I see there are some people live in Newcastle Upon Tyne who post on this forum. I used to live in Morpeth Nothumberland when I was a child. We moved up there when I was about 8 as my dad had work in Ashington working for Wansbeck district council. I havn't been back there for years.

My mum lives in Jesmond Newcastle. My dad and step mum live in Barnard Castle Co Durham now.

Mark,
Love you lots, but why this information?
Is this a sort of game?
O.K.
My Dad came from Norway, where most of his family still live, apart from the ones living in the US, Montana, had to be.
My Mum and the rest of that side of the family mainly live in South Africa.
I have 1 Great Uncle living in Derbyshire and a Great Aunt in Bognor.
Oh yeah, have a cousin living in Bali.
Carry on like this and I will tell you about the rest of them!

And yes, I know Morpeth - thinking about moving out that way, or further north-west into the sticks.

Has it changed? Well, High Stanners, down by the river, still floods. The Clock Tower is still there, but I can't remember if it still works! The stepping stones and the swans can still be seen, whilst a whole raft of new supermarkets were built to the east of the town centre, between Bridge Street, Newgate Street and Damside/Dark Lane, plus a new bus station. I still shop up there once a month, prefer it to trudging into Newcastle or the Metrocentre.

It's a while since I've been to Barney Castle, though.

You will have to wear your dark glasses to recognise that delightful young lady on her bike Cherskiy, don't knock her off her bike!

I'm very careful when overtaking cyclists - and horses. As for sunglasses, well, it's a bit early in the year for those just yet....

Julia, if you're cycling down Osborne Road anytime next week between 1540 and 1600 or so, don't be surprised if someone shouts 'hi!' at you! Smile

Mind you, if you're all rolled up in cold weather gear, I probably won't recognise you - can you cycle in a Scottish accent please? Laughing

that's probably too early for me - I usually cycle in the dark - mysterious eh? Wink
nope - no cold weather gear - you get WAY to hot on bikes... although I do embarrass my friends sometimes with the outrageous clothes I do wear when cycling! Laughing
Don't think I know Osborne Rd - not my route I don't think

Julia,

You must know Osborne Road, it's the main road through Jesmond, and longer than any other!

My husband and I(no, I'm not the queen) stayed in a hotel (without the children, abandoned at home with the in-laws) on there about 5 years ago, it was the first time I'd seen the big heaters outside bars! It was the end of March and we managed to go for a drink on a warm Saturday afternoon for the first time in 10 years. Sheer bliss!

I want to retire to Northumberland, instead of living in a wet windy place for the rest of my life!

Osborne Road can now easily be recognised by the couple of ex Army armoured personnel carriers one of the bar owners has parked outside his gaffe. They're used as mobile advertising hoardings and regularly rattle past my office on the way into the middle of town.... Shocked

The first time I saw one of his FV432s rumbling past outside, I went to the window and had a look, only to see it with a big advert for Smirnoff Ice plastered down one side. I wondered at the time whether the MoD was moving into advertising - you know, £5,000 for a FV432, £10,000 for a Challenger II, £15,000 for a Jaguar GR.3A and £25,000 for a Type 42 Batch 3 destroyer.... plus Trident submarines advertising tanning equipment! Smile

Hey, Mark

Jesmond is a bit different these dats - a few more bars to visit, seems to be the place to go. In respect of parking - no change there, still can't find a blinking space!

I had a girlfriend that lived there once and I had to park 3 streets away!

Lots more bars, IMHO - about ten years ago it used to be just a series of small hotels, until the first couple of wine bars were set up. It seemed to open the floodgates for a whole raft of bars and cafes although I believe the council have more or less blocked any further development now. Can't remember exactly when it became trendy to start off in Jesmond of a night before heading into town, but I recollect the 'alkies' in the office first banging on about the place in around 2000 or 2001. It pretty much seemed to take over from the Bigg Market for a while - people would start off in Jesmond before ending up down at the Quayside.

Jesmond has as far as I can remember been a mix of student digs and affluent householders - you only have to look along the streets to see a mix of Porsches, Chelsea Tractors and clapped out student runabouts.

I was in Tesco in Jesmond last September, and got stuck in the queue at the checkout behind what I thought was a family with no less than five trollies-worth of food. Turns out it was a first-year student, the parents helping to settle them in with - and I can still remember the figure today - £1758.34 - worth of groceries, paid on Daddy's credit card.... "We're just helping our daughter with a little food so she can concentrate on her studies", he helpfully explained to the incredulous cashier. They then loaded up all the stuff into his Porsche Cayenne Turbo illegally parked on the yellows outside....

From what I remember of the stuff going into the trollies, it was all pretty expensive stuff, mostly tinned items and frozen goods, so she must have had a big freezer, or a big appetite.... Rolling Eyes

Was up in Newcastle today!

We were at the Pets' Corner end of Jesmond Dene with our grandson on Saturday.

We lived in a flat at Jesmond for a short time in 1976/7 when we very first arrived round here and were looking for a house, which we eventually bought about 10 miles to the West. On the surface it hasn't changed much but Osborne Road has far more bars today and must get pretty noisy at the weekend.

I remember in those pre-Metro days getting the 33 into Town.

Ian.

It does - and did this afternoon when I drove along it on the way home, something to do with rag week (lots of cars with "Rag 2007" stickers), except the students were driving like idiots along the road, with their horns continuously blaring. Other road users were wondering what the hell was going on, and kept pulling over or stopping in the middle of the road, thinking a police car or ambulance was coming up behind them....

Seemed like only a matter of time before there was going to be an accident....

Yes, I noticed that the last time I was there. Apparently, some people live in Gateshead as well. Funny old world, innit.
