Last Saturday my better half & I went to see Rick Wakeman in concert, he was playing at our local church, I'm not sure how they got him to come but he did.
Take away the keyboards, Jon Anderson, backing singers and everything else and you are left with what we saw last week, just Rick and his piano.
I have to say it was absolutely phenomenal, it isn't until you see him in a situation like this that you realise just how accomplished he is.

Afterwards we got to meet him, O/H has admired him since he was a child, they say you should never meet your heroes but in case case it turned out to be completely unfounded.
Rick is not at all grumpy, he's down to earth, very approachable and great fun.

The proverbial good time was had by all and the tickets only cost £20 Very Happy

Sounds like a good evening Toggy - I remember seeing Rick live around 40 years ago when he had a short period playing keyboards with The Strawbs but it's nice to know he's still around entertaining people

As for not being 'grumpy' I assume you are making reference to his numerous appearances on the TV series 'Grumpy Old Men' where he certainly gave the impression of being pretty hacked off with quite a large number of aspects of modern life, probably just like we are,so it really begs the question as to whether the real Rick Wakeman was the one in that series or the person you chatted to last week

I do know that he now has some quite big health issues as a result of his previous rock and roll lifestyle but to me he does seem a very sensible and genuine kind of guy Smile

To be honest when watching Grumpy old Men/Women I find myself agreeing with 99% of what is said Laughing I don't really think I am that grumpy (maybe a little ) Laughing

Rick has been teetotal for 27 years but yes the previous somewhat wild lifestyle was bound to have an effect as with many 'rockers' of that era.
Hopefully given that he lives a much calmer life these days he'll be around to entertain for a few more years yet.

Sounds a lovely setting for a performance,Toggy... wouldn't mind seeing him myself (in a setting like that) if he ever came round my way.

I agree Toggy, I'll bet it was a great evening. I didn't take much notice of Rick in his early years but he seems a genuinely nice fellow nowadays.
Grumpy Old Men was/is right up my street and I agree with all that's moaned about on the show... it should be renamed ""Sensible Old Men who Probably Should Be In Government!""

Indeed he did, and it was the best incarnation of The Strawbs in my opinion. "Sheep" was a favourite from that period.

Don't forget that the way those programmes are set up leads to the interviewees giving the sort of responses they're expected to give. Interview questions will be posed and re-post in such a way that there's only one answer to give to many of them. Each interviewee is paid to come up with a set of "grumpy" stories so that's what they do. If they came up with "un-grumpy" answers they wouldn't be used in the edit because they wouldn't fulfil the brief.

It's completely reasonable, though. After all, a production team rings the prospective interviewee's agent and says" We'd like to book X onto a show called Grumpy Old Men and in it we'd like them to reflect on things that get their backs up in life. In other words, we'd like him to have a good old moan about whatever they like". To which comes the response: "Oh, yes, person X would love to do it. What's the fee?".

That's life.....
