Wonder with a organisation as big as the BBC that they would not have a cover presenter to call in, if news events make pre-records come over wrong. Couldn't Sunday Love Songs have been changed around and still continue with Valentine messages and tributes to Whitney Houston?

Every other radio station is doing this. Bob Shennan should be ashamed of himself today.

I was thinking along those lines too Marko.. I wondered if the show was recorded ( which it obviously is ), would it have been much of a big deal for Wrighty to "add" a couple of tributes? then again, I suppose he makes plans for his time off like the rest of us.

A good enough reason for Radio 2 to be different Mark. If you want to hear her all day long retune or listen to some of her music on CD and reflect.

Frankly I get a bit fed up when everything has to be changed when a celebrity dies. Yes it's very sad but life has to go on.

Aled Jones mentioned her death on GMS and one of her songs was played,
but then of course this is a live show.

Steve is off for a couple of days and the show is pre planned to be aired. Can't the BBC not change things around in a matter of hours of her death? It would have been the ideal show to have aired the tribute, as I say along side Valentines messages. I bet Wrighty does it next weekend, a little too late.

She is a singer who has tragically died Mark, not the head of state so why should everything be changed?

As Essex Lady has said Aled Jones spoke of it and played a song. You'll no doubt be expecting Barbara Windsor and Johnnie Walker to play something even though she had nothing to do with remit of their shows.

Did Wogan say anything? I only heard the second hour and wasn't really listening properly.

No doubt there will be tributes across all the shows tomorrow.

H

Edit:- Just had a look at Wogan's playlist and he did play a track during the first hour.

I agree Helen - it's a sad event but not on the scale of say Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury so coverage in the news plus the occasional tribute track is more than enough in this case

Maybe next time Steve does a pre-record they should get him to record hundreds of extra bits to cover the possibility of different stars dying suddenly just before the show is broadcast? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Richard Allinson started his show just after the news broke and managed to fit in three of her tracks and and paid a measured tribute.

Laughing Laughing Laughing I could just imagine a sudden, somber, Jeremy Vine type voice with an obvious edit where the celebrity's name is inserted... Laughing

Acts from the sixties die all the time but Brian Matthew doesn't redo SOTS. He just fits a tribute in later.

It's very sad news but I haven't listened to R2 at all today. If I could put one record into Room 101 it would be her version of "I will always love you" It's nails down a blackboeard to me

Midday, know doubt there be a celebration of her life. Richard Allinson did tweet saying he will be doing something on the afternoon show on Monday as he's sitting in for Steve.

Don't see the problem here, unless the pre-record had included a Whitney Houston song and no reference to events.

Actually, several Whitney songs do fall in the remit of the Elaine Paige show - for example I Will Always Love You, When You Believe and I Know Him So Well (none were played, of course)

I know Him So Well maybe but she didn't 'make' the song.

Ken Bruce struck about the right balance when he played one of her tracks as the 'lovesong' today

Also there's coverage on the JV show today

But she did do it as a single, and Elaine's show plays film and TV music so Whitney's songs from The Bodyguard, Preachers Wife and Prince of Egypt do count.

I Know Him So Well comes from the musical "Chess" so why wouldn't it be on EP's show?

I didn't say it wouldn't be on the show, all I said was that she didn't 'make' the song famous.

Sorry Helen, I meant my comment to be for Ian. Obviously didn't do that very well.
