CT is fun. Loving the music & Battle of the oldies. The interviews are fun. I think he's found his feet covering Steve. It's going to be strange when he returns, as he's a different class. I'm guessing CT must his permanent standin?

The guy is doing my head in!

Why can't Mark Radcliffe be given a couple of weeks off and leave the presenting duties to Stuart Maconie over on 6Music, so we could have him back as a stand in? Anything even Dale Winton!

Tarrant is nothing other than a arrogant bore.

Hurry back Steve! (he says avoiding the oncoming brickbats!)

You're right, without doubt Steve is a much better broadcaster....

I too prefer Steve Wright to Chris Tarrant, even if Wright does talk too much over songs.
Quite why Tarrant, who must be well into his 60s by now, feels he has to emulate the excitable and manic Chris Evans is a mystery. I suppose because he is stuck in a 70s time warp he has to try to appear younger than he really is.
And I always suspect that anyone who is so obsessed with AC/DC and Led Zep in the afternoon must be lacking something in the, er, downstairs department.

Well, I guess I should retract my comment about Chris Tarrant's afternoon choices of music. Today he had the choice between two peoples' lists of oldies. One chap nominated the usual witless pieces of cheese that Radio 2 seems to love: ELO, Eagles (Hotel California), Queen and Fleetwood Mac (from Rumours). The usual drivel.
The lady chose Hey Joe by Hendrix, Come Together by The Beatles, Proud Mary by Ike and Tina Turner and two others. An excellent choice.

This being Radio 2, I felt sure they'd play the cheesy rubbish but to my surprise Tarrant chose the lady's choices. Excellent!

Fantastic news Monday 4th July US Independence day Chris Tarrant is covering Steve on yet another day off. Maybe a Holiday.

Tarrant has got it down now and I love it when he's in for Wright. The music is far superior and he isn't frightened to play an 8 minute track and actually buck the establishment. It's almost cheese free and the bloke has a personality and can have a pop at himself. You never hear that when Wright is on. Steve's format is 20 years old at best. It's stale. Tarrant can also talk to the public where as Steve makes it feel like it hurts him to have the ordinary people impinge on his little empire when the astrology is on of a Monday.

I'd have Tarrant over Wright any day.

I wonder when Steve was taking some time off as he seemed to have been on Radio 2 all of August. Chris is back covering week 12th September.

Chris has been a breath of fresh air covering for Wrighty this week. At least the station have found someone other than Norton and Winton covering for him from now on. They are lovely broadcasters, but were dull as dish water on the afternoon show.

Dreadful.....

Far too shouty. Far too much butting in before his guest has finished a sentence. Far too much innuendo with Sally.....and that sucking through the teeth.....

Far too much "OTT" rock music, patronising of Battle Of The Oldies wannabes, I could go on and on.

I'm sure they get CT in to make you realise that even though SW is cheesy, stuck in the 80's and well past his best before date that actually...he's not that bad after all.

Looking forward to Monday Very Happy

I tuned in on occasions and I guess Tarrant must have been better than the annoying Wright simply because I didn't switch off!

Tarrant was fantastic last week. The music, for a start was far better than the plastic pish Wright plays. Some proper rock music and he played some rarely heard tunes. It's all dependant on your sense of humour with regard the innuendo. Some folks think it is sexist and not amusing, some find it great fun and meant as a joke rather than anything threatening.

He isn't a BBC yes man either. He actually has a personality and doesn't care if he takes it close to the edge, relatively speaking. God, it's nice to hear someone with a bit about them. I really can't listen to Steve Wright any longer. I actually listened again to Radcliffe and Maconie last week and listened to Tarrant live.

Once in a while I'm happy to do that, although I'd have Tarrant every day over Wright. Thank the lord for non-conformity and a bit of character.

Yes, I agree. I find Wright almost as unlistenable as Evans these days.

I find Tarrant to be a bit aggressive at times and don't like the way he belittles listeners' choices.
Still, he did play the whole of Floyd's Us And Them last week, even though he cut off Guns 'n' Roses' Cold November Rain halfway through.

He read a listener request in which a guy asked if Chris could say "hi" to his lovely wife who was hard at work, and he replied "No. Do it yourself!" which made me laugh. It turned out that he was playing up to Sally Traffic and, bang on cue, she chastised him for it. A bit contrived, perhaps, but still quite funny.

Yes, he does sometimes sound like a cat on hot bricks, but I much prefer him to SW.

Colin: CT also made me laugh last week when, asked to play a request by a travel agent who'd sold him a holiday years ago, he said 'no, I've already done you a favour'.

Obviously we know what he's like, but hopefully some listeners don't take him too seriously, as most of it is just tongue and cheek.

The show seemed to be recorded on Monday as there wasn't any banter between him and Sally. Must be because of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire being live..

Switched off so wouldn't really know Mark and listened to Smooth Xmas. It's quite nice and no adverts!

I know most of us have heard Cilla Black's story before but I enjoyed listening to her the other night on Steve's show.
To me she comes across as pretty genuine and pleased to be where she is, where she came from, and thanks her fans over the years for putting her there..
Pity about Chris Tarrant babbling away and making out like he knew nothing about the sixties... he seemed amazed that people, including Cilla, sometimes had to receive previously arranged calls from Public Telephone Boxes!
I always get the feeling he's covering the show like he's doing us all a big favour... not for me he isn't.
and, as a final insult, he announces near the end of the show " I'm nearly done, and at 5 o'clock it's.. somebody else"
He annoys me..

He does me as well SF so I switched off almost at the start. Life's too short!

Re Cilla, I think people do forget that phones weren't the norm back then. We were in Liverpool between Christmas and New Year and came out a different way to usual and at one of the junctions was a sign 'Scotland Road'. I said to o/h 'Cilla Black came from there'! I always feel quite nostalgic for the 60s whenever we go there. I must have been fantastic to be a teenager in Liverpool at that time.

As I remember, in the 1960s, telephones in the home were still the exception rather than the rule, particularly in the first half of that decade. It was into the 1970s when we got our phone installed.
I'd have loved to have had my teenage years in the 1960s, but I'll have to settle for having the 1970s as my teenage years. It was still a good and eclectic decade. Much better IMO than the decades that followed!

We were lucky enough to have a telephone as my parents had a Hotel so it was a necessary luxury.. we had a four digit number back then and our black Bakalite phone had that twisty cotton wrapped cable and a little drawer which pulled out for note paper! Laughing
Of course another thing which would amaze Mr Tarrant is that we sometimes used to call our girl/boy friends from a call box to enjoy the privacy! we didn't want parents listening in after all!! Razz

My father told me when his father was alive told this boy off for pulling his coat in a butchers in Denham. The butcher said " Do you know who the boy is " He didn't care who it was just wish he wouldn't do that. Apparently it was Cilla son. Laughing

She wouldn't have been using a phone box from Denham Mark, that would have been when she still lived in Liverpool.

We too had a party line, around 1960, and can still remember the number, 37377, easy for a child!

I can remember every phone number for every address where I have lived since the 1960's

I don't know why but I used to get quite attached to some of them and they became almost like part of my own personal property

Even worse I have to confess that with some of the more recent ones I have even phoned the numbers to see whether they have been issued to anyone else as I wouldn't like the idea of someone else having them but it seems none of them have Shocked

I can also recall the registration number of every car my dad owned during my lifetime and those of every car I have owned - probably at least 40 in total - and even silly things like the registration of the old school bus I used to catch every day

People have joked with me that I ought to go on Mastermind with my specialist subject being The British Car Registration System Since 1945 - I don't know why but I seem to have a photographic memory for sequences of letters and numbers but yet I have a terrible memory for faces and I can meet someone this week and not even recognise them less than a month later Embarassed

I'm talking about before she was signed up Mark. She lived in Liverpool until she had her early hits Mark, I can remember hearing her being interviewed on TV or radio. She was still singing at the Cavern in the early 60s. Sorry but I was around then and remember it!

I can vouch for that Helen because my friend's big sister used to know Cilla in the very early days at the Cavern

The terraces around Scotland Road were demolished around the mid 60's but by then Cilla had moved on - to Denham it would seem Smile

I can recall the letters of most of the cars in my life but not the numbers for some reason...
We have four vehicles now and I can't remember the numbers on two of them! one of those I've owned for 13 years!!
One other was new and I picked "375" from a list as it reminded me of my old '62 Ford Consul 375 and the other is a personalised plate with "07" as that's the year of the car...

Santa - one of my party pieces is that if someone gives me their car registration I can tell them instantly and without reference to Wikipedia or anything else the vehicle licensing office where the vehicle was first registered

Not too difficult post 2001 - for example looking at your area anything beginning with say AP is Norwich or AY Ipswich

But on the pre 2001 system it is a whole lot more difficult but I can even go back pre 1974 before the DVLA was establised and tell you which local authority or County Council issued any given registration

As you know I attend a lot of classic car shows and have simply picked up the ability to do this over a few years

It did stand me in very good stead one night back in 1975 when I lived in Leicester and used to visit a female friend on most Saturday nights

She had suffered severe violence at the hands of her former husband and told me one day that she was worried that he might be looking for her

One Saturday night I went to her flat and saw a Leeds registered car outside which I did not recognise and as I knew he lived in Leeds I did the sensible thing and returned home

I found out next day that the person concerned had been arrested for attacking one of my friend's neighbours with a metal bar - it could easily have been me but for my knowledge of what some might see as unimportant details Smile

Lucky escape! sounds like a nice fella... Rolling Eyes

My first car, a 1938 Austin Big 7 was CNG closely follwed by a Triumph AEW then a Consul NBJ and a Zephyr BRT any ideas? Laughing

I think I'm right in saying Great Yarmouth used EX as it's registration numbers... we waited to see if SEX was used but it wasn't! Laughing

One of the best registrations I've seen was 5AAB on a Saab...
