It would appear that under Mr Shennan things are going from the sublime to the ridiculous Mad

These two are not to bad. Thankfully it's not Graham Norton covering both him and Steve Wright when he's off. Chris Tarrant has been a breath of fresh air this week.

Or there again perhaps you were right the first time Sad

WHY

WHY?

She won something at recent Comedy Awards so she's a C E L E B and therefore qualifies to present any show on R2.

I reckon my mate Dave across the road is funnier, and would make a great R2 presenter.

Was talking recently about C E L E B S and I said to the Mrs that the C E L E B fixation, on TV anyway, started with the programme 'This Is Your Life'. Originally (I remember as far back as early 1960s) it was about RAF pilots, life-saving surgeons and long serving lollipop ladies, then they did a series on C E L E B S and the world was never the same again. Mad

The station is a celeb drivin station. They are employed for there talent, not the ablilty to drive a desk, or be proud what music they play. The same issue may arise when they sit in will listeners want them more than Chris Evans, just like the time Richard Allinson covered? Jon Holmes would be a good contender to take over from Moyles on Radio1.

*Richard Madeley sits in the week before. So it's actually 2 weeks he's off*.

We should keep this in perspective. Forget not that many presenters on the old BBC Light Programme were so-called "celebrity presenters" too. Nothing changes.

And wasn't Jimmy Young a "celebrity presenter" at the beginning of Radio One?

I think the problem is that these recent Celebs aren't exactly in the age remit for R2.

Shennan seems to think that R2's core audience is 5 to 35 years olds so perhaps that's the logic. You only need listen (if you can bear it) to 10 minutes of Chris Evans' appalling breakfast show to hear evidence of that. Definitely radio for hard-of-thinking.

I think your true Colin regarding the older listeners be driven away to bring in the younger listener from Radio 1 and Commercial Radio. With the BBC funded in a way they can do this, but the station needs to keep the core of programmes to keep there old listener. This will not change in the long run, and continue to be heavly populated by celebs whilst some of the main broadcasters are taking time off. Some celebs are OK - IE Chris Tarrant, because he's well known in Radio. If these questions were put to Shennan and Co the response would be - 'It's about Talent.

I heard the first hour of justin before catching the train into London to see the legend that is Brian Wilson perform and I thought he was quite good. It's nice to listen to a bloke who's really passionate about his music - in Justin's case Classic Rock.

I'd rather listen to him (with his excellent knowledge of the genre) than some babbling fool of a "professional DJ" who doesn't give a hoot about music (Chris Evans comes to mind) any day.

Justin also comes from Devon, which makes him OK in my book.

Colin, I agree with you

I listened to Justin and it was such a pleasure to have a decent show to listen to after POTP

The music played was really good backed up by some interesting and informative comments in a style which did not result in his personality dominating at the expense of the quality of the music

I loved the anecdote about Saxon during the interview with the Chilli Peppers because I could really relate to that- when I was running my independent record label in the early 90's we had a band on tour supporting Saxon and I recall on one occasion my former wife was standing close to the front of the stage during Saxon's set and the bass guitarist got a bit over excited and accidentally kicked her in the face

I guess this is the nearest thing Radio 2 has come to a 'Rock Show' which I have wanted to see for several years and I really hope Justin gets more slots on the network

Just one thing Colin - I always thought he came from Bristol as he certainly has a Bristol accent similar to people like Ian Holloway
Which part of Devon does he originate from?

You're right. It's Bristol. Nothing like any of the main Devon accents! (You can tell because the West Devon, where I come from, pronunciation of "I'll" would be "oll" whereas in Bristolian it's "oil").

Anyway, as you say, it's good to hear somebody genuinely interested in - and informative about - the music they play.

PS: Justin absolutely LOVES Saxon, doesn't he!

I like Miranda Hart as a comedian but I'm not sure about her covering CE for a week. But let's give her a chance first and assess afterwards.

Another celeb/comedian dumbing it down, although it's pretty dumbed down already - "Top tenuous links to grass" - "Top tenuous links to bridges" - "What do you not want someone to forget" - Christ, it's like kindergarten radio. I loved CE on Drivetime, but on breakfast he sucks, or maybe what he's being asked to do sucks. If you have to get the public to text in links to tenuous subjects like grass, bridges, rivers, park benches, then you are about as low as it's going to get.

Shennan needs to get a grip, or maybe I'm just out of touch - maybe this is what the X-factor, Katie Price TV and Big Brother loving public now want. Crash radio.

It's not just you who is out of touch, an awful lot of the rest of us are. I don't think I'd like to be in touch if that kind of thing is what you want to listen to!

You have hit the nail on the head here.

Many of the demogrphic who regularly post on here are looking for adult type radio entertainment that the likes of Bob Harris, Johnnie Walker, Richard Allinson, Huey Morgan and a few others provide.

Sddly these guys are in the minority within the schedules-hence why I guess so many of us choose to listen to other radio stations.

The dumbing down of Radio 2 is unbelievable really-I wonder what the schedules will look like in 1 year , 2 year, 3 years time etc. I find it all quite sad really.

I wouldn't be surprised Evans picks his cover, but it's down to the controller. Recent years the station has tried out many presenters in each slots, but it seems some havn't risen to what the controller wants. I'm glad some slots like Steve Wrights have found a good presenter to cover. Some still need a tweaking or two, but I'm sure the list of celebrities names who want to take part in Radio 2 challenge will continue coming through Shennans revolving door.

I made my feelings clear about this on Digital Spy and was critical of both the BBC and the ginger one only to have my posts removed without any explanation, has it happened to anyone else?

Perhaps the owners/editors of Digital Spy have a deal going with BBC PR in return for "leaks"?

Or maybe Peta has new job.

I expect she had to do something while the actress who portrays Stevie in the TV series is in Waterloo Road!

I hope she won't foist the godawful Heather Small 'What Have You Done Today To Make You Feel Proud' on breakfast audiences.

Jon Holmes would have been ok on his own. Some are better suited to the TV than Radio, why Radio 2 always seem to think otherwise. They must have been there to make Chris Evans sound good! How the mighty Radio 2 has fallen in some parts.

I had the misfortune to catch some off this pair performing before I could reach the off switch. I couldn't agree more and I just wish that Shennan would go! Radio 2 is at an all time low.

Haven't been in for a while. Interesting to see that the dicussions don't really change Smile

I'd have though that most would have accepted now that Chris Evans has more than demonstrated that he is good at what he does, given that his audience share is still massive - indicating that more people are listening that have stopped listening.

On the topic at hand, I rather like Jon and Miranda. Jon's 6 music show is excellent also - more natural for him as a top satirist and comic. Many people seem to miss that he is also an award winning broadcaster with over 10 years experience. Obviously Miranda isn't but he clearly enjoys working with her. I wonder if some people have missed the point that Miranda is being deliberately inept and clumsy as this is the method of her self-deprecating brand of comedy.

Incidentally if anyone is a fan of pun based comedy like Round the Horne / ISIRTA etc, Jon has just put together a new show that sadly I can't remember the name of. It's well worth a listen. I'll post the name of it later.

Helloooooooooooooo, first time back for a while too.
Have to say I'm not impressed with Miranda and John's show.
I really like Miranda's TV show but just find the radio show quite boring and messy, in contrast to Richard Madeley who I thought did a really great job covering for Chris.
Regarding Jon Holmes, I'll be honest and say I've never heard of him.
Not keen on him at the moment though, seems like he can't just talk naturally and just constantly tries to make everything he says funny.
I've always found people who go out of their way to try and be funny very seldom actually are.

I don't dispute that Chris Evans is good at what he does but unfortunately that seems to be irritating the hell out of most of us and certainly not presenting a decent breakfast show - he shouldn't be let loose near any music show quite simply because his musical knowledge is absolutely abysmal as he himself admits

My opinion will not change and I imagine it's the same for many others here Sad

The only reason Chris Evans still has a job at Radio 2 is because Bob Shennan refuses to bow down to popular opinion and sack him.

I've met very few people outside of this forum - and there are only a handful here - who actually admit that he is is right for Radio 2.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with Chris Evans - it's just that he should be on another station.

I really don't understand why Bob Shennan can't let the loyal Radio 2 listeners grow old and die with a station that we used to enjoy instead of bringinging in shouty idiots and celeb presenters in a faithless pursuit of listening figures.

Honestly....who cares how many people listen as long as those who do aren't launching their radios through the window in desperation for something more adult?
