Probably because all of the decent presenters who could run their own desks are being sidelined or shoved into graveyard slots. Time for a mass cull, perhaps starting at the top.......with Mr Shennan.

There are too many top names at the station who can't run the desks and it cost a lot too to staff them. Vanessa Feltz, Paul O'Grady and Graham Norton. When Chris Tarrant covers he can run the desk. Zoe Ball even had to learn to run the desk.

They could drop Mrs. Cook and bring back Richard Allinson. Alan Carr belongs in Eastenders as Ethel Skinner's grandson.

Unfortunatly staff maybe relocated North to be used for production staff in Salford. If this happens then Radio 1 & 2 need to think about this.

Wednesday's "The Media Show" on R4 (1.30pm) highlighted the same report and the "52 staff needed to run R1 Newsbeat", plus the fact that the R2 newsreaders do just that and nothing else.

If I was made controller of R2 tomorrow, the presenters who couldn't drive a desk themselves would be out of the door the same day. I'd also lock Alan Carr away in a broom cupboard so he couldn't be inflicted upon anyone else....

I think the article was ageist. I'm sure the Great Desmo does not have a house full of studio assistants and producers at home in Perthshire.

Apart from right at the start, I have always driven the desk myself during stints on hospital and community radio--much preferable and if a technical duffer like me can do it.....

Ian.
