Think Johnnie is a 60s guy at heart as he said. Shame Brian isn't well. Joe did present a couple of SOTS while Brian was off a few years ago.

I'm a believer that your formative years remain the decade of choice. The music played so far today is favouring the 70s.

I think although the show is very well presented the choice of 60's tracks is absolutely awful

I've just heard the 60's won which tells me a great deal about today's Radio 2 audience

And why on earth did we need the annoying ginger person to announce the result Mad

Overall fairly disappointing in my view

The 60s/70s show was a real disappointment. There was far too much chatter and too little music. Also, till a very late stage I thought Joe Brown's selection had far too little variety.

I voted for 60s, as in the long run I prefer them, but I thought that today the 70s selection was much the better of the two.

Good on Joe Brown for standing in but how we need Brian and others of his calibre.

Ian.

I'm not giving him the chance of sounding any better.....he's got babbling Ball on with him so twice the nightmare IMHO!

80s and 90s not fave times of mine.

I wish they would have thought of having a vote at the end of the day as to whether 2Day was good or bad on the whole.....................

I used to enjoy him at 5pm, they should put him back there and I'd even survive mayo at Breakfast.

I agree about the 60/70s but still a nice change.

I gave Evans and Ball a miss

Had to laugh when Janice asked Ron Sexsmith if radio stations in his area did this kind of thing ?. The BBC have done it once in nearly 50 years Laughing

There are some good and bad points with 2day. I thought 80's and 90's was a good listen, but a lot of loudness. There isn't really an 80's or 90's show on the station, apart from POTP's and the odd tune added into the playlists. As Johnnie said " Hopefully 2Day might be a regular thing ". Radio 1 in the 80's and 90's used to do regular shows every year, before it was all changed. I think Richard Allinson is years to come will host specialist shows like a few others.

At the end of the day this isn't a thread to start shouting down presenters who you do and don't like. It's tough as they all are part of the stations line up.

No there isn't Mark, you listen to Radio 1 if you want that.

The day they put an 80s/90s show of R2 is the day it goes off and stays off for ever for me. Those decades are covered on pretty much every other music station so keep them off Radio 2 please.

I'm not really in favour of single genre shows anyway. Much prefer a mix of them all if they fit the remit of Radio 2.

I have long thought that what Radio 2 does clearly lack is a weekly rock show covering all the decades ranging from the time around early Led Zeppelin through the era of prog rock in the early 70's including punk and new wave in the late 70's/early 80's and of course grunge and heavy metal and perhaps folk rock

It's a shame the great Tommy Vance is no longer around but I'm sure people like Johnnie Walker or Paul Gambaccini could host a good rock show Smile

Radio 1 don't play 80's music generally, apart from Vernon Kay adds an odd track, and now Reggie Yates hosts a request show on Saturday afternoons.

That's a little unfair!

There is definitely a need for a Sounds Of The 80's show on R2, not so keen about the 90's but in fairness if you we 25 in 1995, that makes you 41 now and well within the R2 demographic.

Sounds Of The 60's began in 1983, only 13 years after the decade ended, its been 21 years since the 80's ended, so we're well overdue, Sounds Of The 70's began 19 years after the decade ended.

I can easily wait for Sounds of the 90's!

I don't see why 80's music should not be played on Radio 2 and indeed it already is in many daytime shows and often on POTP

After all the beginning of the 80's decade happened more than thirty years ago so nobody could reasonably expect Radio One to be playing much from that era for today's youngsters

The issue is as to whether we need a specialist show which I don't think we do and I'm happy to hear any music on Radio 2 right up to say 1999 but I think perhaps after that it should be mainly left to Radio One unless particular tracks fit the R2 profile

Radio 1 Extra should perhaps be changed so as to form a halfway house between the two networks rather than churning out the stuff it does now to a specialised minority audience

Don't know about anyone else but I'm getting a bit fed with this 2Day lark. Too much chit chat and I don't really enjoy more than one presenter at a time.

Did someone suggest it should have been done on a Bank Holiday? If they did I agree.

2day couldn't be aired on a Bank Holiday cause some of the main presenters don't work those days under there contracts. People distrubed about 80's music played on Radio 2 and shouldn't be because they are heard else where. This is a national radio station and heard across the UK and even world wide online now, so I think if there's space then why not!! A lot of chit chat has to happen, Helen, because people need to know about shows which the presenters are on about. I must admit Michael Ball and David Jacobs show is more about David than Michael. It does seem to me some presenters are dragged in to work the desk, cause they don't have enough low paid tech ops to do this, and it's been filmed too.

What a miserable lot you all are! Yes, there's a bit too much chat, and it's a little disjointed... but it's great to hear such different types of music and such fun, friendly, knowledgeable presenters in the daytime. It's good fun.

This is old ground and we've all discussed it many times but, IMO Radio 1.5 is not the way to go, someone born in 1976 it could be argued that their era of music was 1992 to 1999 (16 - 25ish), but like it or not that person is now in the R2 demographic.

The way to go is leave R2 as it is (but with a better breakfast jock!), the real need is for a Radio 2.5 or 2xtra, for those that have outgrown Radio 2, just as we all out grew Radio 1.

I know I'm not going to be popular here but R6Music does not fill that gap, and both R2 & R2xtra could more than cover the 'specialist' aspect that R6 offers. R6 is a niche that in these hard up times that the BBC does not really need to fill (the original decision to close it was commercially the right one), R2 covers that niche in the early evening, although did it better with Radcliffe and Maconie.

The BBC need to offer the over 60's far more in radio programming, I hope the situation improves before I hit that milestone.

I agree with Helen that today has done no favours for Radio 2, one big waste of time and licence payers dosh!

Yes there's some good stuff and pleasing to hear a variety of music we don't normally hear in the day Very Happy

Has anyone worked out yet what's its all about and it's aim ? Do they want more evening / night listeners or show how limited R2 is during the day ?.

If it's to show what is on during an evening / night then why did we get Evans / Ball doing 80/90s, thats not an evening show ?

Something could be worked out and I think you'll find all of the presenters have appeared at sometime during their careers on a Bank Holiday, even if only once.

I disagree on both these points Mark. There didn't need to be so much chit chat, with the amount of trails I think we all knew each show was about. If not you'd have picked it up by the end anyway.

I'd say on a day like this what the heck does it matter if neither presenters are driving the desk, for heavens sake! Rolling Eyes

PS I gave up all together halfway through David Jacobs and Michael Ball

I suppose it's good to have a little change every now and then but I have to say I'm not keen on specialist music programs during the day.
We listen at work and stuff like the live sessions and the documentary hour seemed quite dull.
Whereas if I was sitting at home at night listening with undivided attention it would be different but I really don't think stuff like that works for a lot of people during the daytime.
All Radio 2 needs to do is to keep the format as it is but just VARY THE MUSIC PLEASE!!!!! (yes I was shouting), and play some more music aimed at the target audience instead of 6 or 7 A list records played endlessly.

Yes, I heard David Jacobs and Michael Ball when I was out driving this afternoon. I don't think Desmond C did himself any favours by rambling on about how he started broadcasting from his home. Even David Jacobs kept trying to bring it to an end whilst Michael Ball could be heard sniggering in the background.

I don't know what today was all about. It felt like the old Rag Days we used to have at universities. I suspect that those taking part were the ones getting the most enjoyment out of it. And what the 'new' R2 listeners made of it all I can't imagine. What was the purpose of it all?

Agree Gazmando, we just need a bit of variation in the music, a few more album tracks would be good as well. JW had the right idea all those years ago on Radio 1..........

Think you're right as well Minx, in that the presenters got more out of it than we did!

Helen, There are listeners who don't know nothing about some of the shows, so chit chat has to happen to explain things.

Tevor Nelson was probarly at the side of the webcam as some don't like to be seen on there. They have to sign something to be seen on the webcam.

There is a lot of pictures and videos from the day.

I completely disagee.

The current daytime schedules suck, and need to be completely overhauled asap-get rid of Messrs Bruce, Vine and Wright as a minimum, and replace them with some new fresh talent.

Messrs Evans and Mayo are doing good jobs, so keep them in the current line-up etc.

Hi Toggy,

I too thought all (well those that I did listen to) of them would have been better if they had gone on for 90 mins or 2 hours. There wouldn't have been time for them all I suppose but in some cases they were over before they had got started.

I did think Dermot and JV were good together, and I'm not normally a fan of shows with more than one presenter.

Can't wait for next Wednesday when it will disappear from the listen again lists and we will no longer have to endure the endless trails to do just that.

Once was more than enough for most of what I heard.

It was OK but if the idea was to promote the diversity of programmes after 7pm/weekends why were most of those taking part those normally heard 6am-7pm weekdays...

I'm ok with the idea that Radio 2 widens out the variety of music it plays...

I think that perhaps the presenters enjoyed it more than listeners would had they stayed with the whole 12 hours and when the live chat was opened up all many seemed to want to do is slag Steve Wright off, more for how he looks rather than what he plays.

And the guy might have a medical condition or have side effects of medication being taken...

I agree programmes might've been better had they been 90mins or two hours in length.
