I have had a beard for the last few years,i like it hence me keeping it but family and friends give me nothing but grief telling me to shave it off.Are there any other bearded wonders on the site who get the same problem?

I used to have the opposite problem. My late wife insisted that I kept my beard - probably because she had never known me without one and was scared what was underneath. I finally got rid of it when an employment agency insisted (honest) that I would be better without it.

Personally I've nothing against people sporting beards but I don't think a beard would be right for me

I once tried to grow one back in the early 70's but gave up after about ten days just because I found the whole thing so irritating - I mean literally irritating to the skin

Some say that people with beards are trying to hide something and are untrustworthy but I don't hold to that view

Given the choice between the beardless Tony Blair and the bearded late Robin Cook I know which of the two I would have trusted more Smile

Some beards are ok LP: there are only three types of basic beard.

1. The wild man of the north beard – unkempt and full of stuff – perhaps even the odd bird’s nest or small family of Ferrets living in it- as well the remnants of last nights pizza. Fantastic!

2. The designer beard – not really a beard – more of a fashion statement, occasionally used to emphasis sexuality of all persuasions.

3. The kind of beard that goes with sandals and socks. (The Vicar’s beard)

There are occasionally beard-combos: a mix of the above- the designer/sandal wearer beard is a popular combo; there’s even attempted beards, especially in the designer category- which usually look more slobbish and lazy than designer.

Beards add at least ten years of age to the appearance, so that thought (and sight of my brother now and then) has always been enough to put me off growing one.

But you can get used to someone with a beard, to the extent that they "don't look right" if they shave it off.

That conjures up some odd images to the mind, and, sure enough, you don't have to look very far on the net

LP. Perhaps there's a sandal wearer inside you bursting to get out! Smile You don't know until you try. Smile

Ron, that is exactly the sort of beard I would have, if I could have one. Smile
