This morning Alex has a thread running about turning into your mum. This I think happens to us all, I can see it coming in the mirror, I can feel it, every time I pass a charity shop, I want to go in but no! I'm fighting it- really quite hard. Although I had a close shave with the Rotary Club - who very nearly recruited me recently, I don't even know where the Town's womens guild is so there's some distance to go yet. I still jump the last three stairs on the way down and can still run up: and all my joints are made of their original construction material. Smile My mum's unpredictabilty is in my genes though- there's no escaping that.

An interesting thread , imagine if you really did turn into your mum- what then?

Oh no, the stuff my nightmares are made of!
However, it's quite easy. The mere thought of turning into a cross between Liz Windsor and Hyacinth Bucket is quite a deterrent.

Boys are supposed to take after their fathers, though, aren't they?
Well I have skillfully avoided freemasonry, chain-smoking and buying timeshares in places I'm unlikely to want to visit again, so there is hope yet.

You would think that, Ron but judging by the comments on the show- it seems not.

The thread on - how many tracks on a 7" 45RPM EP was interesting too- it's 4!!! Count em, one, two, three, four - like legs on a coffee table, 4!

Aw, you've just changed that, for the benefit of our younger viewers! Laughing

EPs were fab, even this one

and, more importantly, affordable when one had only half a crown pocket money a week and an LP costing 34/11d (let them work it out) was a distant goal.
The tracks were all interesting - sometimes hits, sometimes the best LP tracks, sometimes (as in the Beatles' Long Tall Sally) neither but just a good excuse to record some old favourites

PS - Sometimes you got five tracks

although whether the fifth one was fab or just a coffee table leg is debatable

After a little googling- some had as many as six but most, mainly 4, given that they were 7.5 minutes on each side, although if only three tracks, it was called a Maxi-single. We live and learn- doh! My mum says that!

Nerd alert!

Yes, six tracks was possible.
This Christmas present from my mum in 1962 was one

Mungo Jerry's In The Summertime was a maxi-single (possibly the first), with three tracks (Mighty Man and Dust Pneumonia Blues being the other two) which played at 33 and a third rpm

Tim Smith, covering this morning's BTOTD shoe, played a lot of my wife's favourites. Quite uncanny. Shame she wasn't awake Laughing

I missed it too. There's not much on today's playlist that I would choose to play myself- maybe the Monkees track but that would be it. Yesterday was whole different ballgame..... but then, yesterday, is not where we are today.

I listened to Tim for about an hr but then realised he was playing poor music and he seems to be turning into more of a smashy and nicey sort of presenter. Why does he always do the tv thing?I don't care "what i should'nt miss"...sorry in a bad mood today

As for my mum my sense of direction is just like hers,a nightmare.Have to keep tea bag in i'm the youngest by quite a distance out of 3 brothers so i was quite spoilt(in a nice way)

The man's off on holiday (again! Laughing ), and signed off with a stonking selection of music this morning (I know he doesn't pick 'em but...)

Maria McErlane sitting in next week.

Dr Strangeo is still in charge of the music, so should be good.

That's not a BBC radio studio though. It's either the presenter's home studio or the corner of a "normal" recording studio. That mic stand is a bit Heath Robinson under the circumstances. She does look rather freaky - a good face for radio, perhaps?

At least it keeps the tech ops in work as they need to stay and help Vanessa as she has finger trouble. Laughing

Ye Gods! Who thought this woman capable of fronting a radio show with music?

In the space of 90 seconds she name checked Enrique as Julio, then corrected herself because Julio 'is a woman'.
She introduced Michael Kiwanuka as Kiwanuku, described the single as having just been released (March), and that a new album is coming out soon (also March). But she does think the song is 'really nice'.

The website promises 'eclectic music' and 'inspired daftness' - nope just bland incompetence. IMHO of course.

Well if someone does voiceovers for shows like Eurotrash what in the name of sanity are they doing on a station like Radio Two

Bob Shennan is totally clueless - he really does need to develop some kind of grey matter Sad

She's there because Mr. Shennan has given her the opportunity. That surely answers the question.

He is indeed clueless....... and beyond redemption. That's why I think the station can, for the most part, be described as "crap".

She's probably just a little nervous. London is a big city- it's quite scary. More importantly- who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong?

Some fab music this morning.

She's worked with and been a friend of Graham Norton's for 20 years - I should think she's used to scary and having to think on her feet.

This is obviously new territory, though. Who picks the cover these days - the Beeb or the production company?

Music was OK. Pulp reminded me that we watched TOTP2 last night and a) couldn't remember half the tracks, those from the 90s, and b) wasn't Jarvis Cocker weedy then?

When I saw Jarvis with Pulp at the MEN Arena back in 1995 he looked exactly like that and seemed desperately in need of a good feed

One of the best gigs I saw though and I was pleasantly surprised as I only went along as I was badgered into it by my 13 year old step daughter - it was her first live gig Smile

The channel controller, in consultation with the programme's producer.

I've had a good listen on the iplayer- I can't find anything wrong with Maria McErlane- she sounds ok to me- quite cheery. Musical knowledge: I have it on good authority that as long as you know the first line to copacabana, nothing else matters.

I'm not sure that some presenters know the first line of their address let alone that to Copacabana!

But why do they allow themselves to have their limitations exposed? Do they not care? Are they unwilling or unable to do any homework on their subject? As a result they either blunder on regardless a la McErlane, or go all giddy and silly a la Ball.

At the end of the day it's just a job, but is there nothing that drives them to at least want to do it properly, let alone do it to the best of their ability? Have they no pride?

Competence is no longer a requirement - discuss.

I hear what you’re saying Tricky T but everyone makes mistakes now and again- even time-hardened consummate professionals make the odd howler – for some it’s part of their act! If you expect perfection all the time, you’ll never get it at any time. All of human life is out there: even in Radio.

Here is the show's tagline for today...."Maria McErlane sits in for Alex Lester, which means even more stupidity and top tunes."

What were you expecting? Does exactly what it says on the tin.

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl…..

I know, you’re all singing it…. Smile

As i mentioned on another thread about beards a certain Mr Cocker now adorns one and it suits him although he now looks like a dr instead. Also I'm not happy about Alex having this week off when I can't sleep....gonna write to the daily mail and complain Cool

Mr Cocker looks like a rather enthusiastic geography teacher with his beard. It does sort of suit him but it’s not the stuff of a rock star. He looks a lot like a very young John Cleese doing a funny sketch involving a tall gangly geography teacher with a beard but hey each to their own, if that’s the look he’s going for , he’s nailed it.

Alex being away is always a time of quiet reflection, during which we miss his witty charm and short hairy legs so badly, we ache to our very core for his triumphant return.

I caught a bit of Alex this morning- Jubilee carpet. Brilliant.

I was howling in the kitchen because we've (hubby and I) been having a long and interesting debate about carpet over the past few days- we're trying to choose carpets ( and tiles) you see, for rooms that we don't have yet. It's really hard. Well what colour are the kitchen units going to be? Dunno. What colour are we doing the walls etc- Dunno: so in chosing carpets one has to decide about everything else first- still: it's all a bit premature because as I type- we haven't yet chosen a builder! Although we should do that today.
