Jezza had an interesting debate on this yesterday. There was some crusty old military “expert” advocating that shooting down airliners over London is a better option than having the Olympics disturbed – he later, quite bizarrely, questioned the sanity of members of the public who have spoken in opposition to the plans.

He said, the SAM missiles would be used as a “last resort”, he said, “hopefully” they would get enough warning of the attack, that the airliners could be shot down over the sea in air to air combat. What if they don’t get enough warning?

Well as far as experts go, I have both feet planted in Lord Sugar’s camp …” there ain’t no such thing as a bleedin’ expert”, Lord Sugar once said. Let’s face it , how many people are even experienced in shooting down airliners over major cities, let alone being expert at it? A couple of trigger-happy people on the USS Vincennes perhaps? So let’s not pretend these experts know what they are doing.

Does anyone actually think that shooting down an airliner over London wouldn’t disturb the Olympics? The burning wreckage of a 737 is strewn across 5 square miles of central London causing huge loss of life, multiple enormous fires and mass panic but never mind- we can all cheer when someone gets gold in the undisturbed egg and spoon race? I think they’re all barking mad. If you ask a warmonger how to solve a problem, his answer is always going to be, let’s have a war.

Doesn't bear thinking about, does it?

Can you imagine the panic when the call comes in. Something like...

Most valuable and metallic objects don't last long on rooftops these days. They get nicked. Best scenario, probably.

Yet another good reason for not having this loss making, overhyped event in Britain at all

We,the public ,will end up paying for all this nonsense without any long term benefit

The money would be better spent on rebuilding our once great British industrial base Mad

I listened to this... or at least I tried to.... even by JV's recent standards this was one of the worst debates I have heard. At one point Jeremy wondered if there would be a fire hazard caused by launching missiles from the roof of a block of flats (head in hands at this point). Brilliant! I'm sure it never occurred to the designers of ground-to-air missiles not to design a launcher that set fire to itself and the surrounding area when a missile was launched! God help us.
BTW, the publicity surrounding this is intended, quite sensibly, to let potential terrorists know that security is being stepped up specifically for the Olympics: they can, in theory, crash a plane into the Houses of Parliament at any other time of their choosing.
The JV show ws painful.... some people thought we were defending against fighter jets (?), other people thought there was only a threat from hijacked airliners. The point of a good debate is that it needs to be informed, and for this the chairman needs to be informed.

Does anyone seriously think that any terrorist worth his or her salt is really going to attack the Olympics with all that security?

It seems pretty obvious for me that the terrorists are more likely to attack a soft target well away from London whilst the attention of the security forces is distracted on protecting this crazy event

I think places such as Birmingham, Manchester Liverpool,Edinburgh and Cardiff are far more at risk Sad

I hear what you're saying about the Olympics, Ruddles....
There is a sizeable grumpy contingent in this country who, like us, could not care two hoots about the 'running very fast in circles' contest, or the 'throwing a stick' competition, or even the 'jumping into a pool really nicely' championship.
However, if that is what some people choose to devote their lives to, and many others regard them as role models because of it, then on balance it is probably best that they don't get blown-up by fanatics.

I have nothing against the competitors who take part in the Olympics most of whom train very hard in their quest for medals - I would just prefer them to put their abilities on display somewhere other than Britain - I have very little interest in what they are doing but that is not to say I dislike sport in general as I follow many sports quite avidly - but not athletics Smile

My gripe is more against the politicians who seem to see having the Olympics in London as a wonderful coup in order to boost their own egos despite the fact we all know that the whole thing will generate a huge financial loss which taxpayers in the rest of Britain will end up having to pay for - I personally think that the residents of London should pick up the bill and not the rest of us as they are the only ones likely to benefit financially from this great sporting circus Mad

If we cast our minds back to spring 2010, you will of course remember that Ash Cloud. That unforeseen, invisible enemy which arrived without warning and was thought to be so dangerous that it could down an aircraft. The thought of an airliner crashing anywhere over the UK was so awful, so unthinkable, that the Government’s solution was to close UK Airspace for something like two weeks. A period, in which, nothing bad happened. The Economy didn’t collapse, no shops ran out of food, no power cuts, no riots, nothing: indeed, life carried on much as normal for almost everyone: Waitrose didn’t even run out of “fresh” South African fish!

So why is it, when there is an identifiable specific threat, to a specific event, which would mean an aircraft crashing into the Olympic Park (quite a small area), the Government’s response is to say to the terrorists, bring it on bad boys, but we won’t let you crash into the Olympic Park, oh no, we won’t let you get your way, we’ll shoot you down, perhaps over Hyde Park-instead, so there! See how you like that! It makes no sense to do that. If there really is a credible threat of attack from the air during the Olympics then, UK Airspace should be closed- end of: and keep all the planes already here, on the ground. Any planes heading for UK Airspace during the closed period could be easily dealt with before they became a threat to anyone here on the ground.

If they had planned for this from the start, then people coming from oversees could land in Paris and get the train here. It would have been a fantastic demonstration of the EU integrated transport system.

There was a bit yesterday on Jezza where a chap said he had few things to say about missiles, and Jezza said, “fire away”. I was in fits.

Speaking of missiles- do you think we’d have more confidence in them if they were called Hitiles?

I think it was lost on the caller but it made me smile!

This whole olympic thing annoys the hell out of me so I won't add to what Ruddles has said. I think the time has come for it all to stop end of story.
