I have Bipolar and i have found when i am having a low period i stick on classic fm (R3 a bit to heavy for me) and i use it as a coping structure. When i am well i cant touch it.I know nothing about classical music but some of it is so smoothing. Is there a genre you turn to when you have had a bad day....week....month...or year?

Yes if I'm down or needing something I turn to classical but Classic FM wouldn't do due to the adverts and presenters, I couldn't relax. So it's R3 or vinyl for me.

I DO listen to Classic FM when I'm in a 'normal' state, in the mornings (now that cheesy Bates has gone) or the late evening programme.

If I'm feeling down I usually listen to a selection of late 60's tracks which remind me of the very happy times I had in my childhood

The only problem is that when I realise just how much life in this country has deteriorated over the last forty years or so it makes me even more depressed - and then I resort to listening to Elgar's Cello Concerto to cheer me up Laughing

I'm a bit like Ruddles in that I go to some tapes/mini discs that I've made up over the years. A lot of early 60s and some odd bits that are probably best termed 'Guilty Pleasures'! You've got to be in the right frame of mind to make them so I they remind me of feeling good.

There are lots of bits of classical music I enjoy but I don't like listening to a whole show of it so don't listen to Classic FM and only rarely to R3. I prefer 'light music' and still miss Melodies For You.

I sometimes get low and I really don't know why.. ( maybe a topic for another thread! ) and at those times I always feel better listening to the music I know and love.
I decided a couple of years back that recent music does nothing for me in the main.. absolutely nothing. In fact, I don't even want to hear it, which is partly the reason for my drifting away from Radio 2 ( sorry Rachel Laughing )
I don't feel bad about it either, I don't want to live in the past but I'm not so keen on the present in many respects. The simple fact is, older music makes me feel great and I turn it up.
A great example of this is the beginning to "The Boat That Rocked"... I haven't watched it yet but the opening few minutes feature the Kinks "All Day and All of the Night"... how many times have I heard that track and yet it still excites me!

Although I wouldn't excpect many, if any on here, to know Zappa's music, he is possibly the best comfort zone I could be in, quickly followed by Cream. I watch their get together concert in 2005 quite often and I love it.

I listen to Classic FM a lot, the adverts are annoying but like littlepieces I find Radio 3 a bit heavy so with no other real alternative that's what I turn to.

If I'm at home I'll stick a CD on, it might be cheesy but The Lark Ascending cheers me up almost without fail. It reminds me of warm, sunny days.

Helen, I really prefer light music too and during last summer I recorded many of the programmes put out by Radio3. I still miss Alan's Melodies For You for the sheer variety and unexpectedness of what he played.

Toggy, did you watch the BBC4 programmes about Vaughan Williams on Friday? The first one was about The Lark Ascending. A friend of mine who would have enjoyed them didn't notice them in the schedules so I hope they are repeated in the near future.
