Gary Barlow releases a song and lays on a concert for her majesty - where we heard some music artists there non singing ability too sing a note, and given a badge. Here's a list of some of the worthy winners.

Just goes to show how shallow and fickle these awards have become these days

I don't decry what Gary Barlow has done in respect of the whole Jubilee thing but surely they should have waited a decent interval of time before coming up with something like this

In the old days people received such awards as a recognition of a lifetime of service to good causes in one area or another but now it's got to the point where some people seem to take the view that if someone is remotely involved in doing something like this they automatically have to get some kind of instant reward

I don't think my ex wife will be very happy because years ago before he found fame and was still living in Frodsham Cheshire a young Mr Barlow apparently did a dreadful job in installing her fitted kitchen Laughing

That's not quite true Rudds, in the good old days, Kighthoods and other honours were given out immediatly after, sometimes during battles for services in protecting the King or Queen at the time. These days, they are little more than a public thank you for a job well done. It's better to say thank you straight after the act if it's a one-off. It would be quite impolite to wait 50 years to say thank you for something.

I think it's a pretty good award, and well-timed. Barlow certainly seems to have worked hard on the events over the last few years (it will be interesting to see if David Arnold and Danny Boyle get a similar award for his Olympics work). And good for Gareth Malone too - I think both the Gareths have done much to raise the spirits of the country lately so the recognition is well-deserved.

And Sir Richard Stilgoe! Who'd have thought?

But the best exchange about the awards took place between Armando Iannucci and Alistair Campbell on Twitter today:

Alastair Campbell: So @AIannucci OBE joins the Establishment he claims to deride. Malcolm Tucker and I do not approve of honours system

Armando Iannucci: It's probably more Establishment to order your army to march into other countries for no reason. Swings and roundabouts.

Alastair Campbell: You see, your wit a bit tired and blunt already. Three little letters can have more impact than you realise. Tut tut

Armando Iannucci: WMD

Although I do agree about the position centuries ago I simply don't think that in our modern era people should be rewarded in this way for 'one off'
deeds - I think that in order to receive such an award recipients should have to have shown an element of dedication to public service over a decent period of time

On the current basis the whole honours system is effectively being devalued - rather like what has happened in our once great education system over the last few years with the likes of GCSEs

If the argument is that every one off good deed creates eligibility for such an honour then to take things to their logical conclusion we should be handing out honours to every Boy Scout or Girl Guide for what they do in 'bob a job' week or whatever its modern equivalent may be

Oops I just noticed in time that I'd accidentally put too many 'o's in 'bob'
now that really would have been an embarassing boob on my part Laughing

David Bowie is assumed to have turned down a royal gong years ago, and I can't say I blame him. The whole thing's a farce.

Rudds there's a huge difference between doing something huge directly for the Queen and mowing your neighbour's lawn during the summer holidays. The honours system is what it is: - those whom think that it has no meaning, shouldn't be too worried about it either way. If it's a meaningless farce, then why worry. Smile It's no biggy.

Oh don't worry Rach - I don't exactly lie awake in bed every night worrying about it - I've got far more important things to occupy my mind Smile

I just think its yet another example of how almost everything in this country which used to have meaning no longer does - but there again I don't think life in Britain has changed for the better over the last three or four decades in very many respects Sad

I'm a couple of years older than you I believe Ruddles, and most times ( unfortunately imo ) my mind is constantly thinking the same thing.. things were better back then etc.. but were they really?
Could be an idea for a thread maybe? Confused

It would be a great idea for a thread Santa but it might run the risk of reading like an episode of Grumpy Old Men

And I'm already feeling grumpy because that particular series has been consigned to the dustbin long before it should have been and I've watched the repeats at least twenty times over Smile
