Jane Garvey addressing the Radio Festival at Salford calls for more women on daytime Radio 2. Ok but then she uses Feltz & Ball as examples. Give Janice a chance but not those two please.

I entirely agree but there are some good female presenters around - it's just that Bob Shennan hasn't the slightest clue about the competency of presenters whether female or not Mad

Janice is very good but we all know she would never get a daytime slot. I did try Feltz but i now see that as time wasted that i will never get back.Would love to have women on daytime R2 but the question is who?
Lauren Leverne on BBC6 is good but can't see her on 2

Lynn Parsons should be given a permanent slot on Radio 2 in my view

I know she has a young child but I'm sure if she was given a regular weekend slot with the promise of a regular daytime show perhaps when her son gets a bit older I'm sure she would be a great asset and certainly a lot better than Ms Ball or Ms Feltz Sad

Jo Goode is also quite good in my opinion and worthy of further consideration

Janice Long definitely deserves a more sociable time slot. Having said that, I wonder what she would think about the constraints of the daytime playlist! And I agree about Lynn Parsons. I also agree with the comments re. Lauren Laverne & Jo Good, I have heard them both on 6 Music. Another female presenter from days gone by that I occasionally heard on R2 was Sybil Ruscoe and I thought she was very good. She certainly didn't deserve to be dropped and I think she should be given a regular slot on either 6 music or R2.

I don't particularly like listening to female presenters, news readers apart. They mostly gabble on too much and in a lot of cases their voices are too high pitched for my liking (that's one of the reasons I hate Chris Evans).

So it doesn't bother me that there are so few on R2!

I enjoy Lyn Parsons too.
Definitely don't want any of the "Look how cool I am" type female presenters though, would much prefer somebody who loves loads of different music.
On a side note whatever happened to Nicki Bedi (I think) who used to stand in sometimes?

Does it matter if they are female or male, as long as they are good ? Rolling Eyes

I'd say no it doesn't matter.

If I don't like the sound of their voices, to me they aren't any good. Not sure if that's the right way to look at it though...............

I don't know of a better way to lool at it Helen. Nowt to do with gender. I can't stand Steve Wright's voice. I don't mean the crud that he comes out with, he could read the complete works of Shakespeare but to me he'll still sound like a Dalek on helium

I think the same on that as well, sorry if it came out wrongly, but a lot of the females just gabble on which I also don't care for!

I'm sorry Helen and whilst I understand what you are saying I think that is rather a sexist comment

There are plenty of male presenters who gabble on about unimportant trivia already presenting regular shows on Radio 2 quite apart from Steve Wright including Chris Evans, Paul O'Grady,Alan Carr and Graham Norton just to mention a few examples

As has already been mentioned on here this issue has nothing to do with gender but more to do with competence which can be present or absent in either gender

Not to mention the agenda (secret or otherwise) that the controller (be it this one or a future one) is persuing.

Yes, Mr Shennan seems to have the knack of picking the worst from both genders if recent events are anything to go by Mad

Yes he does.

I suspect that he didn't listen to Radio 2 when it was worth listening to all day long ( as we used to do) and he probably didn't grow up listening to the pirates (like some of us did). Happy days! Smile

Maybe it is sexist but it doesn't change how I feel Ruddles.

Fair enough Helen, I would never dream of suggesting that anyone here should be bound by some kind of politically correct agenda as I don't like that kind of thing myself but I just don't understand the logic of your comments Confused

What is illogical?

I don't like to listen to high pitched voices, a lot of women have them and a lot gabble on like Zoe Ball does. That's the reason I don't like Evans or the way he shouts rather than talks most of the time.

What you have just said Helen exactly illustrates what I am trying to say

You don't like Zoe Ball and you don't like Chris Evans and I think we can agree on that

One of them is male and the other is female and they are both poor presenters being pushed by the clueless Bob Shennan

It's not just their voices which are the problem - it's their competency to front a prime time show on Radio 2

There are good presenters of both genders on the network such as Ken Bruce, Johnnie Walker, Lynn Parsons and Janice Long but they are not good simply because of their gender - they are good because of their ability

When I said it doesn't matter I was referring to nod's post

In my opinion it doesn't, but I happen to think there are few good female presenters, mainly because of their voices and the fact they gabble as in Zoe Ball's case.

Hope that has made it clear.
