Looks like there'll be some interesting programmes and archive material in the Friday Night is Music Night series next year. The BBC Concert Orchestra celebrates 60 years since its first broadcast.

The programme information for Friday 20 January 2012 reads:

Quote:
In this new 11-part series, Ken Bruce salutes the BBC Concert Orchestra on their 60th anniversary and trawls the archives for some classic performances from their first 60 years.

The BBC Concert Orchestra made its first broadcast on 11 September 1952 on the BBC General Overseas Service. Today, the 60 musicians who make up the BBC Concert Orchestra broadcast weekly in BBC Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music Night.

A feast for light music fans, the series features concert performances from Matt Monro and Dudley Moore as well as more recent collaborations with Michael Bublé; Lionel Richie and Peter Gabriel.

In this first programme Ken recalls the early days of the BBC Concert Orchestra plus a chance to hear a concert from the BBC archives from their silver anniversary year in 1977 - 25 Glorious Years from the Royal Festival Hall features music from Die Fledermaus (J Strauss II); The Desert Song (Romberg); Glamorous Night (Novello); and Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Italien.

Ken Bruce talks to the players and conductors past and present for their musical memories and tells the story of this remarkable group of BBC musicians.

Great to celebrate 60 years of the BBC Concert Orchestra but this shouts loudly of being a cost-cutting exercise, sadly. We've had repeats for several weeks so it would have been nice to get some new stuff before 11 weeks of archive recordings.

You're right Ian, it is good to hear some archive material but Radio 2's evening schedules are increasingly relying on repeats.

I don't mind a certain level of repeats but not when it's stuff we heard just last year.

I couldn't agree more about all the repeats Andy and Ian. Sunday evenings are just awful since Melodies For You came to an end. I don't think there has been one new series on at that time since then.

Listening to it now and enjoying it. Ken gave a very interesting history of the concert orchestra from its early incarnation in the 1930s. Hearing a concert from 1977 is a welcome repeat.

Helen, I miss Melodies For You as well but the highlight of my Radio 2 listening is still Sunday evening with Russell Davies, Clare Teal and David Jacobs.

What a delight to hear FNIMN with plenty of light music and without the intrusion of too much pop. Good to hear Jimmy Kingsbury again too. As Ken said in his introduction by this time (1977) he was Presentation Editor at Radio 2 and not often heard at the microphone.

I was trying to find out whether Jimmy Kingsbury is still with us but without any joy. Does anyone know anything of his history after the late 1970s?

Ian.

Jimmy is no longer with us having died in the early 90s according to a post on the forum for former BBC staff:
http://www.ex-bbc.net/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1227345371

As far as I now he remained Presentation Editor until the late 70s or early 80s (possibly 1982) when Iain Purdon took over the role. Unlike Jimmy, Iain was only rarely heard announcing and reading the occasional news bulletin.

I'm usually in 'TV mode' when Russell Davies is on Eileen, but I used to enjoy him when he was on mid afternoon. I often listen to David Jacobs though.

Thanks for the info re Jimmy Kingsbury, which solves a longstanding mystery, albeit not in the way that I'd hoped. I still remember his cheery voice.

Thanks for that Ian!

I thought I'd seen something about Matt Monro but couldn't remember where.

Hope the John Wilson one is good as well.
