I had to take a longer than usual journey this afternoon so heard more of the Steve Wright Show than I would normally. It's pretty poor when by far the best part of the show is "The Oldies" chosen by a listener isn't it? Well done Stella ? your choice of music was excellent.

I never listen to Steve Wright in the afternoon as I assume that I wouldn't like the music but I really enjoyed him hosting and choosing the music for the recent Friday Night is Music Night.

The 'Oldies' feature is certainly the best part of the show by a mile

I get fed up of him having far too many guests on there flogging their latest wares although it was good finally to hear the voice of Phil Swern today - the SOTS offering sounds really interesting and it was only about a week ago I was saying that there had been no publicity about it on Radio 2 so perhaps someone does read comments on this forum Smile

It was nice to hear his voice as I was beginning to think he was some kind of automaton from another galaxy Shocked

As well as SOTS &POTP, Phil Swern used to produce Bob Harris' weekend show. Here is an old webcam shot from the days when Bob's weekend show had the webcam on. I am reliably informed that the bloke in the red shirt is 'The super Swern' (as he was nicknamed by Bob) himself:

I too heard more than usual today, and the oldies were superb!

I like Steve's show and he is virtually the only daytime show that plays anything from the Sixties.
Also the powers that be have to ask themselves why you will never hear any of the oldies picked by the public being played by Radio 2 at any other time!!!
The person picking them likes them, I like them, the public always text and say they like them so why the hell won't they play them?

I like the music played on Steve Wright's Show, especially the oldies chosen by listeners, I just wish that he would play the whole track and stop singing over them though!

I thought the Friday Drivetime tracks were picked by the public. Rolling Eyes

It supposedly is. However, if I rang in and was lucky enough to get through, what chance would I have of hearing my requested tracks if those tracks were, say, 'Do Ya' by ELO or 'Overkill' by motorhead, as opposed to the usual fare of 'Mr Blue Sky' or 'Ace Of Spades'?

A really great track is 'Do Ya' - but I thought it was done by the Move rather than ELO although I might be wrong

I seem to recall it was the 'B' side of 'Tonight' a copy of which I used to have

Either way it's never played on Radio 2 or anywhere else and it really should be Sad

I'll put that date down in my diary Ruddles!!!
I meant why is it down to the public to pick some different records, Nod.
If you check all the non stop oldies for the past week virtually none of them will have been picked in ages by Radio 2 themselves.

I'd agree wioth you, they are very limited in their choices and have far too much playlist.

I don't get this love for the Oldies. If you listen to Steve often enough the same tracks come round again and again - he replaces people's suggestions with songs he prefers (or are more well-known).

And at least one of the songs in Steve's Oldies on the day that started this thread has been played by Chris Evans in the last fortnight.

The oldies on the day this thread was started were not the kind you normally hear 5 or 6 of in a row. Okay you may hear one, as you mentioned, on another show but to get them all straight after each other was a rarity and far from the norm for that show was why we commented.

I usually enjoy the oldies on the show, but I thought they were rubbish today! (Apparently the choice of George Michael.)

Steve Wright plays some damn good songs on his show, many from the 60s which you don't hear often, eg Rainbow Valley by Love Affair, and Bob Lind's Elusive Butterfly, both played recently.
It's certainly better than the drivel played by Ken Bruce for example.

And the worst example is the Friday request show on Simon Mayo when the great British public ask for the usual 80s crap such as Madness/Abba/Queen. Ghastly. The public should not be allowed to choose the music IMHO.

Yes he does, but I didn't think much of todays choices of non stop oldies which were George Michael's!

I don't think it is the public who choose some of the songs on the request shows. I think several, if not all, songs are already chosen by the producers and the public then make out that they are their choice.

I know it happened when I did the Children in Need dedication live on the JV show for the members on Jezza's Exiles as we'd pledged quite a bit of cash. I forget what the song was now but I was asked to say that was the one we wanted. As it happened we hadn't chosen one and I don't think anyone else who was grouped in with that track had either.

Being at home this afternoon waiting for the plumber I listened to Steve Wright for the first time in ages. The show was as bad as always except the oldies were a great change to the usual dross. Bernard Cribbins, Frank Ifield, Joe Brown, Duane Eddy & Ray Charles amonst them.

Couldn't agree more about the oldies on today's show Graham. I don't listen that often but these were superb.

Worth listening to again or making them part of a playlist.
