Does anyone anything about the Irishman who is taking over from GN for the summer? I'm surprised there isn't anyone already employed by the BBC or at least already working for them who could have done the job e.g. Richard Allison, Stuart Maconie, Mark Radcliffe.

I don't know since I gave up on Norton long since but I think that Patrick Keilty did the show before Norton. Totally agree with you about Allinson and Maconie but I suppose they are a bit too professional for R2 these days

Patrick Kielty did it for a few weeks last year so maybe it's him again? I didn't listen to Graham this morning.

I know he wasn't popular with most on here but on the days we heard him during a long car journey we laughed a lot. I think his heart's in the right place.

Ignore the above!

Just checked the schedule and it's Ryan Tubridy of whom I've never heard.

From wikipedia.... "Tubridy started in broadcasting at the age of 12,"

So he's been around a while ! but I hadn't heard of him either.

I've heard of him, mainly in connection to Gerry Ryan. And if he's half as good as Ryan he'll be very good indeed.

In a nutshell......

Tubridy presented The Full Irish, a breakfast radio show on RTÉ 2fm, which at its end was the second most popular radio programme in Ireland. For five seasons from 2004 until 2009, he presented the Saturday night chat show Tubridy Tonight on RTÉ One. He later left RTÉ 2fm for a number of years to present The Tubridy Show on weekday morning radio show on RTÉ Radio 1, but returned to RTÉ 2fm in 2010 to present a morning radio show from 09:00 to 11:00, following the termination of The Gerry Ryan Show with the presenter's sudden death. He has also hosted the Rose of Tralee contest on two occasions.

RTE 2FM would be the Irish equivalent of BBC Radio 1 and RTE1 would be closer to Radio 2.

Ryan is also the current host of RTE Television's Late Late Show and his 3rd season as presenter starts in September.

The Late Late Show is the world's longest-running chat show by the same broadcaster and the official flagship television programme of Irish broadcasting company RTÉ. The show is broadcast live for over two hours in front of a studio audience at 21.30 on Friday nights between September and May. It is regarded as an Irish television institution, even outside the country, and is considered "Ireland's chat show".

The show, originally conceived as a temporary summer filler programme for a niche audience on Saturday nights at 23:30, began broadcasting on Friday nights in 1962 and was presented by Gay Byrne for over 35 years, on Saturday evenings for some of that time. For most of its early years, the show was broadcast live from Studio 1 at RTÉ in Dublin. The studio was small and could only accommodate an audience of around 100. Gay Byrne talked about this on a 2008 RTÉ programme called "Gaybo Laughs Back", which showed classic comedy moments from his tenure as host of the show.

The Late Late Show was first broadcast on Friday, 5 July 1962 at 23:20. Since then its format has remained largely the same, with music, chat, comedy and audience involvement in debates on topical issues. The show's rapid rise to popularity led it to top the ratings consistently on RTÉ for forty years. Some sociologists[vague] have credited it with influencing Irish attitudes towards many issues, and directing social change in Ireland to construct current Irish societal norms. It has outlasted rivals such as TV3's The Dunphy Show, averaging 650,000 viewers per episode and is consistently RTÉ's highest rated programme.

Caught Ryan's show today for the first time whilst on a long car journey and I've got to say I enjoyed it. The music I thought was very good and the Paul Nicholas interview was interesting. I heard snippets last week but not enough to say much about it.

He seems to be playing a Beatles album track a week and I did hear last week's, track from A Hard Days Night, And I Love Her. It was to be 'If I Fell' but Brian Matthew had just played it on SOTS so changed it. This week, his 4th, was from Beatles For Sale. As he said it I thought I hope it's "I'll Follow The Sun" which it was! For his fifth week I'm guessing it will be something from Help their 5th album for his equivalent week.

A good stand in for a change!

It was Ryan Tubridy's last show today and I've got to say I've really enjoyed him and the music he's played.

His producer for the last 2 weeks was Alan Boyd who is Wogan's producer, or was, so maybe they were his choices. They were good though!

Alan Boyd also produces David Jacobs' show.

Yes I know, I spoke to him about it when I met him at R2. He's a nice guy.

Bob Shennan employed the wrong person to take over from Ross. Shame Ryan has finished his stint.

Since Graham has returned the show has sounded dire. He's been in New York for a few weeks and that has sounded awlful.
