Bernard Matthews farm in Suffolk has found that over 1000 turkeys have died. The reason is defra has found that a form of H5N1 bird flu has been found at one of the companies sites.

Has DEFRA actually confirmed its H5N1? There are lots of different strains, all of which can be called "Avian Flu". _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Blimey! Cherskiy,
Your avatar pic has Cliff House ( taken from the breakwater) in Amble by the Sea, in the background. That must be the SAR jellycopter from RAF Boulmer.....
I used to play on those cliffs when I was young.
Oh yes the thread...... do they sneeze? |

Maybe his Turkeys would rather die from flu than being hit with baseball bats by some of his workers... for "fun"......
yes I'm bitter.
and, to make it worse, his farm of evil is only 30 miles from me!
But according to the government, we don't have to panic.
and,... we have Turkey on the menu tomorrow..... |

I was referring to the incident a few months back whereby some of his employees thought it would be fun to hurl live Turkeys in the air and wack them with a bat - like playing baseball.
Problem for them was it was caught on camera..

I was wondering whether you or Ian would recognise where it was!
The local coastguard have to close the northern breakwater when the SAR display is performed during the town's Lifeboat Day each year. The coastguard lads kindly take me and a colleague there and let us photograph the display from 'a different angle'. This year the helicopter crew invited us up on base afterwards so they could see the shots (and asked for copies, naturally).
And now, ladies and gentlemen, we return you to the thread.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

That is one of the reasons why I do not eat meat or poultry, not this specific incident, but the cruel way that factory farming treats these poor animals and how it tends to "inspire" these terrible acts of cruelty. I try and use local farms for the purchase of free range eggs, I do know which poultry is genuinely free range as I regularly visit poultry farms, and many other types of business, in my line of work. Like there are some pubs & restaurants that will only see me on business, I could never eat or socialize in them, others I will frequent with pleasure. _________________ Old Bikers Never Die, our leathers just get tighter! |

I almost laughed at the report that the carcasses had to be transported from Suffolk to Staffordshire to be incinerated. It obviously makes sense to cart infected dead birds halfway across the country to get rid of them.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

It is a laugh the sealed tanks are being moved 200 miles away after being gased at the Bernard Matthews farm. |

Apparently for every turkey which is killed Bernard Matthews foods will get £3 to £4 each, and Matthews has declined to come out of his Mansion to do any interviews. I suppose he gets a refund on the Turkeys and that will go towards his other £300 Million hes worth.
I wonder how he will be able to produce turkeys now? |

More cases of the potentially-dead H5N1 strain of bird flu have been found at the turkey farm in Suffolk where 160,000 birds were culled earlier this week.
Apparently tests on birds slaughtered in three other buildings near the original shed at a Bernard Matthews farm in Holton, Suffolk, last week showed strains of the virus.
The turkeys at the farm were housed in 22 sheds - Sky News understands that four of these were affected by H5N1.
It is also being suggested that avian flu may have arrived in the UK with poultry products imported from Hungary.
The results of the tests were confirmed to Sky News by Fred Landeg, deputy chief vet for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
Dr Lendeg said the Suffolk virus and that found in wild geese in Hungary last month may be identical.
A newspaper is claiming that a consignment of turkey meat arrived at the site shortly before the outbreak.
Defra scientists are checking food processing arrangements at a Bernard Matthews-owned plant in Hungary in an effort to trace the source of the deadly bug.
Bernard Matthews, which co-operating with the inquiry, has volunteered to cease trade movements between the UK and Hungary.
The investigation is including arrangements at a food processing plant next to the turkey farm where the birds were slaughtered.
Dr Landeg said: "Our investigations have shown that one possible route of infection is poultry product imported from Hungary.
"It is important that this is investigated thoroughly, along with all the other possible routes."
The Observer newspaper is to report claims that a consignment of dead turkeys travelled by lorry from the Hungarian plant and arrived in the UK a few days before 27 January.
That was the date when farm workers began to notice the first signs of illness in the turkey chicks at the Suffolk farm.
A spokesman for Bernard Matthews had told the paper that its two operations were connected only in terms of ownership.
"All our birds are British. The fact that we have a Hungarian operation is immaterial. It is very unlikely. It's a complete mystery to us. We have the highest biosafety standards of anyone.
"We are waiting for Defra to finish its investigations and they will tell us the likely cause." |

Thank you for that news update, Mark. Although I did see it on the telly as well.
