This is worse than the celebrities phones been hacked into.
Who in the right mind at the News Of The World would hire a private Detective to look into this. This is a serious issue and very low. I can't beleive how the Dowler family must feel.
How would a compensation help the family?
Someone at the News Of The World will need to arrested and jailed for this...

You couldn't make this up. Could Levi Bellfield appeal his conviction based on this development? |

I doubt there would be sufficient grounds for any appeal
As for the 'News of the Screws' nothing surprises me - I knew several of their reporters around 2002 and it was quite obvious to me what was going on long before the police investigation ever got started
In my view a lot of this stuff was covered up by the powers that be at the time - it just confirms my opinion of most journalists and tabloid editors _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It's a shame the Government can't shut down the bloody paper. They should try and block the Murdoch take on Sky, but no Cheque book can bring back a life.... |

Mark, I'm really glad that at last you have come to realise the corruption involved with the press generally and the tabloid press in particular
By the way I'm not having a go at you- I'm genuinely glad that now you can see the reality of what goes on
I could tell you lots of stuff from the early 2000's which were distorted and covered up by the press simply because they believed that Tony Blair was the best thing since sliced bread and toed the line in terms of his agenda
Of course nobody believes him now since the revelations over the Iraq war but there were many injustices during that period of time which ruined peoples lives one of which is close to my heart
I can also tell you a very interesting story about certain circumstances surrounding the death of weapons expert David Kelly which would shock you and which the powers that be are desperate to cover up and which I have already recorded with the Daily Mail
If anyone is interested I will tell you but if I suddenly disappear from this forum you will all know why _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Mark: I doubt the Government would want to 'shut down' the News Of The World when it and the other Murdoch papers were responsible for the Tories'/Coalition election victory! |

The story steps up a gear with 7/7 familes phones being hacked and even the familes of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. It's disgraceful how someone in News Of The World can go that low and even worse than Paul Gascoigne phone being hacked into.. I can see Andy Coulson will have his time in court, but won't go down on his own. Readers should boycott the paper, but they won't as people like scandal. It could damage News International who own other papers including The Times. Rebecca Wade will need to step down. Shame Murdoch can disappear, but hopefully the Government will hit him hard, and block the whole sky take over..

That's something I don't think we will ever know the truth about. I don't think I'd be shocked somehow.

I know enough about the situation Helen to be absolutely sure that a huge cover up has gone on and whether the truth will ever come out is doubtful because even though we have a different Government, we still have the same senior civil servants and MI5 officers in place who will no doubt continue the cover up - if anyone wants further details on what I know about it probably better to send me a PM given these circumstances
Getting back to the phone hacking scandal I think that the enquiry has now widened out quite considerably because we now know that these events were going on long before 2003 which was for some unknown reason the date the police chose to start their enquiries from and also we now know that the hacking went way beyond the areas of celebrities and politicians and extended to ordinary people who happened to find themselves in the media spotlight for whatever reason
As I said I knew several reporters at the NOTW back in 2001/2 and I think the hacking activities could have extended to landlines as well as mobiles because if the newspaper was paying the police for information I'm quite sure they would have had people within BT and other phone companies on their payroll also
I'm actually so convinced of this I have written to the Metropolitan Police urging them to widen the enquiry further
It's interesting that Ford has now withdrawn its advertising from the NOTW but inexplicably continues to advertise in the Sun and other News International Group publications which to my mind rather defeats the object of the exercise
People need to express their disgust by boycotting all News International outlets including The Sun and The Times and Sunday Times and they should also consider cancelling their Sky subscriptions - I know I certainly am right now _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Do you remember the phrase Ann Widdecombe's used about Michael Howard.......'he has something of the night about him'.......I have the same feeling when I look and read about Rebekah Brooks
She knew what was going on at the News of the World....she was in charge..She needs to go _________________ I like hedgehog crisps |

I remember her using that phrase well Hedgehog!
Does she really think we are all as green behind the ears to believe she didn't know what was going on? It happened on her watch and she should go.

I would urge everyone on here who wishes to stop the Government giving Murdoch an even larger slice of the British media to sign the protest before Friday of this week
Go to Avaaz.org and click on the link about Murdoch and you can sign the petition by entering your name and postcode and e mail address
Once you have done this it is easy to unsubscribe to their future mailings if you prefer not to receive them
DO IT NOW _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

One thing I don't quite get is how they could go in front of a select committee (2003?) and admit that they have paid the police for information and nothing appears to have happened about it |

Nod - I think that is explained by what I would call 'The Blair Effect'
Lots of irregularities went on in Britain at that time unchallenged quite simply because of the likes of Blair and Mandleson cosying up to the corrupt Murdoch press and remember the tabloids were not beyond threats to dig up dirt on anyone including MP's who tried to do anything about it
Unfortunately at the time most of the public were too stupid to see what was going on and it was only after Blair left office the lies about the Iraq war surfaced that most people finally began to realise what a corrupt Government we had at that time _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Just for interest I switched on Sky News on Freeview last night ( do not subscribe to Sky & never will) and whilst they covered the story it was a PR exercise for Rebekah Brookes showing pictures of her at a "Heroes" event with the 2 Princes. Seems to me that murdoch should not be let anywhere near a newspaper or a news channel. Let him stick to films, sport and reality dross. |

That's an interesting point you raise Graham because I get very annoyed that in order to subscribe to Sky Sports you have to take out one or more of the standard Sky packages most of the programmes on which I hardly ever watch
I think that people should be able to subscribe to Sky Sports or Movies without having to take their other channels but in the light of recent events I'm reconsidering the whole thing anyway
I never watch Sky News and never will _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Breaking news! No links yet.
News of the World has announced it will cease publication after this weekend's edition
Cynics are saying this will aid the Sky takeover
And then, the a week later ....... The Sunday Sun ! _________________ -

They could never do that John as there already is a Sunday Sun published in Newcastle, nothing to do with Murdoch I'll add.
I think it would have been better to say it's closed right now. How many will go out and buy it because it's the last ever edition?
It won't be the end of the story though.

Actually I'm not sure if the Sunday Sun is still published on Tyneside..........
People will just have to boycott whatever Murdoch puts out in place of NOTW.

It's just been mentioned on Channel 4 News that apparently someone registered the title 'The Sun On Sunday' about three days ago
All right thinking people should be boycotting The Sun now and if they do I doubt any Sunday edition would be very successful
After all News International is the problem here whichever title they may masquerade under _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I can say that i have never bought the sun after the hillsbourgh disaster.
I have no friends or loved ones lost in the tragedy but what the sun did was disgusting.Im not sure but are there some shops on mersyside still not selling the sun? _________________ I found out how you can hurt an insect. It's the bees knees |

As you may know I'm a Liverpool fan and I can tell you that hardly any of the small newsagents in Liverpool stock the Sun and even some of the Supermarkets never seem to sell it
People power can work and it's down to ordinary people that the decision to close the News of The Screws was made today as well as the attitude of the advertisers
I even know someone who is now boycotting Morrisons because they refused to withdraw their advertising from NOTW and I can quite understand why although I don't shop there anyway _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Closing the paper will not take the pressure of News International who have to repair what they have done to victims. Rebukah Brookes needs to go as those journalists who wern't involved are about to lose there jobs.
Murdoch can't buy himself out of this and the Government should put a block on the bskyb takeover.
Apparently Andy Coulson former News Editor of the NOTW will be arrested on Friday ( 8 / 7 /11 ) |

How do you know that none of the current staff of journalists were involved Mark?
I only have knowledge of the situation back in 2002 but if these corrupt practices were rife then what makes you think that the newspaper suddenly saw the light and changed its policy?
I'm glad to see the back of this corrupt gutter publication and why on earth should anyone have the least bit of sympathy for redundant journalists when they have ruined so many peoples lives and then walked away leaving the unfortunate individuals to pick up the pieces as best they can
As I've said before about tabloid journalists the only good journalist is a dead journalist _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Whilst Andy Coulson was getting griddled over the phone hacking which could relate to payments to some police officers. ( He was released on police bail until October ).
Rebekah Brooks spoke to her News of the world collegues again, and said more revelations are to come. She also will make a quick decision over the seven - day Sun. People will know in years to come why we shut the NOTW. Oh dear me it won't go away... |

Can they release Coulson on police bail for that long as Parliament has not yet passed the bail legislation. Haven't they just got 96 hours? |

I think you are right Graham - unless of course they have had some guarantee that the legislation will become law in the next four days
Seems a bit odd though as they are effectively using up half the time over the weekend when Parliament does not sit _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

If it becomes law by Tuesday lunchtime they might just be within the 96 hour period but of course the bill will still need the Royal Assent
However do bear in mind that this legislation can be made retrospective - that's unusual in our Parliamentary system but has happened before in emergency situations _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
