...which seems to have passed you by (but then there are very few here who actually listen to it, are there?)

** Alex Lester is covering Bob Harris Country tonight. Bob is off with a bad back.

** David Jacobs has had a spell in hospital. No detail, but he is back at work.

** There is a Radio 2 Sounds of the Sixties CD compilation out, and it's rather good, having lots of rarities and less obvious tracks
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sounds-Sixties-Various-Artists/dp/B005MYWZFW/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1322134599&sr=1-1

** Ed Stewart is back with Junior Choice on Christmas Day

Thanks for that Ron

As a matter of fact I don't generally listen to Bob Harris Country or David Jacobs although I know many people on here do

As for the SOTS compilation it sounds excellent from what you say but I haven't seen any promotion for it and as far as I know it has certainly not been mentioned on Radio 2 which might explain why probably few people have heard about it

Anyway nice to hear from you and if you don't plan to post on here before have a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year

Bob has a bad back.. It will mean Wogan will be afterwards. Not much of different than normal years. There is a lot of prep to put Junior Choice together and I think the only Radio 2 show comes Live from Birmingham studios now?

The only common link I can fathom is that David Jacobs is produced by Alan Boyd, who, I think, is the 'Barrowlands Boyd' from the Wake Up To Wogan days.

In addition, Radio 2 Arts Show Poet In Residence, Murray Lachlan Young, performs a specially written Christmas poem, and leading expert in body language, social behaviour and communication skills, Judi James, tries to unravel why we behave in the way we do at Christmas time.

Plus, we hear from people all over the world about what they're looking forward to on Christmas Day, and how they celebrate.

Roger Royle

Herald in Christmas Day with Canon Roger Royle as he plays a selection of seasonal music and carols all served-up in his own inimitable style.

Leslie Morphy, Chief Executive of the charity Crisis, talks about the 40th anniversary of Crisis At Christmas, the annual event that helps relieve the loneliness often experienced by single homeless people at this time of year.

Once a Year Day

Michael Ball celebrates the career of the delightful Miss Doris Day, with contributions from some of her leading men and the woman herself, who chats to Michael from her Californian home.

Born Doris Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, Day started her career singing with dance bands. Paired with an array of leading men, including Clark Gable, Jack Lemmon and David Niven, Doris was voted Top Box Office Female Star for four straight years during the early 60s, and was among the Top 10 for 10 straight years with hit songs like Que Sera Sera and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps.

Earlier this year, Doris became the oldest artist to have a Top 10 album in the UK, with new material. Day's My Heart entered the charts at No. 9, 62 years after the 87-year-old's debut album was released in the US, with one of the songs playlisted on Radio 2.

Presenter/Michael Ball, Producer/Julie Newman
Junior Choice Christmas Special

Ed "Stewpot" Stewart returns to Radio 2 to present a two-hour live edition of the ever-popular Junior Choice, featuring listeners' requests and dedications, plus a few of Ed's favourites..

Judging by previous years, if you're a fan of Rolf Harris, Bernard Cribbins or Terry Scott, there's bound to be something to make you smile.

Junior Choice came back in 2007 and since then has returned each Christmas, receiving hundreds of requests from listeners every year. Ed says it's the quickest two hours of the year for him and adds that after the show, all he has to do is decide which motorway service station he will be eating his Christmas dinner at!

Presenter/Ed Stewart, Producer/Liz Wallis
In the Lounge with Justin Lee Collins

Justin Lee Collins’s love for big-haired 80s rock is well documented and he’s championing this genre every night on the West End stage. But relaxing at the other end of the musical spectrum is another JLC favourite, the rather more understated lounge.

But what exactly is lounge music? Is it the hotel lounge and piano bar soundtrack which emerged into the spotlight when The Rat Pack ruled Vegas. Or, did Sinatra swing too far, and should lounge be something altogether more relaxing? JLC tries to define “lounge”, with the help of James Pearson, Artistic Director at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Sitting at the piano, with James and special guests, he hears how a simple change of rhythm can transform a song.

The music selection is all-embracing, from Mel Tormé and Dean Martin to Astrud Gilberto, Doris Day, and modern-day crooners like Richard Hawley. JLC shares some of his particular favourites.

Presenter/Justin Lee Collins, Producer/Anthony Cherry
French and Saunders

Comedians Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders bring the first of three seasonal specials with a Christmas Day show.

Guests in this short series will include, amongst others, Michael Palin, Tracey Emin and Clare Balding and her mum. Last year, Miranda Hart's mother told a story about how Miranda broke wind in front of the local vicar. What tales will Clare's mother have to entertain the nation?

Presenters/Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, Producer/Julia McKenzie
David Jason’s Comedy Christmas

David Jason's Comedy Christmas presents classic moments from an array of British Christmas television and radio programmes past and present.

Whether it's The Goon Show, Morecambe and Wise, Only Fools and Horses or The Royle Family, the Christmas edition of a hit comedy show has always been a hugely anticipated occasion.

As well as clips from the nation's favourites, the series will also feature new interviews with a host of stars, writers and executives involved in the commissioning and production of these comedy classics - including contributions from the likes of Bill Pertwee and Ronnie Corbett.

Presenter/David Jason, Producer/Phil Critchlow
Bob Harris Sunday

Bob Harris highlights the best country sessions and tracks from the year and welcomes Fleetwood Mac guitarist and lead singer Lindsey Buckingham live in session.

He talks about his new album and one of their famous meetings in Los Angeles for the Old Grey Whistle Test.

Presenter/Bob Harris, Producer/Mark Simpson for the BBC

A lot of the recordings on that album aren't the originals according to the tracklisting.

Can't see quite how you deduce that, H.

Anyway, I've just received my copy and given it a quick run through. You need a magnifying glass to read the full tracklisting detail and accompanying notes, but they do all appear to be the original recordings. Two or three of them bear more recent copyright dates, only due to digital remastering.

Easily, as the tracklisting on Amazon states they are more recent or as you say 'digitally remastered' recordings.

That isn't the same as an original recording IMHO.

No, I beg to differ.
They are the original recordings which have been digitally remastered to improve sound quality (in theory at least). I'm the first to complain when PS uses later re-recordings, but that is not the case here.

And three is hardly "a lot"

3 are enough, plus there are a couple of stereo versions and an album version which again are not the recordings that you would have known from the 60s.

Who's to say that the stereo or album versions weren't the originals?

Stereo was around well before the 60s, but you couldn't, or weren't supposed to, play stereo records on a mono player. Albums were issued in both formats - some were separate recordings, some were stereo merely mixed down for mono, and a few were mono subsequently enhanced to provide an artificial stereo sound on LP. Until the late 60s, 7-inch singles were all mono, and could have fallen into either of the first two categories.

Listening to the tracks on the CDs, I can honestly say that they all sound as though they are authentic 60s recordings, down to the background hiss and other occasional imperfections.

I just find it strange that they use an album version of a track that was issued as a single Ron.

A lot of my early LPs are in mono and the early stereo wasn't always very good. Just the other day I heard a stereo version of a track that I have on a mono LP and it really sounded quite strange.

I know what you mean, Helen.
The original stereo versions of the Beatles LPs, and the single Paperback Writer, sounded odd. Ditto the stereo versions of Frank Ifield's hits, some of which appear on the "Complete" set of his.

I'm not sure why Amazon has annotated some of the tracks in that way, because there is nothing in the booklet which says they are stereo or mono - in common with most compilations and back-catalogue issues, most of the tracks are in stereo anyway - mono ones, such as Billy Fury's, are the exception.

As regards the two tracks marked as album versions, the Diana Ross & The Supremes one is "the first single taken off their final album", and Swern maintains that the Earl Van Dyke track was never released as a single, despite what wiki and the Rare Record Guide says.

Sometimes when they play those tracks on the radio where stereo has been 'added' much later on, it sounds like you're only getting half the track coming out of your radio. That does sound odd!

Yes. I hasten to add, nothing on this collection sounds like that.

Overall I think it is an excellent set, and a great companion to the "Rockin' With The Pirates" from a couple of years ago.
