Anyone else feel like leaving the planet for the duration?

My second cousin, Tom Daley, is taking part! The family will be having a party down in Plymouth if he manages to bag The Big One. After all the effort he's put in over the last few years (especially in the light of his Dad passing away last year) we really do wish him success.

I can't see myself watching much else though. Not really my bag, man.

I've no interest whatsoever in the Olympics even though I follow many sports very closely

As far as I'm concerned it's overrated, over-hyped and over here - I really wish it wasn't

Luckily though I know a very nice remotely located hotel which does not have television so I reckon I might go there for at least part of the time Smile

I should add one thing - the UK's largest outside broadcast television facility provider - SISLive, which is based at Kingston in Milton Keynes - has a massive contract to supply OB, links, satellite and content re-versioning services to the games. That's good for the many people who work for the organisation (and for those friends of mine who'll be working flat-out during the event) so it's not all bad. The beers are on them when they get paid - so roll on the games! Smile

(The same company deployed over 60 OB and links vehicles to broadcasters for coverage of the Royal Wedding, btw).

I'm actually fairly interested but will largely avoid the saturation coverage by going to the Edinburgh Fringe for a week or so!

I have absolutely no interest in the Olympics so I'll give it all a miss for sure.
I suppose the bit in the middle will be ok for the UK but the opening and closing ceremonies will be... what? interesting? boring, fabulous or plain embarrassing? I'll watch those but I'm not particularly looking forward to it. Confused

I'm happy to watch the sports BUT can do without all the hype, build up, commentators who will be going on and on, and half of them will know nothing about the sport I bet.

I just hope some of the 24 extra channels will be commentator free Very Happy

I'm quite interested in some of the sports (diving is always good to watch except that they all look perfect to me so just as well I'm not a judge!). I also rather like the sailing and rowing. No doubt other sports will grab me at some stage.

However I'm going on holiday to Norfolk for a week in the middle of it so some of the hype will pass me by.

I'm glad you singled out that one Eileen - as I mentioned in another thread Tom Daley is my second (or is it second-one-step-removed) cousin and both us and his whole extended family (who are extremely proud of his achievements) will certainly be watching his events!

It's seems to have turned into a celeb fest, or the TV has got bored with 'normal' folk ?.

Are the celebs sponsored to do it , or just promoting themselves ?

Anyone know which commentator is favourite for the Gold Medal in the freestyle language mangling event?

I've gone right off the Olympics since I read about the sposorship fascists. The participant are really irrelevant, this is about Coca Cola and McDonalds et al making all the fast bucks they can

There was an article in the Sunday Times about the olympics of old, where the winners would be given their medals and go back to work the next day. None of this goody bag corruption then.

That said, I wish every contestant the very best of luck

I don't personally want wall-to-wall Olympics but I guess there are many who do. The Beeb's level of cover is bound not to please everyone.

My alternative to the BBC wall to wall coverage arrived today - the complete box set of "When the Boat Comes In". I hope it will see me through.

Ian.

I doubt it will be any more wall-to-wall than Beijing was previously.

I'm staying. The BBC is paying me to do some Olympics-related work for them. That's why I'm in West Norfolk this minute. Woohoo!

Indeed there is such a place. In fact, the local authority is "Kings Lynn and West Norfolk District Council"!

Thank you Colin. I've only been in Norfolk once so I am rather ignorant of the geography and districts.

Reminds me where I live there's always confusion about naming things. The institution that I am a member of has a Midland Branch, covers the county of West Midlands (Brum, Wolves, Cov etc) but also Warwickshire, quite a large population to be represented, probably 5 million. So big that we needed to form four smaller branches, North, South, East, and West. So we were going to be the East Midland Branch.... no, no you can't be, there's already an East Midlands Branch which is Leics., Notts, Derbys...... so we had to become a District of the Midland Branch, the East District.

I think it's true to say though, "West Norfolk" and "East Norfolk" are not terms heard too often in general.. although I'm definitely in the east.. in fact another 100 yards and I'd be in the sea. At the same time, I'm in the very south of Norfolk... plus, my new place is in the very north of Suffolk which is also in the east.. Laughing
