Just when you thought it was safe cos I’d forgotten about it – it’s here, that time of the week when my team put in their nominations and thoughts for the dcms imaginary clock award. My mailbox overrunneth with nominations this week- just about every DJ and Presenter there is on R2 has a nomination- yes, even Jezza Vine! (although he was my nomination. FROG- love it). So we had lots to discuss at our meeting this morning- extra doughnuts were required. We have though, come to a decision, perhaps it was the doughnuts- yes, it was: this week the dcms Imaginary Clock Award goes to Anneka Rice. Cool beans!

What's happened about the 'post of the week' thing Rach - we've not heard anything about it for weeks Confused

All very well for these people to be stuffing doughnuts but they need to keep their minds on the job in hand Smile

What was it that Churchill said? - Give us the tools and we will finish the job.

I think there has been a dearth of suitable material, so, to misquote someone else, doughnuts find work for idle minds.

(Sorry, that's the best I can come up with)

Yeah the post of the week award seems to be dieing a slow and painful death, Rudds, due mainly to lack of audience participation, not just in the award process itself (with nominations etc) but also in the general sense of posting about anything at all and making the posts, few that there are, worthy of consideration on the basis, the reader perhaps, spurts coffee onto their laptop or falls off their chair laughing. Not a single nomination other than that one time you nominated yourself, which I think (without checking first) is outside of the rules by some margin. We had a little meeting about it and without giving too much away before the official announcement, the upshot is the post of the week award is going to be blended and rolled up with other elapsed calendar-time-based post awards –namely the post of the month award and post of the year award, both of which have yet to be announced but when they are, they will be very quickly superseded by the new blended award scheme which operates on a recurring time-base yet to be announced. Does that help?

I think I get what you're saying Rach

I suppose you don't want people deliberately putting up silly posts just with a view to winning the award

The winner, however frequently judged, has to be a naturally occuring comment with some aspect which sets it aside from regular posts - and yes, I know I can't nominate myself - I was just teasing when I said that Smile

This week is a first. We’ve had in the usual way, several nominations for the usual crowd of fantastic presenters but in addition to that, we’ve had an unusual nomination delivered in an unusual way, not for a Presenter but for a Producer. Being the first nomination for a Producer, we didn’t quite know what to do with it, so just popped it to one side, over there, you know, like a CV that didn’t quite make the grade but it’s too much effort to get up to put it in the bin. We had all the usual machinations about which of the nominated presenters should walk off with the imaginary clock: we couldn’t agree: it ended as a dead-heat between two of our favourites, then out of the blue, young James, who has a terrible cold, sneezed and all the nominations were blown onto the floor. We picked them up- disinfected them, dried them off and there on the top of the pile was the unusual nomination, hand-written in a hurry by the look of it. We contracted the services of a well-known, local lexicographer, who deciphered it for us. So for services, way beyond the call of duty, the award goes to a person who with a total disregard for his own personal safety, rescued the Best Time of the Day Show by his nothing less than heroic act of telephoning a sleeping Alex Lester to let him know he was late. So well done this week to Dr StrangeLove for saving us from the catastrophe of a short notice stand-in.

Blimey! These weekly awards come around quite quickly, don't they? Yes. It's been another week of loads of nominations- some of them from real listeners but you know how it is with the general public – no one takes any notice of them. Who are they anyway? Name one of them. Go on. Ok then, John Smith. Ah yes but John Smith is now John Smith – he's no longer the general public because we know his name. Doh!
Anyway on to matters of the dcms imaginary clock and more importantly, who is going to win it this week? Well, Chris Evans is back with a bang – so he's in with a shout and between the team here, we did manage to get one Carfest(South)ticket- yes just one but hey we're lucky to get that, so he's doubly in with a shout. Alex has been off the scale good this week too, so he could be the one but it's another DJ/Presenter whom has stood head and shoulders above all others this week, he's as mad as a box of frogs but he manages to keep our office a place of mirth and merriment as we munch our way through a raft of bacon baguettes and doughnuts. Come on Jezza, this one's for you big boy... let's hear it for Jeremy Vine... the tallest man in broadcasting.....

Anyone else thinking..... next Dr Who?

It would be so easy for us to suspend the award ceremony this week, what, with the Big Cheese being on the ropes and all that. But. No. The Show must go on. Big Cheeses come, Big Cheeses get chopped up into small pieces and fed to the Press on crackers but we must carry on regardless. The music can never stop, if it ever did, you can be sure, there wouldn’t be a chair for all of us. So let it play on. Since we all have to pile down to Leveson tomorrow, oh joy (keep an eye out for us- you know what my feet look like Smile ) we’re going a day early with the gong giving this week…..

And so without further delay we must move on to matters of great importance: who in the Radio 2 crowd this week, is going to get the gong? Well it’s a tough call. Oh yes. It’s been a fantastic week. Jo Whiley, very nearly clinched it but then blew it with a really bad track, come on Jo. Chris Evans had it in his hand with his Tractor pictures on facebook and twitter but let it slip into the clutches of Ken and Lynn with their discussion on Zen from Blake’s Seven (although they were actually describing Orac not Zen: Zen was the all knowing, talking, built-in brain of the spacecraft with a flashing dome like interface on the dashboard, where as Orac was as Lynn described Zen (Orac) perfectly, a Perspex box with fairy-lights inside- unforgivable to get them mixed up, Lynn.) It was in your hands, you must have been able to hear it ticking. The weekend crowd did a great job too, Tony Blackburn- he so deserves the dcms imaginary clock award this week but alas, it’s not to be, because everyone, has been blown-away by the 5-foot, 6 and very nearly half inch of genius, that is Alex Lester- AKA – The Dark Lord. Well done Alex – a second time winner. Once more and you get your name on it! How cool would that be?

Time, Alex Lester said in his blog, speeds-up as we get older. Recent evidence suggests that he could be right because it seems like only yesterday that I was typing-up last week’s award notes. One wonders: does it perhaps work the other way around? We get older as we speed up…as we press down hard on the throttle pedal of life, the years stream past like those white lines in Star Trek when they jump to Warp Drive…… nah… we actually get slower- well until you buy one of those electric buggy things. I’m fascinated by those: we’ve been looking at getting one for an elderly relative, so I’ve had a few test drives and I’m smitten. They are great for shopping, you can drive them straight into Waitrose and the Butchers- no need to park! But I digress.

This week it has, we’re pleased to say, been another tuffy: Vanessa has laminated the planet. We love the wipe-clean surfaces she’s provided for us this week. Oh yes. And Chris Evans of course, continues to bubble away deliciously in the breakfast casserole pot at the same time as organising stuff like Carfest and trips out in his boat with his mum. We think he must be ambidextrous. Jezza has been off-the-scale brilliant this week and a chap called Patrick made us laugh at time of the day which hitherto has been reserved for our daily dose of factoids from the Mic-meister himself, our Steve. Curvy King Ken cavorted his way though the week with moves that would have Hot-Gossip gasping but this week, the winner and most worthy recipient of the dcms imaginary clock award, goes to one Mr Simon Mayo – the beer glasses will be chinking all over Rootes Hall tonight. Well done Simon… you should have played Messing Shoes Blues by Darts last night though. Smile Cool

Woooosh! Today is 2day- we were, here at the dcms quality-monitoring group, going postpone our award ceremony this week, so that we could take account of 2-day’s output before deciding who gets the gong this week, but no, you see, last Monday, there was a show on R2 that was so good, no one here could imagine a better show happening this week. Of course we are constantly having our imagination shown to be lacking in some quarters. Imagine that. A lack of imagination. Gosh no! Not us. So we’ve decided to stick with plan A.

This week, for what may well have been the peak of Radio 2’s output for all time, (well until something better comes along), for a truly brilliant show( Bank Holiday Monday), the dcms Imaginary Clock Award goes to one Mr Tony Blackburn. He’s waited a long time for this but at long last his award has come home to roost. ( and I’m not even one the 500 women he’s slept with) Well done Tony.

I completely agree... I listened to the whole show whilst beavering away putting up a ridiculous amount of timber racking (shelving) and enjoyed every minute... an excellent show.
I can't bare to think of the dark old days before Tony joined Radio 2! Razz

I know 500, I don't know where people get the time, I've slept with only 4 people ( an average of one per decade), and 2 of those were mistakes because I was drunk ( back in the days when I used to drink- early 20s)

I never knew that you used to drink Rach - you kept that one very quiet Smile

What happened to make you give it up (apart from the obvious about sleeping with the wrong people?)

You seem quite a confirmed tea totaller (or perhaps even Orange juice totaller) now Confused

Didn't care much for TB's show on Monday but he deserves the award anyway for his great services to POTP Very Happy

Ah drinking, yes, Rudds. Hold onto to something sturdy, because since you’ve asked , I’ll tell it like it is or was. When I was young and…… (sounds like a song)… drinking was the grown-up thing to do- I was no different to my peers, in that, I tried it, pretty much like everyone else does. I never really liked not being in control of my thoughts and actions when under the influence though.

.....I've removed this cos it's too depressing to think about it. Smile

Oh dear Rach - I'm really sorry - I wouldn't have mentioned the topic of alcohol if I'd known all that but I can entirely understand and symphathise with your position

I had a similar experience back in 1991 when a previous relationship broke down but I didn't actually go through with it only because I got interrupted by a friend who wanted me to go for lunch and when I got back my mindset was a little less morose - I remember thinking to myself that had I done it I would have missed a wonderful lunch including probably the best Porterhouse steak I have ever tasted Laughing - sounds silly now I know but it certainly didn't at the time

The outcome however was that I got married within six months to someone I did not love or even particularly like and was stuck in that marriage for more than 16 years and hated every minute and finally escaped only in 2007 when my former wife got bored and found someone else (I've often wanted to give that man a medal Laughing ) but looking on the positive side I have two wonderful sons who choose to stay with me and who definitely enrich my life on a daily basis so as they say - every cloud has a silver lining

And yes I agree it really wouldn't bother me if I failed to wake up tomorrow at all because as they say - life's a bitch and then you die - but I wouldn't want it to happen just yet for the sake of the boys

Early this week- cos we're off to chase the Olympic Flame tomorrow.

This week, well this judging/nomination week, kicked off with 2-day, so you might think that something from 2-day would at least feature in the nominations but no- not a single one. 2-day came and 2-day went and we’ve had a truck load of adverts for it since: a strange and bizarre advertising campaign to direct us away what is and what will be in favour of what has already gone. It’s like everything is backwards. The problem with 2-day is that it was actually only one day, we once suggested on the R2 MB that R2 DJs should work a pseudo-random shift pattern all the time so we’d end up with different DJs on the same slots each week- we were never paid of course … or even thanked for the idea. Never mind, our purpose is not to receive but to give, so we just do that.

We did spot on Friday last week that Ken and Lynn were keen to get their hands on the imaginary clock because they resurrected and breathed life into their earlier in the year discussion on Zen and Orac from Blake’s Seven. They even got them the correct way around this time but come on guys, we’re not that easy! You can’t just play to our weakness for all things sci-fi and hope to walk off as the winners- oh no! Good try though. How we laughed.

This week something happened at Radio 2 that has never happened before, sending shockwaves through the world of Broadcasting. DJs all over the world were left holding onto their microphones with their legs in the air as a happy hurricane of entertainment engulfed the planet. Oh yes. Liza Tarbuck, has her own show on Radio 2, and like moths to the eternal flame, we tuned-in by the ga-zillion. It was mesmerising stuff. We are smitten. We can’t imagine the imaginary clock going anywhere else- ever. So well done Liza- just like an early Adam and the Ants hit- straight in at number one! Tick-tock!

Early again because tomorrow- we're not here.

This week- we’re at a loss because- well, to be blunt- we haven’t had that much time to listen: the radio has been on obviously, but with one thing and another as well as the Olympic Flame to deal with and chase around, we haven’t really paid much attention to it- the radio that is. So we’re relying completely on nominations this week and as ever under these circumstances will award the dcms imaginary clock as dispassionately as possible.

We wish the imaginary clock was similar to those bottles of perfume with the little extra bottle on top to pop in your handbag- so that we could share it between two or more presenters but the team here said that was a stretch of the imagination too far:- then ensued a long and heated debate about the boundaries of imagination which was eventually won by the side of the argument that goes like this: imagination has no boundaries, so there! So for this week- we have imagined a multi- dimensional shape-shifting, time-shifting Clock that can be in more than one place at the same time: oh yes!

So we’re pleased to announce the following presenters have won this week’s award.

Sally Traffic
Lynn Bowles
Moira Stewart
Vanessa Feltz
Rebbeca Pike

We’re back in our usual slot this week, which is surprising given that our Big Cheese is in the Dock today. Sliced or diced with a Pineapple Chunk? We’ve got the decorators on standby. We love him really. On to matters more important than the sideshow across town….
The dcms imaginary clock award: you may recall that last week we went a bit wild with a multi-dimensional, time-shifting, shape-shifting clock, like one of those episodes of Dr Who that leaves you thinking: Meh! I don’t understand!

We’ve had such a fun week, and once again several nominations: Alex Lester of course for his Millennium Carpet (plenty of that left by the way) and that he was wearing shorts this week:- was he perhaps Bart Simpson in an earlier life? He’s definitely turning into his dad. Do’h! Good news about that pasty tax though, eh Alex? Hey! My car has its name on its Mats. There’s nothing wrong with having F355 on your mats baby! Chris Evans also has a nomination this week for the missing car seat and the usual well-managed general mayhem; he works closely with captain chaos so be careful because unlike our imaginary clock, you can’t be in two places at the same time. Jezza Vine for his debate on Mobility Scooters on hen nights etc (we think he stole that idea from us- but we don’t mind, we’re flattered:- we’re like Nat West, there’ll be no charge!) So without further ado, this week’s award goes to: and it’s a second time award for this chap, a brilliant show this week, the organist who really does entertain, if only for a very short amount of time. Nigel Ogden- way to go, big boy! Most people do.

With so many away on holiday, so many stand-ins and so many jubilations going on this week, we’ve decided that it’s all too difficult to choose a winner- even with Alex’s fantastic blog about the Queen’s workload, which, on its own would win if only blogs were allowed to be part of this process…... but they aren't.... so… hold onto something sturdy…… it’s a rollover folks! Next week, it’ll be a double-imaginary clock up for grabs. Imagine that. Get your nominations in. Smile Oh BTW, I'm back from my extened two-centre holiday.

Well here we are, it’s rollover time folks. Yes it’s a double bubble! It’s been interesting listening to 2 this week because several presenters have mentioned the R2 Clock- yes really – so blatant. Jeremy Vine even claimed he could see it in Scotland! Smaller than I thought, he said. It’s Imaginary! It can be as big as you like! Chris Evans also mentioned the R2 Clock as did Steve Wright. On top of these obvious attempts to garner favour with our judging panel, there have been a couple of nominations and a few clock-worthy tracks. The Boy from New York City by Darts appeared on the Big Show earlier this week, which was like a burning arrow through my icy heart- totally fab although young James thought it would have been more suited to Graham Norton’s I can’t believe it’s not better slot but James is very young and doesn’t really understand proper music- he makes great coffee though. Thanks James.
Alex Lester has been as bonkers as ever this week- although not quite as hairy- he’s had his hair jujzzed, and we discovered the rumour that Dr Strangelove sleeps under his desk, is in fact true. Apparently he has a microwave and kettle under there too but don’t tell anyone.

There’s been quite a lot of use of the R2 conference rooms this week by the grown-ups- big cheeses in serious looking meetings: are we to expect a new R2 Logo any time soon, perhaps a new “look and feel” to the website or tie me to the chair and whip me till I beg for more, a new playlist?! Time will tell. But for now: onto much more important matters. Who gets the gong this week?

It’s another first-time winner folks – he’s been there, seen it, done and won everything else before, except for this one. Let’s hear it for our big rollover double dcms Imaginary Clock Winner: A Master of the Broadcasting Universe, Presenter of the Big Show and all round good guy..… Mr Steve Wright!

Yes folks. By popular demand: it’s back! People Power really works!!! We’ve been flooded with e-mails ( ok then just three but that’s a lot for us) requesting the return of The R2 Imaginary Clock Award, and who are we to disappoint?…… What’s that? Pretty much everyone. Ouch: like a dagger in my chest. You can be so cruel sometimes. Anyway , it’s back , it’s live, it’ll be right here tomorrow morning at about 9am … ish… we don’t run a tight ship here…. The schedule depends very much on the weather and how far the dog wants to walk … so if you really want to make a difference, get your nominations in by private massage before 7pm this evening. We’ll sleep on them… not literally then we’ll open that golden envelope to reveal this week’s winner!

If you’re not already tuned in – then listen up- cos we’re back, live and lascivious with the award ceremony that blows all others into the weeds. If you only ever win one award, then make it this one sweethearts, because you cannot imagine anything with more street-cred than this baby. Yes folks you’re witnessing a triumphant return, just like the Salmon of Capistrano, the dcms Radio 2 Imaginary Clock of the Week Award has landed on our shores for your delight and delectation. Enjoy!

With not a single nomination in the postbag, it’s been left to us sort the wheat from the Chaff once again. You lot start as you mean to go on- just relax- don’t feel that you need to put in any effort at all. See if we care. Our nominations this week: all of whom made us howl at some point- not knifepoint obviously just a different times: so in no particular order……… pause for effect…..create some tension…..electrify the atmosphere……….. buzzing? … Yes!? Here we go…..

Fuzzy Feltz . Yay!!!!! Loud cheer, rapturous applause…….

Chris Evans. Yay! Not quite so loud cheering and few mumbles of … oh not again… come on he wins everything.

Jezza Vine. Yay!!!! Loud Cheer, rapturous applause……

The guy who filled in for Graham Norton whose name we can’t remember… Yay!!! ……. But who was he?

And the winner is………..

CHRIS EVANS!!!!!! ……

You know each time I post something on here, I fondly imagine that next time I look there’ll be a healthy dose of cutting-edge, witty responses and encouragement, spawning all sorts of spin-off threads and general stuff going on. Hubbub- we like that. But no. My logical mind cannot reconcile the anomaly that this place really is. As I gaze ever hopefully from my office window across the throng of this vibrant planet, the thought that, we did this, us: humans, crosses all over my mind like the tracks at Clapham Junction. How cool is that?! Surely some of that, even just a tiny part, could find its way in here: but after returning again and again like an energetic playful puppy with a ball, I find myself having to be content with … well, it’s life Jim but not as we know it.

Chris looks just fine dandy in his camping gear- how would you look after three days in a field?

Ooh..... another thought has crept into my mind. I'm not sure that I like this thought but I'll share it with you anyway. What if all the stuff I write is dull, boring and really just not worth bothering with? What then? Gasp! It all my fault. Now I'm depressed.

It's all change at the dcms. A girl boss! But don't panic, the dcms R2 Imaginary Clock Award will remain extant, for the time being anyway.

We have to go early this week because there’s some sort of big meeting tomorrow- new boss and all that. The rumour (it’s more than rumour actually) is that we’re having a bit of a move around and it affects me- oh no! I’m moving from the R2 Monitor Group- apparently my team has done so well, they want me to do the same for the commercial radio lot. The complete Hoons over in the other corner. OMG! The poison chalice! Just strap me to it and send it off into space. Promotion? Apparently. Sounds more like punishment to me. The good news is that some of my team (James, Pete the feet and Sally-Anne) are coming with me. There is other good news too. The dcms R2 Imaginary Clock of the Week Award will continue, although any influence I have over the winner will be greatly reduced: probably to less than zero… but I’ll continue to host and post the results on their behalf- just the kind of girl I am. Taking my place is Dangerous Brian- he wears socks with sandals, doesn’t like Chris Evans, in fact I’m not sure that he likes anyone at all, although we love him for his bow ties and the fact he is almost fanatical about cleaning the office kitchen area: if you want anything cleaning – pop it in our kitchen- 3rd floor, area D2. Brian will be delighted.

Moving on to matters of vital importance- who gets the gong this week? You might think that having a great fondness for the recently returned Lynn Bowles that she is the walk away winner, or perhaps it would be Alex Lester for his pet name thread which has had us howling in the aisles but no, even that ( yeah I know), has been surpassed this week by Jezza Vine with this single phrase: is your life blighted by Charity Abseiling? Well done Jezza- that, we think, was a World first. We’ve checked the World’s Broadcasting Archives – it has never been discussed as a topic on talk radio – ever. So for finding in a world where it’s all been done before, a new and interesting topic, this week’s dcms R2 Imaginary Clock Award, goes to big Jezza Vine …… yay!

Have one for us Jezza. Smile

I agree with you Rach about JV but I'm surprised he didn't get some kind of award for breaking new ground on radio when his show about a week ago included a discussion about whether men should be forced to be seated whilst relieving themselves and whether all urinals should be removed from mens toilets

Apparently the idea came from some female politician in Taiwan where it's quite big news Shocked

This just in from Brian.( Dangerous Brian as he's known here.) A copy of his e-mail and my reply below.

Rachel,

This week's winner of the dcms R2 Imaginary Clock Award is Janice Long.

regards...

Brian,

Thank you for your input: R2 is little more "woohoo! and yay!" than R4. I know you've spent 10 years on the R4 desk but surely it didn't suck out all of your life. Maybe you should ask Liz to do this in future.

regards...

Woohoo! yay! Well done Janice- a first time winner!!! How cool is that!? It's like getting membership of the Good Morning Chris Club - much more exclusive though, especially since a few months ago Chris got so excited that he said, "in fact everyone is in the Good Morning Chris Club"- which begs the question, why are people still writing in, if everyone is already in the club? What's that? They weren't listening!!!! Surely not.
