....might enjoy this play by Roy Smiles that was on Radio 4 yesterday.

Dear Arthur,Love John.

It's often assumed that it was Dad's Army that made John Le Mesurier and Arthur Lowe well known. This is not so. Arthur Lowe had come to national attention, after a long apprenticeship in theatre, as the uptight church warden Mr Swindley in Coronation Street. John had made many films and found success as the diffident Colonel in the popular sitcom George And The Dragon. But it was Dad's Army, late in their lives, that brought them fame, fortune and the oddest of friendships.

In 1982 John writes to Arthur to say how much he misses him and, as he does, we flashback to Dad's Army.........

I listened to it the programme this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was interesting to hear the interaction between the actors in Dad's Army. I also watched the TV programme about John Le Mesurier the other week. Mmmm..... I thought he came across as charming but rather strange.

I made a point of listening to it too. I thought it was absolutely charming and well written and acted. I knew instantly who all the characters were.

Dare I mention just one criticism of the script? When John was talking about abandoning his car (under Hammersmith Flyover Smile) he said: "I got fed up of it". John Le Mes would never have said that!

I think some of his 'strangeness' can be put down his parents, essexlady, from what we heard on the TV programme...Philip Larkin wrote of such parents....Shocked .
Was definitely in his own world most of the time......but lovely all the same...

Last week, I was horrified to see a family of Ducklings waddling along the fast lane of a dual carriage way here.. they couldn't get off the road as the centre is a concrete wall as is the nearside. There was no going back for them... poor little blighters.

A call to the local Police proved a waste of time so, me being me.. Rolling Eyes I "escorted" the family in my old truck for 2 miles in the fast lane with the hazards on! crawling speed of course.
Once the mother Duck spotted the nearside was grass, she started to waddle across both lanes with me now straddling both lanes..
Strange behaviour to some... Laughing

Embarassed well, I try my best.. Laughing

I do feel very strongly about animals and their well being. I've developed a terrific respect for wild creatures just trying to survive... with no help from anybody.
This is the second time I've seen a family of Ducks stranded on this stretch of road and it breaks my heart Sad

I've seen the same scene several times recently, too. Last weekend, while we were in Hunstanton (West Norfolk), we stopped to let three ducks waddle across a pedestrian crossing in the high street after a torrential downpour.
