I used to regularly attend the Radio One Roadshow when it came to North Devon and many times chatted with DLT as he used to stay in the same hotel as me
I also once met a guy in there who claimed to be a member of the Baron Knights and I didn't believe him and thought he must be some kind of nutcase but rather embarrasingly about a year later I saw a photograph in one of the local papers alongside a feature commenting on how they regularly played gigs in the area and yes - there he was large as life
I do miss the old roadshow format - why can't Radio Two revive it? - Chris Evans would be in his element and it would be the type of show which would suit his style _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

If we are going down that road then let's have DLT back on a Sunday morning complete with Snooker on the Radio. He would be much better then Wogan who uses the same old cliches week after week and should have been retired years ago |

I completely agree Nick - I haven't listened to the irritating presenters on Radio 2 on Saturday or Sunday morning for years - but bring back DLT with his snooker and darts quizzes and we'd really be cooking on gas _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I think listener expectations have moved-on from listening to the radio on the beach, Rudds- Radio 2 do other things - differnet things- different is good. There's the party and proms in the park: this year there's Carfest North and South and 2-Day, we've had the show in a field, show in a hot-tub, there was the Christmas Roadshow a few years ago which was started as a rumour on the R2 message board- then it happened....
... I understand from the grapevine that next year we are set to see ( hear and be part of) something huge..... The Radio 2 Roadshow Revival - Another Final Tour. Breathing Life and Live Music into parts of the Country other Radio Stations cannot reach. Ten Days, Ten Venues, Ten Bands. A travelling Roadshow so vast, you'll be able to watch it from Space. |

I'm not sure I entirely agree with your views on this one Rach
I think a great many of the current Radio Two audience would have a great affinity with the equivalent of the old Radio One Roadshow not least because many of them would see it as a wonderful slice of nostalgia - just look how popular shows like POTP and SOTS are and ask yourself why on Sky stations like UK Gold attract such big audience figures - answer because many people prefer to watch quality shows from the past rather than much on the mediocre output broadcast by the BBC and other major channels today
We have to get away from this silly idea that everything from the past is 'old hat' and therefore 'per se' bad
From a factual point of view not all the old Radio One Roadshows were broadcast from beach locations - I recall shows done at locations such as Plymouth Hoe, Carlyon Leisure Centre,Southport Floral Hall Gardens,Blackpool Winter Gardens and The Cobb Lyme Regis and I think once they used to broadcast it from a Golf Club
I agree that some of the present ideas being developed are good such as the likes of Carfest but in all honesty who is going to remember most of the current crop of events from today in twenty five years time?
The Roadshow is an institution which we all remember including people a great deal younger than me and I think it would prove a great success if revived in some form or other
Of course the other thing which needs to be remembered is that, according to all the evidence, because of the current economic conditions far more people are taking holiday breaks at home rather than going abroad so if I was in Bob Shennan's position I'd be thinking that I'd be on to a winner but I suppose that statement perhaps assumes a certain amount of common sense on the part of Mr S which, on previous evidence, appears to be a totally fictional concept _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

You make some good points there, Rudds but most of the examples you mention of things from the past are popular with us older folk because they’re available on yer telly or radio, in yer lounge, without any effort or expense.
If Radio 2 did Roadshows like old the Radio 1 Roadshows, us oldies wouldn’t get anywhere near it for all the young folk, so we wouldn’t enjoy it.
I didn’t do too well in geography, Rudds but I’m sure Plymouth Hoe is very close to a beach as is the Cobb at Lyme Regis ( I was there just a few weeks ago) and Southport and Blackpool are beach towns- even if the Roadshows were a hundred yards or so inland.
But you’re right- everything old isn’t bad. (I’m quite old and I‘m a good girl!)
I think the remembering things like The Roadshows of our Youth ( blimey! That could be a book title!) is more to do with how the roadshows contrasted with the rest our lives at the time when we had very little else, than how fantastic the format was.
Mr S is doing ok. Of course he could do better if he took up some of my ideas: perhaps he should invite me to lunch to discuss them. |

What you say is certainly true Rach but actually I think it would be a very good thing if any new version of the Roadshow was crowded out with young people provided there wasn't too much modification of the current playlist because it would give youngsters today a taste of the tracks from yesteryear - obviously the shows would have to include some tracks from the current charts in order to have appeal over a wide age range but after all Radio 2 already plays some tracks from the current charts
And yes - of course as you say the Roadshow concept was something which was a coastal event even if not always literally on the beach
I just feel that things like 'Party in the Park' whilst attracting decent audiences are far too London and South East based as compared to the old Roadshows which travelled around the country so everyone from Oban to Penzance had the chance of seeing them and enjoying a great day out in the process
As for Bob Shennan - whilst I would never question your powers of persuasion Rach, I'm not sure he's the type of man who would listen unless of course there was something in it for him but I suppose it would be an interesting experience and at least you'd probably enjoy a very decent lunch _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Can I just be a party pooper and wish they would just stick to a normal schedule and have less repeats? We are in for a year of them on Sunday nights at 7 it would appear.
I'm not a fan of live outside broadcasts on the radio at all.

No, they're not bad (per se) - they're just old, and nine times out of ten remaking or rehashing, an old, successful formula doesn't work.
To begin with, two registers as second in the brain, and The Radio Two Roadshow doesn't have quite the same ring of excitement.
I don't know about great affinity - I also remember the originals, and saw a couple with DLT (didn't have a cosy chat with him though). They always struck me as OK for beach entertainment, especially with a bunch of friends, but seriously lacking on the radio, a thought reinforced by the experience of watching and listening to Chris' show in a field last year.

If there were as many Carfests as there were Radio 1 Roadshows it probably would. Of course, it is a much bigger event, and a highly commercial one, like many another festival or shows around the country this summer. Whether it gets repeated annually will presumably depend upon how much money it makes, rather than how good it sounds on the radio (is any of it going to be broadcast anyway?) |

I'm not suggesting that reviving a formula identical to the old Radio One format would necessarily be the way forward
Of course time moves on and for example it's easy to forget that many modern technologies we now take for granted were either non existent or in their infancy when certainly the earlier roadshows were going on
However I still feel that running a new format perhaps initially as a trial for one summer season would be worthwhile provided the shows were fronted by the right presenters - for me the JV Show could quite happily take a break for a couple of months during the 'silly news' season or alternatively KB, JV and SW could each give up half an hour of their shows for a limited period
Of course the acid test of likely success would in all probability be nothing to do with the format or the presenters but rather our wonderful British summer weather which also seems to have moved on over the last couple of decades _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

That is a very good point, Ron, and Helen raised it also. OBs are never great on the radio. The show in a field last year ( or was it the year before?) was a disaster because it was nothing like how Richard Madeley promoted it. No sun, sea or sand. The Spanish Armada was nowhere to be seen- romanic old fool)and the field turned out to be a very small paddock about the size of our back garden, in which, 200 wet, cold half-asleep, unenthusiastic, "lucky" winning tent-dwellers were shoehorned.
John Candy once said. Think big be big my friend.
The huge 10-day- 10- venue 10-band roadfest I mentioned earlier, wouldn't be on the radio- well maybe a few of the good bits would be but in the main it wouldn't be. There's more to being a radio station than just broadcasting. Any radio station can do that. |
