Honestly....what a pile of rubbish. That bizarre episode this morning when she hit every jingle button going after Popmaster just because it went into a tiebreak and was over in seconds.....how Norman must cringe if he listens to his wife making an @rse of herself.

There are soMMe people on here, mentioning no names, who think that she would make an ideal replacement for Ken, who, incidentally, is going nowhere soon so get that idea out of your heads...

On todays performance I wouldn't give her a job anywhere....utter rubbish and further dumbing down of Radio 2.

So why bother listening?

She is boring incompetent and lacking in the most basic musical knowledge and people should vote with their radio dials (to coin an old fashioned expression) and tune in to the many preferable alternatives available at that time of day

By continuing to listen you are simply boosting the Radio 2 audience figures and inadvertently making what you don't want to happen more likely to happen - if you can understand what I am saying

You are in danger of getting sucked in to what I call the Evans phenomena where many people tune in and don't like what's on offer but simply cannot be bothered to search out a better alternative

I much prefer to listen to Mark Goodier or Caroline or even Classic FM if I'm in the mood

Unless I'm filling in a RAJAR form I'm not boosting her figures. There isn't anything else to listen to as I don't like commercial radio (uk anyway). I sometimes have a US station on my internet radio but I'm not always anywhere near it.

Sorry Helen, I was actually responding to Angus's original posting but you got in there before me

I accept that you may not be filling in any form but by listening you are effectively accepting what is not even worthy to be called a second rate effort

If people don't like commercial radio ( and quite often I don't) there's always the option of the off switch and the CD Player or I Player instead Smile

I know but I like some sound and the time checks keep me motivated! I don't switch on until after Evans has been and gone.

Point taken Helen but when you think about it you walk round wearing a watch and there are clocks in virtually every car and probably in most rooms in the house and even on mobile phones and computers so is it really vital to have some radio presenter giving you time checks? - incidentally I don't think Ken Bruce does very much anyway and neither does Zoe Ball

It's very easy to get into the syndrome of simply listening to radio shows out of habit rather than because people really want to listen which I am sure explains why Chris Evans has such good audience figures Rolling Eyes

I agree. My wife will get in the car at 8.15 as she heads off for work and Radio 2 will be on by default. She can't stand the cackle that comes out of Evans' gob but she can't be bothered to hit the button to another channel for her short journey because it means that she than has to switch it back later in the day. So - is she a "listener" or not?

Glad I'm not the only one who can't stand ZB. I haven't heard any Radio 2 at all this week, and won't until Sunday. If Ken is off next week, that will be the same. Hopefully, ZB's ineptitude will make people realise how good Ken is!

Well they aren't quite as good as they were as he has just lost half a million of them in the last quarter..............Is the wheel finally starting to fall off the wagon?

We can but hope Helen - wouldn't it be nice to have a decent show on R2 at breakfast? Rolling Eyes

I'm pleased to see that Radio 4 has been picking up more listeners of late. It's hardly surprising, of course, when one considers the decreasing standard of broadcasting on offer at Radio 2.

I find the "Today" programme much more entertaining and enlightening than the appalling fodder to be heard on R2 at breakfast time.

Another farcical performance today. I really do hope Bob Shennan will have second thoughts about who he hires to stand in for Ken in the future.

When the contestant finally got back to do his 3 in 10 he was quite gracious by saying that he wasn't aware of the rules either but as he had been on before I'm sure he was....and then to compound it all we get another development when Zoe awarded him a CD wallet when it should have been an MP3 player.

And seeing as this thread has turned into another CE basher I'll just add this:

Was interesting to hear that after CE's petition to get more followers for JV on Twitter this morning he actually gained 25,000 - or so he said.

Isn't it amazing how influential Chris can be? Very Happy

Err, no. All it means is that of the alleged millions of listeners he has, only 25,000 are actually listening to him and I would imagine a lot of them are the same sycophants that post on his dreadful daily blog.

I find that a highly dubious claim that 25,000 additional followers of JV resulted from his mentioning it on-air. I bet there aren't even that many Twitter members listening to CE across the whole week!

No, it's true - you could see JV's followers leap up while Evans plugged away.

Still having finger trouble. At least her rajar figures are a boost for Radio2. Thats her Saturday Morning shows, oh when she's there instead of Lynn Parsons.

Absolutely dire is about all I can say about Zoe Ball. She has worked in radio for years yet still cannot grasp the desk. If she needs a producer to step in still then she isn't suitable. After last weeks fiasco she should have been in all weekend with a producer/engineer going over the controls until she got it, if not, then you get someone else. She just announced that Amy Macdonald's new one was 'Poison Prince'. That track is 4 years old, from the album 'This is the life'!!!

Whitering on, not stopping for breath, and the endless references to her family and her personal habits are not what I want to hear.

It's like letting a 9 year old drive the family car and hoping for the best.

I just turned back to it for 2 minutes.......and I catch her saying she loves seeing the old lady from Steve Wright's show!!!

It's the Old Woman. For the love of God. 2 minutes and I'm catching another cock-up.

I felt sorry for the popmaster contestant today whose conversation with Zoe was perpetually interrupted by loud blasts of trailers, Ms Ball continually pressing the wrong buttons.

That said, the music played today was very good. I wonder if the dreadful producer Gary Bones is on holiday? There was none of the usual cheesy 80s ballads and 70s gay pop disco. If he is away let's hope it's for a very long time.

You can see why SMs (Studio Managers) are still employed at R2, whereas few other BBC radio operations now use them; with presenters like Zoe Ball there would be no show without one!

I stand by what I've always said:
If you can't drive the desk, you don't get a show.

I just think it's an incredible display of unprofessionalism if you can't do it.

I think I heard Zoe say Gary was off decorating last week, didn't hear much of today's show so don't know if he's back or not.

Well I'm glad a few more people on here hold the same opinions as I do.

I'm actually starting to find her quite funny in a sort of unsympathetic way.

Apart from the latest Popmaster debacle she also managed to announce the Album of The Week then go on to say that she had never heard of the artist......better just to say nothing Zoe.

In the past I've managed to tolerate her inadequacies but this last week and a day she has soared to new levels.....maybe she should concentrate more on her family life which she seems obsessed with and have a break from being a presenter for a few years.

Please.

Does that mean that Brian Mathew (among others) don't get to present a show then? Why is the ability to "drive a desk" a pre-requisite for presenting a radio show and more than a TV news presenter being required to operate a Thomson multi-channel, multi-input, live-to-air vision mixer?

Colin- for the simple reason it isn't that difficult and aids the "no dead air" rule. The presenter knows when he/she is going to finish speaking and can push the next track/trailer/jingle button etc at the appropriate time.
And as you know, TV and Radio presentation are two entirely different animals, so watching a TV News bod running a vision mixer (regardless of make) wouldn't be particularly stimulating viewing.

Yes, but you're missing the point. You're implying that a presenter shouldn't be given a show unless he/she can drive a desk. It still doesn't answer the question about whether Brian Mathew should be allowed to continue broadcasting, given that he simply sits in a voice-only studio with the SM driving the desk in the control room.

PJ in Kent wrote:

I have news for you - certain in-vision newsreaders on some TV channels actually do select the sources using an "audio-follow-vision" mixer which in turn triggers a playout server containing the source material. I worked at a TV station between 1977 and 1979 where we trialed this technique (although using tape, not servers, obviously).

So, should it be a prerequisite skill for in-vision newsreaders in this modern budget-conscious era in broadcasting?

Surely, the issue with Zoe Ball is that she's a crap radio broadcaster. Period.

So I'm missing the point am I Colin? OK. I've expressed an opinion- if you want an argument about the finer points of radio presentation I'm really not interested, thanks.
It is my firm belief that a presenter (particulary the professionals) should at least display enough technical ability to run a show smoothly without having to rely on a producer/production assistant to "hold their hand".

And Yes, Zoe Ball is a crap radio presenter. Bookies will be taking odds soon on how often she mentions her kids/hubby/family life.... Rolling Eyes

Yes you are missing the point. My point is that I don't think that Brian Matthew has ever "flown the desk" himself, but it doesn't stop him being a good radio presenter. He just sits in front of a mic with a script and does it. So your assertion that "if the presenter can't fly the desk they shouldn't get the show" is actually irrelevant. What is more relevant is that the person should be a good, engaging, presenter - surely?

I never said that those who can't "drive" don't make good presenters- please get your facts right Colin... I'm just asking for a reasonably level of technical expertise. Rolling Eyes

Personally I think Zoe is much more suited to Dermot O' leary or Jo Whiley type show. It maybe a different person next time.

Stepping away from that. Zoe is having trouble running the desk, but then it was her choice to learn how to operate it.

On her recent stint covering Ken she made another boo boo on Popmaster...the winner got 39 points so the runner up shouldve had a go at 3 in 10.....this happened last time she was on along with another contestant naming 3 correct titles and being told he was wrong......doesnt anyone supervise her?....if not they should

One would expect there to be an impatient producer shouting the words "FFS you stupid cow" down her headphones! Obviously the producer didn't care.
