Went to see black stone cherry in norwich last night and they were excellent but the support band black spiders just blew me away, some really good songs and a good frontman.
Support acts can be poor but i was very impressed,so how about you? seen any good support bands?

I've seen some superb support acts over the years

Although I might be a little biased the best ever support act I saw was a band from Shrewsbury who were signed to my own former independent label - they were called Jojo Gretch and they supported Saxon on a British tour many years ago but we had to pay for the privilege - I doubt many people realise that little known bands usually have to pay to get exposure on a tour with a major artist or rather their record company does

Most support acts sadly never get the recognition they deserve but not always

For example on the Manics tour at the end of last year they were supported by British Sea Power who by then were already quite well known and had released albums which made the charts and indeed they were quite superb

The other day I was watching my local BBC news programme and there was a feature about a young band from Liverpool who had apparently won a competition to support Bon Jovi at their forthcoming gig in Manchester

What's unusual about them is that the lead guitarist was born with no right hand and he plays the guitar with a false metal attatchment and from what I saw does so really well
With the TV exposure and the Bon Jovi gig hopefully they should go on to bigger and better things but there are never any guarantees in the music business

Oh it was really mainly a hobby littlepieces

I used to have a friend who owned and ran a recording studio in Wrexham and like most studios it was not in use all the time

One day he suggested to me that if I could come up with some money for promotion etc we could use the free studio time to start up a label and sign decent young artists with a view to getting them known and then perhaps selling the contract on to the bigger labels if there was sufficient interest

It's not the kind of thing to go into if you want to make a fast buck but we had some great fun at the time

I met quite a number of famous bands including the Inspiral Carpets (in the days when Noel Gallagher was roadying for them) The Charlatans and even the Bay City Rollers Embarassed

Perhaps the most memorable though was James and in fact the well known track 'Sit Down' was written by Tim Booth in the kitchen of my mates house just next door to the studio
Happy days

Anyway getting back to British Sea Power I know Radcliffe and Maconie used to play a lot of their stuff a couple of years ago and as you say I never really rated it but I have to say that live they were absolutely fantastic and if ever you get the chance to see them you should definitely have a look

Support bands I remember seeing in the Seventies were Queen supporting Mott the Hoople, The Jam supporting The Stranglers and Be Bop Deluxe supporting Cockney Rebel, who were all excellent. I can't remember anything of any others, although I went to quite a few gigs.

I went to the Battle of the Brass (two Balkan brass bands) in London recently and they had a really good support band called The Turbans. If anyone likes world music they're worth looking out for.

I saw then twice, first time just after they had released their first 'In the City' album, it was a very small hall , the students union at Huddersfield Poly, and it was packed, they had to go through the crowd to get to the stage !! The set was basically the album which was great. The next time was again at Hudds but in the main hall when the band were more famous. Very Happy .

I also saw the Stranglers at the same small venue, again after their first album was released, we had to wait until Hugh was released by the police, a problem the night before, and there was only about 20 of us in the crowd, they were good. Very Happy
