The publicity for the new programme had me thinking that Teddy Johnson was going to be on quite a few programmes but it would appear that a different DJ/Presenter is featured weekly...tonight being David Jacobs.

Despite being one of Radio 2's younger listeners, I think this looks like an interesting series. I was listening to Desmond's Friday programme on the iPlayer last night and he mentioned it.

Unfortunatley I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I can listen to this though, as I'm away in London tonight, (visiting the BBC 6 Music studios Wink ) and I've got to be up at 5am tomorrow!

Caught up with Desmond today and at the end of the programme he played a wonderfully stirring piece of music .. ...can't think I've heard it before... was called Finlandia On Great Lone Hills sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and was composed by Sibelius.

'Twas wonderful...

Here's a link for your Goldie Hawn song, John.

I especially enjoyed Walking in the Air by Aled & Aled. Very effective. I listened while gardening and watching great tit parents going in and out of the nesting box feeding their babes.

I'm convinced I know some early 1950s songs from when my mum always had the Light Programme on (before they got a TV) maybe even while I was in the womb!!

We were listening to last night's show over dinner, and Desmond played a couple of tracks by someone who I thought he called Joel David (also referring to Joel David and Maureen) who he connected to Coronation Street over a long period of time. I couldn't imagine who this could be and googled the name with no success.

Was anybody else listening who can help?

I heard the name Joel David but not the bit about Coronation Street. I was clearing up and in between rooms. So I'm sorry but I can't come up with anything either. Sad

I've checked the playlist and I've definitely got the name right. There were two songs, Old Bones and Fields of Gold. It's really bugging me now.

Enjoying the show tonight with a nautical theme. Always love to hear Charles Trenet and "La Mer" and before that I was very taken with "The Sailor with the Navy Blue Eyes" played delightfully by, surprisingly, Spike Jones and his City Slickers.

Now we've got Fred Astaire "We Joined the Navy". Can't get much better than this!

I joined the Navy to See the Sea always reminds me of my childhood friend who lived over the road from us. Her mum had a load of his 78s and would often have them on when I was there and this was one of them!

A good one tonight from Desmond. Anyone listening?

He mentioned that he played a doctor in a TV series which would have been Emergency Ward 10

Yes Helen I listened tonight and enjoyed it, especially that version of Body and Soul. I was in the garden scrubbing out hedgehog feeding dishes etc so Desmond was good company.

That's the kind of things I like Desmonds and those like his for, Melodies For You was always my 'washing up and clearing away' programme on a Sunday evening.

I'd never heard of the actor but did find references on the web to his work in Coronation Street but I still was none the wiser. Sad to hear the story Desmond mentioned when playing his song though...

I have to admit I preferred his show this week to last weeks with the Scottish(Scots?)theme...

It's a 60s special tonight.

Good to hear the Temperance 7, who I think featured in one of the Popmaster questions the other day. My Mum always said the lead singer was the spitting image of her cousin.

I enjoyed the show but I wish he didn't concentrate so much on the 'crooners', I'd have liked a bit of the more uptempo stuff mixed in with it. The track he played out with, 'What A Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong, was also what we had played at the end of my mother's funeral service back in May.

Well, Desmond has started his programme tonight with one of my favourite songs - I Can't Get Started. I love the versions by both the great trumpeters Bunny Berrigan and our very own Kenny Baker (whom I saw a number of times at jazz gigs), but this one was without the words by Tutti Camarata. Still enjoyable though.

A wonderful edition of the show last night with some very moving songs in keeping with the time of year.

I have never heard of Arthur Tracy the 'Street Singer' so looked him up only to find, to my surprise, that he was American!...sounded very English to my ears.

Just one gripe.....I would have preferred to hear John and the lads sing 'In My Life'

Yes Becky I agree that it was a lovely selection. I had heard of Arthur Tracy and I even have a 78 of him in my loft, from the days in the sixties when I used to have a good rummage in a great shop called "The Gramophone Exchange" in Wardour Street (London). They always had lots of 78s in stock so I picked up quite a few gems.

I love that song "Memories of You". It has such poignant words - almost on a par with "Stardust". Vaughn Monroe had a nice voice.

Yes. One of his most successful career time was in Britain in the late 1930s when he was one of Decca's top sellers. It's usually his British records we hear in films or TV. Doesn't mention that on wiki.

What a lovely selection of music tonight.

And what great news! Desmond has just said that he will be presenting a new series of "Icons of the Fifties" next March, including input from Jimmy Young, I imagine rather like Teddy Johnson's contributions to the first series.

And Helen, it was strange when "Singing the Blues" was a hit for both Tommy Steele and Guy Mitchell at the same time. On request programmes I remember that sometimes they used to play the first half of one version followed by the second half of the other!

I bet that sounded quite strange Eileen. I remember there were a lot of songs which had cover versions out at the same time, it seemed to die out in the early 60s.

Well, in the 1920s - 1940s it was quite usual for a hit song to be recorded by as many as a dozen artistes and bands. And they were not referred to as cover versions then.

In those decades many of the big hit numbers were from films, and folks would hear Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby etc singing their records from the sound tracks. But the music would have been published previously, say a few months before, so music publishers would offer the songs to other top artistes and bands and these would be on sale at the same time as the film soundtrack records.

Just randomly I'll pick a hit movie tune, from 1935, "Isn't This A Lovely Day" which you might know from the film 'Top Hat' where Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are sheltering in a gazebo from a rainstorm (watch it on youtube, lovely scene). Anyway I have a list here of 8 British bands who recorded in it 1935, probably as many solo singers did too, and in the USA just as many probably more recorded it, so I reckon there were over 20 maybe 30 versions of "Isn't This A Lovely Day" available from record shops in 1935!

I enjoyed hearing Bernard Wrigley ( love his voice) on Des's programme with his tale of Edie's Last Ride, very reminiscent of Stanley Holloway and his monologues. Nice sound too from The Stillsons, who are new to me.

Also enjoyed hearing Beep Beep again.... Very Happy

Usually miss the words of a song when it's played as an instrumental but not on the version of Bewitched,Bothered and Bewildered performed by Bill Snyder (who I have never heard of before) that Des played on his programme ..loved it!

Desmond has played tracks before by Joel David, i wrote to Desmond trying to locate a copy of OLD BONES and within 5days i recieved a lovely C.D. album through the post from Mr David who wrote that he wanted no payment just for me to donate a few 'pence' to my local animal refuge centre. If you 'google search' Joel David and Maureen Seaberg you should be directed to a Canadian website: www.warrenpress.net/CoronationStFeaturedExtraJoelDMaureenS.html
You will find a host of information about him. Hope this helps
Strange coincidence i heard OLD BONES played last night 19/10 in a scene on Coronation Street...

I enjoyed Desmond's programme tonight about healthy living. I have to mention the 1930s recording commonly known as The Raspberry Song. I've always loved it since I saw Spike Milligan miming to it in one of his "Q" series.

Here's a YouTube link to it:
