Radio 2 have approached Chris Moyles to host a show. The series will will explore 80's music.

| I like Moylesy, especially when he's fronting his "Quiz Night" show on Ch4. He has a cheeky, self-depracating, nature which I like. In fact, if he were hosting R2's breakfast show and was told to cut down the endless chat and lengthy anecdotes I'd probably listen - which is something I simply don't do at the moment! |

Hmmmm a tuffy, I don’t really like the Moyles as an idea, especially on Radio 2, but the few times I’ve heard/seen him, I’ve liked what he did. He’s one of those enigmas (no not an electric car) you expect him to be rubbish, and at first, you think, he is rubbish, but then you discover, actually, he isn’t, and you enjoy his show. But, and here’s the thing… you go through that process every time he’s on, you never start off thinking, Ooh Chris Moyles… great!! He always has to win you over- he never starts off being your cup of tea. I think its because he doesn’t shave.
It seems to me though, that it’s logical career progression for Chris Moyles to dip his toe into Radio 2 before making a big splash in it further down stream. That is the way of things. |

Now that is spooky.
I had been toying with a comment for this thread along the lines that his role after Radio 1 might be more theatrical (as well as television) rather than a straight hop to R2, even the distant prospect of which seems to send everyone into cold sweats.
What's under discussion with Radio 2 is a series about 1980s music, something about which Moyles is interested and knowledgeable. Despite the boorish nature of his day job I believe that he is intelligent and can speak eloquently, so, as an extra-curricular activity, it could be good.

Moyles' musical knowledge is actually very good indeed. He used to work on our "local" commercial radio station - once called Horizon, but now little more than an opt-out for that national radio disgrace called Heart - and he was a very good presenter who also championed unsigned bands. My good friend, the late Big George Webley (he who wrote and produced the theme to "Have I Got News For You" and who arranged the Handbags & Gladrags theme for "The Office", among many other things) told many a story about how he and Moyles would talk through the night about music. He was a good match for Big George, whose musical knowledge was encyclopaedic (he wrote and presented a very good BBC Schools series on music theory which was offbeat and excellent).
So...... yes, I'd welcome a radio 2 show from Mr. Moyles providing he's encouraged to adapt his style and be himself. |

I've never listened to Moyles (I gave up on most of R1 when I was still in my late 20s!) so can't comment other than if he's like Evans I'd rather he stayed where he is.

I'd say he was more like Terry Wogan, reincarnated for a much younger audience, than Chris Evans, H.
His Breakfast Show is full of waffle and japes, and lots of people under 25 used to love it, although there are signs that the formula is well past its sell-by date.
I had to smile. While flicking through the TV channels after the cricket stopped for lunch, I found Simon Mayo on Loose Women. He was there primarily to plug his series of Blockbuster, but Janet Street Porter mentioned Radio 2, the good listening figures, the comparison with his days at Radio 1, and "as a committed Christian, what did he think of Chris Moyles".
Mayo diplomatically sidestepped the loaded part of the question and replied that he was perfectly happy to have Moyles on the radio for his children as he took them to school in the car, but it's a talk show, rather than a music show - there always comes a point when you think, for goodness sake shut up and play some music. After he drops the kids off he retunes to "something more appropriate for a 50 year old bloke, Chris Evans"

Yes, I couldn't agree more. That's the problem - and it's not just oldies who feel that way; my son, who's in his twenties, and several of his friends, feel the same way.

I can listen to most Radio 2 shows and enjoy them... but I would never consider listening to Chris Moyles. I can't stand him!

True , butI don't think they have brought their styles with them as much as now, except Wrighty. They have come as they have 'matured' but the current selection have brought their same R1 shows and shouty styles as they did on Radio 1 eg Evans, Ball, Mayo and turned into an old R1. |

Tony Blackburn's style hasn't changed a bit. In fact, the only thing that's different is that Arnold is dead. Paul Gambaccini is the same, as is Bob Harris, Brian Matthew, Johnnie Walker........
Come to think of it, from what I can tell Chris Evans' style hasn't changed much either; he's still thoroughly irritating! |

I try to forget about Tony B , he's always been bad in my book be it R1 or R2, fortunately he hasn't got a daytime show (yet).
Gambo and Bob Harris I class as 'specialists' with their musical knowledge, not your regular DJs. |

Last time I heard he was in semi retirement but still making occasional appearances on Radio Berkshire

Surely the point is the old DJs from Radio 1, and the station itself, were very good... ( and usually welcome on Radio 2 ) unlike Radio 1 post 1990 when all were rubbish... thus, we will soon have Radio Bland/Shouty/ Miserable/Mundane/Heavy Accent 2....

I am surprised (very,actually) that you say that,Ron....I would have thought they were polar opposites although I stand to be corrected as I haven't listened to him for years so he might have changed ..he was the reason l left Radio 1 at breakfast time ...I remember him as having very childish,dubious humour. |
