The lush green courts of Wimbledon are a splendid sight to behold after the rather drab clay courts ....

It was a gutsy win last night from the very likeable Heather Watson, over Iveta Benesova, on her Centre Court debut..

Later today we see Andy Murray,Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha start their campaigns..Laura Robson has already started hers and is one set up.

Hi Becky. Laura played very well to catch up in the final set but was up against a strong experienced (tho noisy!) opponent in Schiavone.

BTW, in the local park I saw a dad giving his young daughter aged about 8 some practice on the courts. They were at the net and he was getting her to hit backhands. She was using a two-handed grip and missing nearly every one. IMO it would be better to train a young player in a conventional one-handed grip so that she could evolve later on to two hands if that suited her style. Mind you, I received my tennis coaching about 55 years ago Shocked so maybe I am out of date Smile.

I'd agree Eileen. They were talking about the lack of a single handed backhand during the commentary in Baltacha's game. It's almost all from the base line these days which I don't think improves the game. Just MHO!

Heather Watson is lovely to watch and what a charming voice she has. I'd not heard her speak before and it wasn't what I was expecting last night.

Hi Eileen

I didn't manage to catch all of Laura's match but credit to her opponent for coming through to win after being a set down.....

I agree with both you and Helen about not forcing a style of play on a youngster ..far better to let them do what comes naturally at first

It seems Nadal was still asleep when he came on court today....not for long though.... Andy seems wide awake.... Very Happy

Venus was diagnosed with an autoimmune illness (Sjögren's syndrome, which is an ongoing medical condition that affects energy levels and causes fatigue and joint pain ) last year so it's a bit surprising, to me, that she decided to compete at Wimbledon.

Good to see Andy coming through his first match in such a comfortable fashion.

I didn't know that about Venus, in that case as you say it's suprising she managed to compete at all.

Yes, that was a shocker! Shocked People keep saying this means Murray is in with a chance of getting to the final.
Probably worth remembering though that he's only in round 3 and has other matches to get out of the way before we can start thinking along these lines.

Two thrillers on consecutive evenings. So glad Federer won in the end. There seemed to be some controversy as to whether the Frenchman was receiving medical treatment or simply a massage.

Boris Becker said as far as he knew the massage was outside of the rules, didn't he?...and speaking of rules,I thought that after the first 6 points of a tie -break the players were't allowed to stop at their chairs for refreshments etc...I saw Sharapova doing it the other day and the umpire didn't say a thing....

I felt for Benneteau ..at thirty you can't help but feel he won't have many more golden chances, as he did last night, in the Grand Slam tournaments ...sad also to see Heather Watson so comprehensively beaten, but it's all experience,I guess.

Everything crossed for Andy....

Just for information there's a TOTP 2 special currently on BBC 2 with exclusively 60's tracks - really enjoying it - the tennis for me will just have to wait even though I do love it Smile

Playing under a closed roof has taken away the spirit what Wimbledon is all about!? It's an out door tournament!! They do have a point and does attract a lot and get the games played. I do think they should have extended the tournament? Blame it on the unpredictable British weather.

I thought it was a fairly disappointing match in terms of the quality of tennis

Murray's opponent to me almost seemed to give up near the end as presumably he just couldn't be bothered coming back on Monday

There have been some great matches at Wimbledon this year but I certainly wouldn't rank this one in that category Sad

I was gripped till the end. It was an entertaining match and I always enjoy watching Baghdatis. Well done to Andy for getting there at the eleventh hour (well, a bit after anyway Very Happy)

How handy to have the break while the roof was being closed so I had time to water the garden.

Be fair Colin, Cliff was called into the office and asked if he could please sing to entertain the crowd during what was going to be a very long and boring rain-break. He was great, considering that there was no accompaniment and that really he would rather not have had to do it - but he's a good guy and helped them out. It was good fun Very Happy.

PS I know what you mean though, Colin. He was singing better in those days compared with the Jubilee concert performance.

Agree with you both about Cliff!

The 'will they play it out' all added to the anticipation!

Of the little tennis that I've seen I have to say it's been very good this year. I won't mention the high quality of Murray's performance so far. It's bound to be bad luck......

Murray through is straight sets today, well done to him.

One thing that puts me off womens tennis is the shrieking, you get a bit in the mens game but it tends to be lower on the richter scale.

Yes, it's really annoying. A friend who was in the centre court audience last year said it's actually really loud when you're there, too. Sharapova is a primary culprit in that respect.

I do wonder what kind of grass seed they use as it does wear down after a few days? Anyway the grounds men have there work cut out to get it all ready for the Olympics.

I don't think it's the grass seed that's the problem, more likely due to a lot of hard wear in the space of a few days.
I didn't know they were using these courts for the Olympics.

I wouldn't have thought that they use seed at all - more likely very high quality lawn turf

There certainly wouldn't be time for grass to grow from seed between the end of Wimbledon and the start of the Olympics

Surely they're not just cheapskates filling in the worn areas with seed are they? Shocked

I heard them say it will run for 9 days Toggy, starting I think on the day after the opening ceremony.

Why can't they just spray it green? Nobody will know the difference.

The shrieking is really annoying. I was hoping Lisicki would win over Kerber today as Kerber is nearly as bad as Sharapova.

And yes, great to see Murray doing well.
