I didn't hear all the topic on today's show but I got the guist of it from Breakfast TV...
Is it really necessary to bang on about carers/nurses calling people Darling and Dear etc...
We always tell our girls (staff ) not to call our residents Sweetie (yuk) Darling etc but it still gets said by some and I really don't think those residents mind at all. In fact, I'd say if they did mind, they'd soon say so!
I understand some people wouldn't mind and some would but national news time and time again?
Personally, I've always chosen never to say "Coffee please darlin'" or "Thanks Sweetheart"... it just isn't me ( whereas my brother always does.. Rolling Eyes )
But, it works the other way round too doesn't it.. I was always called My Dear, or Pet.. in fact, when I was the office junior and was responsible for nipping to the bakery every morning for goodies, the middle aged ladies there always called me "Sunshine" ( 'cause I was always smiling Laughing )
It just doeasn't matter....

Having said all that, I went into Halfords on Sunday for a new number plate to be greeted with " Can I help you Mate?" Shocked ........ Mate? Mate??? Laughing

Yet another unimportant thing blown up out of all proportion by the wonderful British media

I don't know which producer selected the subjects covered on today's show but I could quite happily have strangled them Mad

It's not very often I'm forced to turn the show off but I did today

I quite like getting 'mate' from teenagers--it makes me feel younger!

In her autobiography, Sunderland-born Kate Adie claims that the Mayor of her home city once addressed the Queen as 'pet' during a royal visit.

I get called "Poppet" at our local shop. I call my Uncle Gordon, darlin', he's 83, he calls me sweetheart. It's no biggy. I guess it would be different in a working environment.

It's funny how a lot of news stories recently seem to have been recycled - the names change but we've heard them before.

I remember we discussed this a year or so ago. I get called "Dad" by the lad who serves me on the fruit & veg stall on the market, and I suppose I should be flattered because I'm old enough (technically) to be his grandfather. And I once got called "gawjuss" by the girl in the chippy, after which everyone looked around for her guide dog.

You wouldn't expect to hear or be on the receiving end of such greetings in a professional environment (bank, solicitor, funeral director) or when you are going to buy high value items, but otherwise, so long as it is offered in a friendly way, I don't see the problem.
