Huge discounts are going to be offered to people who would like to take there holidays in Britain this Olympic and Queen Jubilee year. Butlins are one of the holiday companies who will be helping along with other hotel chains.

I've been advocating this kind of thing for many years

I very seldom holiday abroad - why on earth should we want to help another country's economy when our own is in such a dire state?

Besides we have some of the most varied scenery in the world within the British Isles and there's some great history right on our own doorstep

The only thing I would say is that people who decide to holiday in Britain should support local family run hotels and guest houses and not the large chains who employ foreign cheap labour thus denying employment to British born workers - those places should be boycotted without any question Mad

Ruddles, I absolutely agree with you on all you've just said. I love to holiday in this country. There is so much to see, explore, learn and enjoy. Even dodgy weather doesn't put me off.

Littlepieces, I have yet to go to the Lake District but hope to make it in the near future while I am still fit and able to walk long distances.

Lake District is brill - anywhere but Windermere, which in summer is crowded.

I agree Ron - best to visit Windermere in the off season and best to go there by steamer from Newby Bridge to avoid traffic

There are some very quiet areas of the Lake District especially in the South and West

I used to run a small caravan business in a place called Flookburgh not too far from Grange Over Sands and I love the small villages around there like Cark and Cartmel - incidentally as well as having a lovely old Priory Church Cartmel is a great place to go for a day out at the races

They only have two meetings per year but on a lovely country course with lots of stalls selling cakes, jams and a whole host of local produce and things for children like face painting and Beatrix Potter based entertainment

I say avoid the busy tourist hotspots and search out the real atmosphere of the Lake District

Incidentally I regularly used to come across the famous songwriter Barry Mason there as he used to stay in my friend's family run hotel - a really nice man and what he doesn't know about the music business just isn't worth knowing Smile

We prefer to holiday in this country too ( I've just come back from one) and always ( when not staying in our holiday home) use small private hotels. Going abroad is bonkers, unless you're going for several weeks at a time, the travel, the airports, the delays , the hastle, makes it all pointless.
They take lots of your hard-earned cash. You wait for hours to be shoehorned onto an aeroplane, you arrive in a strange country, you’re herded into a hotel full of strangers, you have a tiny room, you’re made to eat awful food and there’s no Radio 2.

Having said that, I did rather enjoy a long-weekend in Rome, a while back, and I've already been just about everywhere on the planet with my work so have no real desire to go again.

Already booked my holidays this year - two trips to that there London (one for theme parks, one for Chelsea Flower Show, both for the Comedy Store Players) and then a week in Edinburgh for the Fringe. Good value and convenient!

Much to the annoyance of my wife, I'm rapidly losing all interest in holidays which would normally mean the USA for us... I can't be bothered.
You part with a boat load of cash just to get homesick after a week and a bit.
As for holidays in this counrty? no way... Laughing

We usually go to the US as we have a liking for Florida beaches and have English friends who now live in Texas where we also love. Have also done a lot of other US destinations with O/H on business. Despite many years in the industry I don't like flying these days so I've really got to want to go, much to the annoyance of O/H who would go at the drop of the hat!

We're hoping to drive from Texas (Dallas area) to New Mexico (Sante Fe) later this year but haven't got far in the planning yet.

Having said that we do like Devon in this country.

If you think about it though, someone has got to read any post even if they draw the conclusion that it isn't worth reading afterwards otherwise they wouldn't have the knowledge to be able to draw that conclusion Smile

That may be so with other people, Rudds, but with my posts, I'm quite certain readers, think, oh god, it's her again, and rush on by. Smile

On the upside a nice young man in Tesco this morning, asked me out for a date, which although not something I can agree to, being married, has cheered me up no end, especially as he looked only about 30 years old. Smile

It was just the fillip I needed after a week away with my mum.
