I general, I do like Alan Yentob's arts strand "Imagine..." and I wanted to enjoy this documentary. I always loved Paul Simon's "Graceland" album (it was the first CD I ever bought in 1986 and from a strictly musical point of view it's one of my favourites) but there was something about the style of the documentary that didn't connect with me. I guess it was because it still made me feel uneasy about the way Simon really did ignore the requests of the committed anti-Apartheid campaigners in South Africa. Like many who bought the album, I pushed such concerns aside and listened only to the music.
Was he right or was he wrong? I'm really not sure...........

| I've never been into Paul Simons solo music / albums, to me he seems to go places and 'borrows' styles. |

| I agree, although that could be true of a great deal of music in general. However, I was listening to Graceland in the car again last night and I do think it's a marvellous album. |

Funnily enough Graceland was the last vinyl LP I bought, in 1986, 'those new fangled CDs will never catch on'. I still have it but haven't played it for years.
Paul Simon was actually in breach of UN cultural sanctions by going to South Africa, but he did many black musicians a big favour by doing so and recording this.
I agree generally about his solo work, I never really liked it, certainly not so good as his 60's work with Art Garfunkel. |

The more music posts I read on this Forum the more I realise I took no notice whatsoever of the lyrics or what songs were about in general 
I had no idea the song was about Africa...
If there's another meaning to "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover", I probably don't want to know about it...
