Under Government plans speed limit along rural roads could be reduced to 40mph. Even though a lot have been reduced to 20mph area in built up areas and outside schools. This hopefully will reduce accidents and deaths on most quiet and narrow country roads.

A quite ridiculous proposal in my view

This country has the safest roads in the world already yet the dogooders never seem to give up their quest to stop everybody from doing anything which was quite normal for many years

Why don't they simply go the whole hog and propose that nobody should drive anywhere?

Some people need to keep a sense of proportion Evil or Very Mad

I quite agree. Why do drivers need to speed though these narrow country lanes? They think know one will be around, and time to see how fast the car can go. Yes - drivers need to think carefully...

Let's hope they use it sensibly and not every rural road is reduced to a snails pace for no justifiable reason Rolling Eyes

Why not? Why do people need to speed around country lanes and rural areas? It's about safety as cars are getting more powerful. I think a speed limiter should be added to the offenders cars once their ban has been lifted?

We have to get places ! It's not racing as long as the conditions are OK, 60mph is not fast on some 'rural' roads. If they reduce them all to 40mph it will be nightmare.

How are they going to define a rural road ? Rolling Eyes Most of the country is covered in 'rural' roads they aren't all the same.

They quote examples of going around a corner and hittting a pedestrian, is 40mph going to save them ?

The worst things on 'rural' roads are tractors etc when then they don't allow anyone to pass, and cars doing 20 or 30 mph Rolling Eyes

People should learn to drive better not give us all a blanket speed limit, that won't solve it.

As the mother and grandmother of horse riders I can only applaud any restriction on idiots treating our country lanes as race tracks. Most horse riders have no choice but to use roads even if they are making their way to designated bridle paths of which there are very few in this area. Some drivers seem to think it is great fun/very clever to get as close as possible to horses - my grand-daughter has had one such idiiot actually hit her stirrup with the wing mirror of their car. Sorry to rant on - but around here where there are quite a lot of horse riders plus children riding bikes and walkers any reduction in the speed of cars would be a blessing.
