I’ve been listening to the Steve Wright Show for many years, tis a good show but I’ve long held the suspicion, though never the proof, that some of the Steve Wright in the Afternoon, Big Show, Factoids, aren’t entirely accurate or true.

You see, last week Steve said, and I quote, “ Human Beings are the only species that sleep on their back”. When I heard this, I looked at Hooby (Hooby is our Border Collie- he’s a perspicacious little fella) and Hooby looked at me but not in usual way that says, have you got a Bonio for me? Oh no, he looked at me in a way that said, that guy on the radio is talking nonsense, because Hooby knows, as I do , that he sleeps on his back, all four paws pointing skywards, mouth open tongue hanging out.
So: and I’ve been thinking about this, quite deeply actually, either Hooby, our Border Collie, is a Human in disguise (he’s very nearly hairy enough to be Alex Lester) or the Steve Wright factoids are just made up- perhaps a heavily disguised attempt at humour?

Discuss…

Laughing I think that Hooby is pretty astute, especially if he sleeps on his back with this legs in the air while Steve Wright is on.

The Factoids are remarkable for being the sort of useless information that might be interesting for ten seconds but is forgotten after the next one is read out, and also for the feeling that you've heard it before somewhere, probably on a previous show.

Which reminds me, it's Groundhog Day. The old boy won't be able to make it though the permafrost, so that's another six weeks of winter...

I have a white cat called Crystal who regularly sleeps on her back which I do think is fairly unusual but I tend to agree about your views on the SW 'factoids'

The term always reminds me of some very unpleasant disease - I'm sure you can buy cream without a prescription for that kind of thing Laughing

I seem to recall Santa saying that he once sent in a completely made up factoid which got read out on the show

Still I suppose it keeps people entertained which is more than I can say for most of the boring guests he has on the show who only ever go on there when they have a book or a film to promote Sad

Rachel, I heard this too and I instantly thought of our three border collies who all regularly sleep on their backs in the same fashion as your Hooby.

I agree that these factoids are merely show fillers and instantly forgettable - until you remember they read the same ones out last week...... Rolling Eyes

I’ve a further think, even more deeply than before, and if we discount all canine, feline, lupine and vulpine creatures as well as some types of insect, then I reckon the factoid is very nearly accurate- cos you try it. Go on, you know you want to. Think of any animal ….OK, I can see you’re shy…. I’ll go first…. Blue Whale! Does it sleep on its back? No! Zebra, does it sleep on its back? Nope! Crocodile? No! Elephant? Definitely no. Duck Billed Platypus? Nope! Water Buffalo? Hmmmm I’ll go with no. Polar Bear? Hmmm again, the one in the mint advert used to sleep on his back but real ones? They sort of curl up. Does that count? No. Speaking of Polar Bears, does anyone remember the Cresta Polar Bear? It’s frothy man? He was quite laid back but I digress. Camel? One hump or two? Nope! Sheep? Nope! Cows? No!!!! Baboon? Hmmmm possibly – needs further research. Does anyone know a Baboon? Giraffe? Nope!! Antelope? No! Rabbit? Hmmmm- possibly all curled up with each other snuggling in their warm warren. Jellyfish? Definitely no- they’d get all tangled up in their own tentacles…. So you see the factoid was very nearly true but then again I sleep on my side.

Yesterday, there was a Dog Year factoid which I didn't understand at all and Janey said , “Sugar is as bad for you as smoking or drinking alcohol!” That’s my life ruined then. Smile

I notice a comment about the same point on the topic of sugar on my AOL homepage today

As I have a borderline blood /sugar problem I have to be careful but these days they pick up things like that very early so it doesn't ruin lives to the extent it used to a few years ago

I was told that in such cases even diabetes can be reversed with the correct diet but you need to stick with it for the rest of your life

My mother used to always go on about sugar being 'a killer' and that was over 40 years ago so I guess she might have been a bit ahead of her time in that respect Smile

I used to have golden syrup sandwiches. Treacle (black) too. Messy!

Always real butter. "Can't tell the difference between Stork and butter" - only if your tongue's been cut off!

Real butter: gosh yes, those were the days. Now real butter is a treat at Christmas. Smile
We used to have Camp Coffee with Carnation Evaporated Milk, a doorstep of bread with butter and sugar, then it was off to the washeteria with a bag of wet school uniforms to use the tumble driers, after Black Beauty. Yummy! Smile

I make Golden Syrup sandwiches every night to feed the local badgers

I can get anything up to about a dozen outside my kitchen window by around midnight and I remember once I came home at 1am and they weren't too keen on letting me into the house

I knew a guy who had a similar problem and he used to distract them by getting his wife to throw jam sandwiches through the catflap Shocked

It's taken ages to get this photo because each time my camera beeps and the little flash thing pops up , it woke Hooby up before it had taken the picture but here it is at long last - the proof that Dogs are human. Smile

Laughing

Now all we need is a picture of a human doing the same thing to prove the original theory.
Any volunteers?

Yesterday, Steve, said that the average person swallows eight spiders a year. Blimey!

What about other animals? Antelope? Bats? How many other animals do we accidently swallow each year?
Ooh something in my throat... oh drat and double drat- there goes another Giraffe.
