whose lives are completely taken over with it and spend many hours of the day logged in. Some people are completely obsessed with their existence on Facebook and it's fascinating to see this in action.

One thing's for sure, it will be a helluva lot easier for the "Timeteam" researchers of 100 years' time to gain a realistic picture of what people's livess were like in these current times!

It's weird, but that's the way it is. My parents used to moan at me for spending hours in my bedroom listening to 45rpm records and reading "junk" music papers so I'm not sure things have changed much with my own offspring.

I tried facebook last week because my children are all on there, and tell me that "nobody" uses Myspace anymore. I have a Myspace mainly for keeping up with my children ( they all have one too), my Mum and a few friends. I have mine set to private - not that there's much( if any) "data" about me on there- not even my surname. The facebook place wanted to know far too much about me , I gave it up as a really bad idea. Giving your e-mail address and password to a third party organisation is complete madness.

I do like Facebook for giving me easy access to my friends and what they're up to, plus it's great for promoting my theatre and keeping in touch with people I don't see very often.

But I don't do much activity on it and I'm not a friend collector - I prefer to keep it to those I know (albeit even vaguely - people I've met on internet messageboards, for instance!)

Heh, maybe. There's a message board I go too that is pretty much dying off because we all chat on Facebook now (though not entirely - it's also partly because we've drifted away from the subject that brought us together. It's like 'real life' but you notice it more online)

I use Facebook to keep in touch with people outside the UK. I have 9 friends and I'm told I'm sad. I know of some 20 somethings who have in excess of 400. How the hell do you take any notice of them all (or remember who they are)?
But, each to their own, I'm sure the Government will tell us of another way to shorten our lives by next week!
Maybe Ian R could set up an"R2OK Group". Only joking, just seen a "Streatham Woolworths Group" honest, on Facebook. Why?

I registered about 18 months ago but I haven't used it apart from putting a few names in a search out of curiosity. A few people have sent me invites(?) to become a friend (is that the right term for it?) but to me it's too much like hard work keeping up with it all! Maybe it's the fallout of having helped run a busy message board and now I just want to dip in and out when I feel like it. Sorry if that sounds anti social, it's not meant to!

I'd rather email or phone the person directly than leave something like a 'round robbin' for everyone to see. If I'm on a message board most have PM facilities if you want to 'chat' one to one.

Not so. My youngest son is totally uninterested and, though Mrs W is registered as a user, she rarely goes on. Each to their own--one size doesn't fit all.

I really like Facebook, and it's a fantastic development in my opinion. I know of several instances where long-lost friends have come together to exchange pictures, videos, stories and memories in addition to providing updates on what they're up to at any one time. It's also a great way for people who share common interests to come together regardless of where they are in the world.

My daughter has loads and loads of friends on facebook (some of whom she hasn't had contact with since she was at school - she's now in her late 20s) and she's learning something new every day thanks to the fact that she maintains contact with people all over the world.

One thing I'm really lost on, though, is........... Twitter. I don't get Twitter (which perhaps is proof that I'm of "a certain age"!). Smile

I don't get Twitter either Colby, and I'm not really into blogs which seem to be the other 'in' thing to do.

Twitter is really a bit weird, and I haven't got the hang of it. I can see it being useful to promote my Theatre but I need followers to do that... and I've no idea how to get them.

You're not the only one Toggy. I don't use facebook, nor the other one, my space. I can't see it happening in the foreseeable future either.

I don't quite get Twitter and have enough to do with developing my interest in Facebook but I suspect that one day my curiosity will get the better of me.

Meanwhile, on Facebook, I've just joined a SOTS appreciation group!

I'm signed up on Twitter. It's strange and I can't see it will be the biggest hit like Facebook and Myspace... I like Myspace for the music, shame that Facebook don't have the same function installed yet for your own playlist.

Twitter is huge and getting more popular all the time. Unlike MySpace, it hasn't yet reached its nadir. Twitter is a completely different type of application to the others though. A bit weird, really.

Still on Myspace - don't bother with any of the others. Bands keep contacting me but so far none of them appeal. Have had some interesting conversations with a few of my favourite artists this last year via Myspace, though - a much easier way of contacting them.

Decided today I was fed up of all the crap 'friends' post on Facebook, I've had a cull, some are gone, some I'm just hiding all their posts now, so now I've got under 20 'friends' but there's still so much coming in it's such a waste of my time to look at it, and three or four of them could be for the chop soon.

Mad

Is it possible to get rid of 'friends' without them knowing you have done? I seem to have contracted so many people who just use it for 'propaganda' purposes, but I'm reluctant to to upset them.

Such a wuss, I know. Sad

Well, you can hide their messages so you never have to read them, that's what I've done, but I guess they still get your messages and might reply or have 'conversations' with you without you knowing?

Other option is just to delete them from your friends list and I expect they'll get a message saying 'Minxy is not your friend' Confused

I'm sure you don't get a message when "friends" delete you. So if they've got loads of "friends" they probably won't even notice - delete away!

You don't get a message when someone deletes you on FB! Someone accidentally deleted me a couple of months ago and it only came to light when I was looking through the suggested friends section and their name came up there.

But its as easy to hide the person's posts especially if they're so obsessed with it that they have to detail of their day ("going to take the dog out for a walk", "just back from walking the dog", "going to Tescos for some milk", "looking at the milk in Tescos", "buying milk in Tescos") and then complaining because they never have any free time.....

I keep threatening to kill off my Facebook account because it's just too much of a distraction, but just as I summon up the courage I get somebody wanting to "friend" me whom I've not seen nor heard from for 30 years.

Only the other day one of my college lecturers surfaced via Facebook - and I discovered that he's still lecturing - in Sydney, Australia! It's been great catching up. Without FB this would never have happened. In fact, I re-established contact will all but one of my student tutorial group of seven.

Right I decided to do another round of deleting 'friends' from my Facebook account, I selected 5 of them and well I can't seem to find find how to totally erase them. I'm sure it used to be easy. I've followed instructions but they just end up on a 'Restricted List. I WANT TO GET RID! Rolling Eyes

The "new look" is cr*p!

I do love the competitions side of FB though! Earlier this year I got the chance to meet Imelda May at the recording of a TV show in Belfast after winning tickets and today I received a fleece, a hat, a t-shirt and a dozen cans of beer after winning another comp!

A mate has said you now have to go to the wall of each of the people you wish to "erase"; top right are three boxes "Friends" / "Subscribed" / "Message".

"Friends" & "Subscribed" are ticked. Point the cursor at "Friends" & a list of options appears. At the end of that list is "unfriend."

Hmmm, I unfriended one, but gone to others' walls and the '(Tick) Friends' menu doesn't come down so not been able to unfriend others. I'll try again later.

I still don't use Facebook etc, but was sent this today. As I believe some of our number do use it, and it says that Snopes confirms it's authenticity. I thought I'd put this here.

PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS NOTICE TO YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, CONTACTS!

In the coming days, you should be aware.....Do not open any message with an attachment called: Invitation FACEBOOK, regardless of who sent it. It is a virus that opens an OlympIc torch that burns the whole hard disc C of your computer.

This virus will be received from someone you had in your address book. That's why you should send this message to all your contacts. It is better to receive this email 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive an email called: Invitation FACEBOOK, though sent by a friend, do not open it and delete it immediately. It is the worst virus announced by CNN. A new virus has been discovered recently that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.

It is a Trojan Horse that asks you to install an adobe flash plug-in. Once you install it, it's all over. And there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information of their function is saved.

SNOPES SAYS THIS IS TRUE

I don't use it either, Toggy. Plenty of friends and relations do use it so I get bits of interesting info passed on to me sometimes.

However, I shall never open an account. It seems like something I would have to keep a very close eye on in order to avoid getting caught out by possible loopholes due to not quite understanding all the in and outs.

Who knows what mischievous, embarrassing or destructive messages could be posted by a so-called friend who might have it in for you for some reason?

This trojan (which affects Windows users only, not Apple Mac OSX or Linux) has no connection whatever to Facebook and therefore has no impact on one's use of Facebook. It's using the word Facebook in the subject line of an email to snare unwitting victims into opening the email and unleashing the virus.

As always - the best defence is common sense. Never open an email containing an attachment that comes from a source you don't know or can trust.
