This has been an out going news item over the last few days. It seems the stand-up comedian Jimmy Carr isn't the only celebrity trying to use an off shore trust to avoid paying what they earn in the UK. Carr is renowned to joke about people paying tax. It seems it's back fired. The good old saying ( people who live in glass houses)

_____________

Tax payers will be upset reading this if they spend their hard earn money.

Of course I don't agree with Jimmy Carr's behaviour and don't even really like him but it would help if our Prime Minister didn't take such an embarrasing stand on this subject when more than half his Cabinet have in place offshore arrangements in order to protect their millions

There needs to be a huge clampdown on tax revenue losses through devices both legal and illegal Sad

Cameron could have opened the flood gates now with his comments. Could it be as big as the MP's expenses?

A lot of people also go and see Carr cause of his style of humour. Most wouldn't give a toss about his Tax affairs.

Agreed. I thought Cameron's reaction was pathetic and misplaced. He's an idiot.

It might be easier to criticise tax avoidance if the Government wasted less of what it takes in.

Jimmy Carr .... "I've made terrible error over tax".....

In a series of messages on Twitter Mr Carr said: "I appreciate as a comedian, people will expect me to 'make light' of this situation, but I'm not going to in this statement"

"As this is obviously a serious matter. I met with a financial advisor and he said to me 'Do you want to pay less tax? It's totally legal'. I said 'Yes'."
"I now realise I've made a terrible error of judgement

"Although I've been advised the K2 Tax scheme is entirely legal, and has been fully disclosed to HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs).

"I'm no longer involved in it and will in future conduct my financial affairs much more responsibly. Apologies to everyone. Jimmy Carr."

A mighty quick turnaround...

Radio 4's "Money Box" presenter Paul Lewis posted an interesting tweet this morning:

@paullewismoney wrote:
"Tax evoidance: serious rule. If the scheme has only one purpose in real world which is to reduce tax then it is wrong and law should ban it. > so we should ban ISA's, there only purpose is to reduce tax?"

Yes, "there" should have been spelled "their" (Tut tut, Mr. Lewis).

I wonder how many of Cameron's cronies have been running for cover since the PM's silly comment yesterday?

My wife used to like him on the telly, and then she worked at Argos she went to an charity awards do at the Dorchester Hotel in London. Carr was the star turn that night. His whole act was filled with expletives beginning with "f" and "c" which went down like lead balloon with the audience. She can't stand him now!

I read on-line he paid cash for his his double-fronted three-storey eight-bedroom £8.5million home in London.... Shocked ...how true that is I have no idea.

I notice this evening that the PM is refusing to condemn the likes of Gary Barlow for engaging in similar financial behaviour

Oh but of course I almost forgot - he gets excused because of his wonderful services in the cause of the Jubilee - if Cameron really believes what he says perhaps he should think more carefully in future before he recommends some people for even today's much diluted honours Rolling Eyes

Davidson was on last night's "This Week". I think he made quite a good case, actually.

I notice that at no time has Cameron uttered any similar words of disapproval aimed at Saint Gary of Barlow, who also allegedly operates a K2 tax scheme. I wonder why? Perhaps he should have just kept his gob shut in the first place, the fool.

Strip Barlow of the OBE? Although he's not done anything wrong either.

Who said anything about stripping Barlow of the OBE - especially if, by your own admission, he's done nothing wrong?

Or you could give Jimmy Carr the same honour just to even things up - it gives a whole new meaning to the well known phrase 'honour amongst thieves' Laughing

Very funny edition of Eight Out Of Ten Cats last night ...his fellow comedians had a real go at him...

Sean Lock kicked things off by saying: 'We all like to put a bit of money away for a rainy day don't we? 'But I think you're more prepared than Noah.'
