This album is still a classic, I've still got the vinyl copy from when I was a lad, great songs and narration by Richard Burton. David essex and Justin hayward at the top of their games.

What a brilliant piece of composition.

Y'know, i can't think of a poor song on the album.

Jeff Wayne, in the early ninetees did a musical version of Spartacus that had Catherine Zeta Jones and Anthony Hopkins.....not as good.

Why can't anyone do a faithful film version? Tripods on the landscape in the early 19th Century would look fantastic. Speaking of HG Wells, the last excuse for the Time machine film - very poor. Uber Morlock, my Ar*e!

The Americans wouldn't understand a true, faithful version. The story is about how the two mighty institutions of church and state are overwhelmed by what is in front of them.

The Gene Barry version was an attempt to show new American technology to the world, and the Cruise version was a bad road movie.

Wasn't there a limited release WotW done in the UK at the same time that Spielberg did his? I'm sure I saw a trailer for it on t'Internet. Set in Victorian times, vintage artillery pieces, hussars, the whole works (can't remember if Thunder Child was in it, though). Not sure if the CGI was up to much, though, and it seems to have sunk without trace....

Chersk,

it may have been the promo for the live stage show. I got the DVD of it the other week and it's got some CGI on a background screen, set in victorian times - it looks a great stage show, going to see it at the Arena in December - pretty pricey seats and a rip off on ticketmaster but still worth their weight in gold.

Hi Andy,

No, it wasn't - a quick look at IMDb came up with the following:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0449040/

I don't think it's had a DVD release.

Stupid name for a ship, though.... I could also never quite work out what a torpedo ram (in Wells' book - but pictured as an ironclad in Wayne's musical version) was going to be able to do against a Martian War Machine. Then again, I obviously take my SF far, far, far too seriously....!

Hey, Cheers Chersk - never heard of this. See, again though, they've gone for 'Herbert' creating a rabies syrum to destroy the aliens whreas good ol' mother earth's bacteria killed 'em in the original. I guess they thought that wasn't very exiting!
