In today's daily mirror there is a piece on steve and him being overweight and lonley. It isn't too ott but i still find it sad that they imply that because he sees his mum a couple of times a week and that his only visitor seems to be his son and the fact he seems to live on take aways makes him a weirdo.

It says he is a big radio buff....well so what?
I'm not keen on him as a presenter but fair play he has been on the radio for a long time so people must like him.

I just don't see the point of the story

Aren't we in the 'silly season'; a quiet news period? I'd say that 's why papers run 'stories' like that. I thought Steve Wright was married to an American, at least he was.

That's British tabloid journalism for you........... The problem is that people buy it.

The article states they have split.

I agree with the opening post, I cannot see the point of the article. I find nasty and judgmental.
So he likes his food and carries a bit of extra weight, likes the radio and visits his family, is a bit shy and quiet.
This all sounds perfectly normal to me Confused

It just illustrates what I have been saying about our gutter press here for many months

Colin is correct however - if people did not buy this c--p then the editors might finally get the message Sad

I think the Mirror is going to be up for very close scrutiny in the near future just like Murdoch's rag bag of propaganda publications but the problem is that even if heads roll as a result the same old methods will carry on under the guidance of a new set of equally corrupt people Mad

A pointless "story"

Jeremy Vine has tweeted this:
"By the way, story about my pal Steve Wright in today's #Mirror is hatchet job on a very kind & considerate colleague, who is a radio ledge!"

Author Emma Kennedy said
"What an utterly pointless attack on Steve Wright by the Mirror today "he insists on a baked potato" for lunch. Yeah. What a bastard. So basically, he likes baked potatos and he visits his mum regularly. That's it. Wow. What a fricking scoop"

Dara O'Briain says:
"The big news: He demands his food at 1.30 each day! Would that because he's on a live radio show at 2, d'ya think? Arseholes."

Sorry for quoting from Twitter, but it does seem to have become quickly famous as an utterly stupid story.

Ruddles, there HAS been something about the Mirror on BBC Breakfast -allegedly Heather Mills had her phone hacked and Piers Morgan has been asked about it.

TV's Emma Kennedy was right to complain about this non-story.

What people like Murdoch hadn't quite come to terms with is the fact that the traditional print-based tabloids now have very real competition from what I would call "people media" in the form of Twitter, Facebook and a million-and-one blogs.

Whilst The Guardian and The Independent broke (very bravely) the whole News International / News of The World scam, it was users of social media that helped to bring the wall down.

Newspaper proprietors have this to face from now on.

Don't be. As an alternative means of expression, communication and "people reporting", Twitter has established itself as a fabulous portal for de-bunking myths and for countering the crass reporting in the traditional media. More power to its elbow - and well done to those quoted above for their open condemnation of the so-called newspaper in question.

I'm no fan of his show (even if I was when he occupied the same time slot on Radio 1 - The era of 'Mr Angry' etc) I don't agree with Character assasinations like that. I can't imagine he's done anything to deserve it.
Somehow I can't imagine him being shy & quiet. Not remembering how he was on Radio 1 & the summer Roadshows of the time that he was part of. From what I've heard, he's not so much different now on Radio 2. However that 'story' was completely uncalled for. I notice that none of the comments posted underneath so far are in support of that article.

I don't see what he's done to deserve it either, I realise he's not everybody's cup of tea but really. Notice nobody has actually been quoted by name, it's all 'a friend' 'a colleague'
The article is just plain nasty but it's good to see all of the respondents to the article so far have criticised it.

The way i come across the story was BBC news channel was showing the front pages of the papers and lo and behold SW is on the cover! Agree with a lot of the comments above

The tabloids are just plain awful and as has been said Who buys them?
Leave the man alone!

He's an every day hard working bloke, lonely after a divorce, shuns the showbiz lifestyle and goes down to visit his old mum every weekend. Sounds like a good egg to me, I hope he finds some more happiness in his personal life. Has he got a book coming out due to the length of time being on the radio...

To be fair, that seems to have happened to Walker, Wogan, Bruce, Evans, Bates, Travis and more. Seems reasonable to assume Wright will be working on one.

Congratulations Mirror, you've just done something I didn't think possible. You've made me feel sorry for Steve Wright.

I guess most people will know that I an not Wright's biggest fan and would cheerfully put my own genitals in a rusty mincing machine rather than listen to "The Big Show" but this sort of pointless, mean-souled tabloidism shows the gutter press at its worst. After the NotW debacle you would think they might have learned the odd lesson or two. It appears however that the Mirror has left the bottom of the barrel and is busy exporing what's underneath.

In respect to Steve he's a fine broadcaster and kept himself to himself and his nose clean. The tabloids havn't reporting him falling out of pubs and beating up anyone. In someways he's a big star, but never makes it known he is.
