There was a special FNIMN last night as part of Radio 3's wonderful tribute to British light music which has been featured throughout the past week and continues for a few days yet.

The part I absolutely loved was the selection of tunes written by Billy Mayerl for “Over She Goes”. (1hr24mins into the programme if anyone wants to hear it). I'd always thought of him as a pianist only so this was an eye (and ear) opener and I would like to hear more of his compositions.

Yes Eileen, Billy Mayerl was quite prolific in songwriting for shows and films, and I've featured 5 or 6 of his tunes on my podcasts over the last couple of years, performed by dance bands. He often worked with lyricist Frank Eyton.

If you search Mayerl on this page:

http://www.r2ok.co.uk/playlists.htm

you'll find the songs.

I enjoyed most of the whole week of Light Music and though I like a lot of Classical Music anyhow I haven't listened to Radio 3 as much as I did during this event. But some of the music that was called light seemed heavy to me especially the programmes using choirs at the weekend.

Back on topic of FNIMN I was looking forward to the special on John Barry performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and according to the Radio Times it was to last three hours...it lasted two, it was mixed in the studio with introductions by Michael Parkinson and they had the applause of the audience merging into the music rather than I suspect it was on the night before and after the songs/tunes ended.

So it was good and worth hearing but I disliked the way that it was edited for radio.

I enjoyed it last night, but do agree that something was missing. I'm sure 'live' it was great - and my experienced was helped by a sort-of 'composer's commentary' by David Arnold on Twitter.

I actually went to the show at the Albert Hall and you're right Gildersleeve, the applause didn't merge into the music on the night.
I really enjoyed the show with the only let down being a slightly off key Rumer, who at one point came in about 5 to 10 seconds before she should have and had to wait and start again!!!!.
Haven't listened yet, have they edited that bit out?

Hi Gaz

I managed to get tickets also and it was a fantastic show. I heard a bit of FNIMN in the car and it did seem a bit rushed on the radio. Shame Michael Caine wasn't there in person but, as he said, you can't upset Batman. I thought Tim Rice was supposed to be there.

Found myself sitting in the next box to John's family!

Gazmando,
If it didn't really fit into the FNIMN spot then maybe Radio 2 having been allowed the rights for the concert could've given it more publicity and billing as a special concert.

I have to listen properly to the concert but as it really is heavily edited I suspect Rumer's mistake will have been taken out/tidied up.

Perhaps it will issued as CD or DVD release at some point.

The listing in the Radio Times was slightly inaccurate(the length of the programme)and it did say that Sir Tim was there.

Looking forward to this Friday's programme (18th Nov) with Ken Bruce hosting and presenting his OWN choice of music. The trailers sound promising.

Talking of overtures, I was pleased that they rounded off with the one to the Yeomen of the Guard--Sullivan at his finest.

I am enjoying the programme tonight. The first part is devoted to Robert Farnon's compositions and arrangements. I'm not sure when this concert was first broadcast but he himself was there. He has conducted some numbers and has been interviewed by presenter Robin Boyle.

The second part will be devoted to Stanley Black.

I caught bits of the programme. The two archive programmes featured were birthday celebrations for Robert Farnon (1987) and Stanley Black (1993).

As I frequently moan about R2 not playing light music, I must give credit where it's due for the feast of it on FNIMN on Friday gone--Eric Coates, Robert Farnon, Leroy Anderson, Percy Grainger, Albert Ketelbey, Anthony Collins and I may have missed some out.

Hi Everyone...
My dear Mum passed away on April 22nd and though she was receiving palliative care it still was quite a shock as no time limit had been given. Trying to get used to be alone and take an interest in life and things again but worried about the future as money will be tight and there is no guarantee I can stay where I am.

But no good running before I walk, hopefully it will work out ok. I am using charity shops to buy warm clothes as I dare not use the heating and I never thought I'd say this I may be investing in some Long John's...

Back on topic...in general I find that I am able to listen to most of the music we shared and the radio programmes.

FNIMN has been especially good of late for all the reasons given and I did enjoy Friday's programme devoted to Ray Charles...I had no idea that Mel Tormé son was a singer until this programme but it's not usual I guess, after all Ray Ellington's son I believe sings and is in the vocal group featured on Strickley on the TV and Matt Monroes son seem to have a successful singing career around the world but not heard much in the UK.

Though not a FNIMN programme I see that Radio 2 and a few presenters on the station are raving about Melody Gardot, the programme has certainly been promoted a lot with the same trailer cropping up seemingly quite often when I tune in. I haven't been won over yet but I'll see how I feel after the concert on Monday 6pm.

Hi GG, I'm truly very sorry to read about your mum's passing and I sincerely hope things will work out for you in terms of security and keeping your home... I'm sure they will.
Interest in life and other things will return in time for sure and, there's nothing wrong with sensible Long Johns!

Thank you SantaFefan,

Still raw and I am being told that I could not have done more for Mum, I had my first Sunday type meal for one a few minutes ago, that was strange, just thinking about me for now.

I'm sure that you are right about getting my interests back again. Listening to the radio is a start, I bought my first TV license the other day but so far haven't watched any.

Mum had little in the way of savings but it will affect me when I come into the money and it won't last long then hopefully they'll step in and help me again.

As times will be tough I have invested in a new monitor for the PC and replaced the main TV which is 30 years old as the new TV's will have last me for many years to come and I've replaced them now with the little money have otherwise when I do come into Mum's savings I have to keep receipts and prove what I buy.

I could do with a new mattress and a sofa.

I'll not worry that the carpets are worn. There's only me...

With full rent, community charge, food and utility bills that's not going to last long(I have health problems)

But they think I may pass the savings over to family and friends...I haven't any Sad

It hopefully will all work out in the end. I'll worry about the future later. I'm looking for a deal to save on heating and electric. I've found a pretty good deal that I hope means I have internet success for this year at least. Otherwise I'd be looking at four walls and just a radio for entertainment.

But the telephone, internet and tv are all coming in at 90p a day and that's not bad. And I can switch to less expensive package when I wish. Sorry to be off topic still.

GG, I too hope things work out well for you after your sad loss. Carry on enjoying the radio and all the programmes you used to listen to with your Mum - and carry on chatting to us on here.

Re long johns, they are great at keeping out the cold. I bought a base layer set (top and bottom) in a Milletts sale a few months ago.

Thank you...
It was funny last night a song that always moves me came on the radio The Folks Who Live On The Hill - Peggy Lee and it was followed by a favourite of Mum's(I'm ok with it too)Jim Reeves - I Love You Because...I managed to keep listening and not switch off.

My Fridge/freezer is smaller inside than the last but being single I can manage and it is absolutely packed. No room unless I eat something.

It's awful...I've hijacked this thread...sorry...

In some ways I'm eating fewer meals but good one's when I do...I'm going to have a go at mushrooms, tomato's, sausages, bacon, baked beans and egg. Followed by either fresh fruit salad or strawberries and ice ceam.

Long John's in 21st England...why not!

I forgot abot that Melody Gradot programme...any good? And another special at about the TV series Soul Train...

But hey I should be able to listen via Broadband Very Happy and I may dowload from the Desert Island Discs site ok some of the music is missing and they are in mono but it is mainly chat after all...

I don't often listen to FNIMN but I heard it being trailered on SOTS this morning and it sounded like it might be my cup of tea ....and it was !!!

Paul O'Grady guided us through some of his favourite music telling a nice tale of his love for The Orient Express which was followed by the theme from the film Murder On The Orient Express ....a favourite of mine..in fact the whole show was a delight from beginning to end ...well done to Paul and all who contributed to it.

I'll give it a listen Becky, had meant to record it as I hoped it would be good but wanted to watch Gardener's World live which was on for an hour last night.

I thoroughly enjoyed it although I was multi-tasking/shirking at the time, i.e. FNIMN on the radio, the footie (YES, the footie!) on TV whilst catching up with the ironing.

On 29 April I posted up an appreciation of the previous week's FNIMN for playing a good selection of light music. The show in question was repeated last Friday and I heard it all over again. Given that Desmond Carrington's show, which immediately preceded the repeat, had Ernest Tomlinson's Little Serenade and Eric Coates' London Bridge March, it all added up to an uncommonly good night for light music on R2. More sometime?

Next week on FNIMN is called Bond and Beyond

The BBC Philharmonic performs music from the world's best loved spy films, live from MediaCityUK in Salford.

Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode introduce songs from the James Bond films Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and For Your Eyes Only; as well as music from Mission Impossible, Where Eagles Dare and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

The BBC Philharmonic is, conducted by Robert Ziegler, and the singers are Ren Harvieu, Lance Ellington and Claire Moore.

The interval features Paul Sexton talking to John Barry, in a previously-unheard interview, which was recorded in 2001. The English composer, who died early last year, talks about his 007 years and a distinguished life in music.

Barry describes how he literally grew up in the cinema (with his father owning a chain of movie houses); as well as classic scores such as Seance On A Wet Afternoon and Born Free.
He also remembers the rock 'n' roll era of the John Barry Seven, when one reviewer described him as sounding like a 78 being played at 33 and a third; and he reminisces about some of his favourite Bond scores.

There is a chance to vote for your favourite Bond theme ...just scroll further down the link to do so....it will be played in the programme

The Bond programme from 5Live is actually on TV right now - how great to see the BBC Philharmonic doing their stuff, with FNIMN conductor Robert Zeigler. Excellent coverage too - not flashy, with good views of the orchestra.

I'm enjoying tonight's programme which is devoted to music associated with Gene Kelly. John Barrowman is hosting it, telling Gene's story and is, I'm glad to say, getting a chance to sing some of the songs.
