Radical Cleric Abu Qatada is getting even closer to be deported back to Jordan. He's been arrested and jailed after being released to a safe house. Theresa May has had assurances he will be trialed fairly when he's kicked out of the UK.

| Yet another appeal has delayed any deportation. The greedy lawyers, leeching off the taxpayer, are the winners here and that's all that matters. |

Whilst I agree with your general sentiments Schiz I'm sorry but I don't think one can blame the lawyers in this case - they are only doing their job and would risk being sued for negligence if they failed to do the job properly
The fault clearly lies with the Home Office in failing to be able to do basic arithmetic in counting exactly when the appeal deadline actually ran out
The BBC's correspondent Danny Shaw actually told the Home Office that they had got their dates wrong so they can't say they weren't warned about it
The problem no doubt comes down to some incompetent civil servant being unable to do their job properly but I think this issue is going to become so big that it's likely to be a resigning issue for the present Home Secretary which would be a shame as I do have quite a high regard for her and we certainly need more female MP's in Government positions

| Yes, Ruddles I agree with all that you just said. It would be a shame to lose Theresa May but on the other hand with such a high-profile case depending on the simple matter of getting the dates right, I'm surprised that she didn't doublecheck on the info she was given. I would have, in her position. |

The problem for the Home Secretary is that although this issue alone is causing a huge problem it comes on top of other recent problems on her watch including the inexplicable decision to allow thousands of people into Britain without the Border Agency having any form of passport control in place - probably not her decision but for which at the end of the day she carries the can
Politics is a very dirty business even within one's own party and I am sure that even now there are ambitious Conservative MP's eyeing up the chance to boost their own careers 
I'm just waiting for the Prime Minister to announce that he has total confidence in the Home Secretary - when we hear that we'll know for sure she's leaving her post

The problem is interpretation, where to start the 3months, if the decision to begin the period was made 17th of January say, is 17th the first day or is 18th the first day at midnight? and come April does '3 months' end midnight 16th, or midnight 17th......
The answer of course woud have been to call some office in The Hague and ask them, the Home Office must be in regular touch with these offices surely.......

| Last Thursday a member of the audience on Question Time said someone of the ilk of Abu Qatada had been expelled from France without waiting for the due course of the law and they (the French government)had been fined 21.000 Euros for doing so.. sounds like a plan ..I don't mind donating a penny towards a fine if it leads to Mr Qatada's swift exit from this country. |
