We saw it last Friday. I think it's superb and Colin Firth's Oscar nomination is richly deserved. It's very funny in places, thanks to a great screenplay, but the really good stuff comes from the tension you feel when the Duke of York (later the King) has to tackle his stammer head-on for the big "King's Speech" once he acceeds to the throne. I saw it in a full cinema (screen 10 at Cineworld, Milton Keynes) and the tension in the audience was palpable!

If, like me, you prefer films with depth and good characterisation rather than the usual Hollywood pap, then go and see it.

I loved it and so did my OH, who was only going to keep me happy. It's one of those proper British films and, as such, is really well made.

Colin Firth (who I've always had a hankering for) plays his part superbly, as does Geoffrey Rush. I read an article in the Mail (I know, I know) about the making of it and some of the scenes come straight from Logue's diaries.

Well worth going to see IMO.

I've just come home after seeing it. What a terrific film and cast. Colin Firth's performance deserves an Oscar. I felt quite tearful during his wartime speech.

King George VI has always been rather a hero of mine. I was ten when he died and still remember being out shopping with my mother and how every person we met was so dreadfully upset.

I'm glad HM saw it and gave it her blessing. It showed how fond of each other her parents were and what a support the then Duchess of York was to Bertie.

Saw this last week and it's a touching story of an unlikely, lasting, friendship between a king and a commoner as much as anything else.....
and as much as I enjoyed Colin Firth's performance in it I equally enjoyed Geoffrey Rush's performance as Lionel Logue...

What an appalling childhood he had with a brute of a father, a seemingly cold and indifferent mother and a brother who mocked him...it's a wonder he came through it at all in one piece never mind going on to be a dearly beloved King....

I would love to think that the King really said to Logue " I don't know how to thank you for what you have done" and that Logue's reply was " knighthood??"..... Very Happy

A glorious piece of music accompanies the actual speech.....

It's the same piece of music that Charlie Brooker uses on Newswipe!

Bertie's brother was a useless streak of whitewash who was all 'Wallis this, Wallis that' with him. I was gobsmacked when I saw it was Eve Best (Dr. O'Hara in 'Nurse Jackie') as Wallis!

Did anyone else think of Andy Parsons saying 'Two world wars and one world cup....doo dah, doo dah' (on Mock The Week) when Logue told Bertie to sing what he had to say to the tune of 'Camptown Races'?

I was also amazed to see Ramona Marquez (Karen in 'Outnumbered') in the role of a very young Princess Margaret.
